~~ Arminius

Arminius was a chieftan of the Germanic Cherusci tribe under whose leadership some allied German tribes utterly destroyed three entire Roman Legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus and locked Rome out of the lands beyond the Rhine for some 400 years. The battle of Teutoburger Wald, the Roman Empire's Greatest ever defeat, ended on September 11, 0009 CE. The Republic of Rome was merely trying to share the benefits of civilization and the Republican form of government with the less civilized peoples to the North, who, for whatever reasons, rebelled at the idea and slaughtered the Roman assistance teams. Then again, the Republic of Rome was the government of the Roman Empire, which, like all imperialist nations, was interested primarily in exploiting the people and resources of the lands it conquered by force, so hat's off to Arminius.

On September 11, 1649, Oliver Cromwell and a bunch of thugs known as Roundheads captured the town of Drogheda, executed its garrison and slaughtered a lot of its civilians as well. This was a conflict between "supporters" of two differing tribes of Christians, one supporting somebody ruling by divine right (and force of arms) and the other supporting a divinely ordained and mandated "parliamentarian" government. Like crabs in a bucket, and neither side with any legitimacy, especially as to ruling the people they were fighting to control.

On September 11, 1697, Eugene of Savoy ambushed Mustafa II's numerically superior Turkish army crossing the Tisza river near Zenta (NW of Belgrade). The Hapsburgs, under Eugene, killed 30,000 of the invading Ottoman troops, including the Grand Vizier, dispersed the rest, including Sultan Mustafa II, captured the Ottoman royal treasury and the Seal of the Ottoman Empire. Eugene was free to raid into Ottoman Bosnia, which he did, and the Ottoman Empire was forced to cede Croatia, Hungary, Transylvania and Slavonia to Austria, This was a clash of empires over who would control Hungary, but it also had other effects such as Poland selling Kiev to Russia for 1.5 million florins, after having already lost what is now western Ukraine to Russia in a war.

On September 11, 1857 at least 120 members of the Baker-Fancher wagon train, including all of the children over 7 years old were murdered by members of the Mormon Nauvoo Legion in a premeditated massacre at Mounain Meadows in Utah.

On September 11, 1919, the US re-invaded Honduras. (We invaded Honduras in in 1903, 1907, 1911, 1912, 1919, 1924, and 1925 in order to maintain the US fruit companies' control over the country and its affairs, turning it into the original, archetypal Banana Republic)

On September 11, 1944, the RAF bombed Darmstadt. This was an "area bombing" using a combination of high explosives and incendiary bombs intended to create a self sustaining firestorm which would destroy everything. It worked, and the bombs plus the firestorm killed between 11,000 and 12,500 people.

On September 11, 1973, a US instigated and supported coup d'etat overthrew the elected government of Chile and started a reign of terror. Thousands were tortured and killed and thousands more were disappeared such that nobody will ever know the real toll. In addition, whitewash efforts began almost immediately and still continue, ensuring that untold numbers of survivors will never get closure. Until 2001, this was what 9/11 signified globally.

On September 11, 1982, the international forces assigned to protect Palestinian refugees after Israel's invasion of Lebanon left, facilitating the subsequent massacre of thousands of captive refugees in the Sabra and Shatila camps by Phalangists

On September 11, 2001, some Saudi ex-pats living in Germany killed 2,956 people by using airliners as missiles against the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. This, in turn gave a greenlight to US neocons to pass legislation like the patriot act and to start "The Great War on Terror", essentially an open-ended perpetual declaration of war against any target the US chooses, be it a nation state like Iraq or a wedding party or a couple of children of a vocal critic of US policies.

But hey! The century is young and there are still hordes of hatemongers and warmongers out there, so stay tuned ...

I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.

Got the first rain of the month last evening...about 0.5".

Well 9/11 has been an eventful war generating date it seems. Too bad humans are driven toward conflict and away from cooperation.

Thanks for all the music and the OT. Have a good day everyone!

amount of rain, sure could use it here, but we'll likely get plenty soon enough.

Cooperation involves sharing, which seems to be repugnant to some.

What a bloody mess this day has been. Maybe peace and tranquility might break out today. If it did, it would not be remembered or celebrated. Armistice Day isn't on the calendar anymore.
Take care, and I hope your health improves by the day.

@on the cusp

perhaps it is, a lot of the wars and killings were of a large scale, but if you pick nearly any day at random and get a sufficiently detailed chronology you'll find a great number of wars, assassinations, and other killings.

Thanks for the good wishes, I'm working on it.

It may be a (mentally) health improvement.
My big question all along this lone and distant hi way
is how the 'patriot act' came into being in such a short
time frame after the planes hitting the towers?

reminds me of my biking days ..

thanks for the OT on another Monday!

@QMS

"Reichstag Fire?". Sure as shit, the oligarchs and elites wasted no time in using it to ram through such a clawback of our rights a they could muster and invent new powers and authorities for themselves. Then they declared open-ended war on anybody and everybody to give them grounds to impose even further tyrranies. Those people, that class, are always looking for any opportunity to do so.

@enhydra lutris

any reason to diminish the former rights of a democratic nation is fair
game for the ruling class. Wasn't is bush junior that said the constitution
is just a piece of paper? When the rulers use that 'piece of paper' to wipe
their collect asses, it seems to lose its validity. Just saying.

@QMS process prior to 9/11. Interesting fact from an The Intercept article, April 27, 2021 1996: Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act

oe Biden was a key player in writing the precursor to the Patriot Act over the objections of civil liberties advocates.

Hadn't seen any documented evidence of it before, but it plays out that this was a
pre-planned venture. Like Covid is now. Building vaxx'es before the next release.
People with a modicum of reasoning can see it happening in real time.

Hi all, Hey EL! Hope all is well on the western resistance front.

Zeiss was the man. There went a glass grindin' genius. One of their high-end binocs is in the top 3 or 4 types chosen by the best of the best birders. Was top 3 for a long time. I have a 1955 Telemegor 400mm lens from Germany, they were the cat's meow, Zeiss glass.

Thanks for all the great history! Not mention the OT and great music.

This might be the last regular 45 I ever bought, besides a couple picture disks.

binos and couldn't find any I really liked that much. A large sporting goods store was going out of business so I dropped in, they had one pair of Zeiss left in the store, 8x40 B T* p*, used for demo. I looked thru them and I think I uttered an audible wow and, of course, bought them. Many years later my wife was going thru the same process and just didn't want to spend that much bread so she was trying huge numbers of the next tier down when I told her that since she knew she wouldn't buy them anyway, to just look thru a pair of 10 X 42 at a store out in the next county. She did and just couldn't put them down and definitely couldn't go back to any of those other ones. Definitely fine glass.
