Government Graft and Giant Grifts

Open Thread Image.jpg

Ask yourself why both parties voted against appointing an auditor to track Ukraine weapons and monies. Greed is the operative descriptor. The US government doesn't care about its citizens. Consider the hundreds of billions going to Ukraine and the total lack of support for the people of Maui. No, we have a government by and for the multinational corporations, oligarchs, and globalists. Is there a way out of this conundrum? I don't see it. I hope you can offer some possible solutions in the comments below.

Masking for COVID? Should I wear a mask? Cochrane reviews are considered one of the best in evidence-based medicine. The medical community considers them the gold standard in medicine due to their methodology, thoroughness, and transparency. Bottom line, wear mask if it makes you feel better, but in reality it won't help. However, washing hands was an effective deterrent reducing infection by 11%.

Twitter Files Writer Shellenberger Reports Government Agencies Behind NGOs’ Demand for More Censorship by X/Twitter

Independent journalist and Twitter Files contributor Michael Shellenberger reports that nongovernmental agencies (NGOs) leading the recent advertiser boycott of X/Twitter have a history of receiving money from and spying for governments. The groups include the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). There is concern surrounding the ADL’s advertiser boycott that it is an effort by governments to regain the ability to censor users on X/Twitter that was lost when Elon Musk took over last November. The previously mentioned groups lack good evidence to prove that online hate speech directly correlates to “hate-motivated violence,” or that censorship prevents it. The ADL, in its goal to stop “the defamation of the Jewish people,” has justified unrelated censorial advocacy work using the legacy of antisemitism and the Holocaust. Their attempt to speak for all Jewish people may be inadvertently fueling antisemitism.

Was a bit stymied by the two terms, so found this..

Graft: noun - : the acquisition of gain (such as money) in dishonest or questionable ways
also : illegal or unfair gain

Grift: verb - : to obtain (money or property) illicitly (as in a confidence game)

One of the problems in differentiation between grifter and grafter is that there appears to be a certain fluidity of meaning in early use, particularly with grafter. The grifter is a small-time confidence man, a carnival swindler, or thief of some sort or other. The grafter may be most of these things, but also may be someone who engages in the “political corruption” sense of the word graft (which we define as “the acquisition of money, position, or other profit by dishonest or questionable means, as by actual theft or by taking advantage of a public office or a position of trust or employment to obtain fees, perquisites, profits on contracts, or pay for work not done or service not performed”).

It seems they are very similar in meaning. Referring to both crooked politicians and shady
business types? Anyway, it is mostly a sport in our exceptional nation.

Thanks for the watch!

@Socialprogressive rules the DNC is considering for this cycle's primaries -- some sound bad-enough plausible rigging for this DNC, some seem like a gross overreach towards blatant rigging that even convicted election thieves would blush at -- won't be finalized until Sept 14, in 4 days.

RFK in this clip says he will wait until things are finalized before "considering other options", i.e. presumably launch a 3d party bid. (Unlike Cornel, Kennedy is in the race to win, not make a point or "be a moment in a movement".)

And why wouldn't he if the DNC is going to make it virtually impossible to challenge the anointed one.

@Lookout emphasized in a couple of interviews is that his donors expect him to be a serious candidate, not a show horse, so he would have difficulty taking their money if the party has rigged it so that he can't possibly win.

Agree. It will be interesting to see if the DNC goes all-out cheating or something less. RFK said he doesn't expect 100% fairness or perfection, but rather a basically honest system. To deny him delegates because he has committed the sin of campaigning in IA and NH would be grossly unfair, as would the latest idea that he be given no delegates in GA if he campaigns in either of the traditional first 2 states.

Wait until Thursday.

@wokkamile -- that the DNC will do what it pleases, as it is (to quote the lawyer discussed by Sabrina Salvati) a "private association." It can do what it wants. It can run all sorts of primaries and caucuses in all sorts of places and then tell the voters "none of your electioneering means anything because we have decided." In Kennedy's situation, what its recent move means is that the DNC has declared that it will make up rules until his candidacy becomes of no consequence.

Kennedy's donors are doubtless wondering WTF he's doing dealing with the DNC. Either he needs to cut the cord ASAP and run as an independent, or endorse Biden or West or someone else and go back into the shadows. There is no third option.

@Cassiodorus He at least deserves a few more days to get the DNC's final word on Thursday before making a major decision.

But if he is compelled to go 3d party, the DNC will be looking at a much greater risk to Biden's reelection prospects than if he'd been allowed to compete fairly against Joe.

And no, he won't be endorsing Biden. He's already clearly on record saying he won't be endorsing anyone calling for more war in Ukraine, which is a central part of Biden's record so far., and def no endorsement of Joe after the way he's been treated by the Biden admin and DNC. Nor West or Marianne Williamson for that matter. He doesn't strike me as the sort of Kennedy who throws in the towel when things get tough.

Prof. Fukushima at Press Conference. (No.1)

"This is not drug harm. To be clear, the vaccine is not a drug, but a bioweapon with all kinds of toxicity. So many people have died because of distribution of the bioweapon. It's a massacre. It's a Holocaust."

Prof. Fukushima’s statement:

I am the President of the Study Group on Vaccine Problems (The official Name of the Study Group is Japanese Society for Vaccine-related Complication (JSVRC)).

As a doctor and as a scientist, I am gravely aware that we are facing a tremendous crisis right now. I could say that this crisis has just begun. This is a crisis of democracy. The people's right to access information is completely undermined. The government adopts a shameless attitude to keep totally disregarding the basic human rights such as the right to pursue happiness, and the right to live that are protected under the Japanese Constitution.

This is absolutely unacceptable!

Honest scholars have been documented numerous cases of vaccine-related harms and injuries etc., at their academic conferences.

The number of reported vaccine harms is 'many hundreds’.

This is not just an unusual situation.
Nothing like this has ever happened before.

What vaccines are causing are not drug-related harms.
Totally incomplete substance called a nucleic acid medicine, which is in fact not even a medicine, was distributed to the public.

So what happened as a result?

I dare say, "Murder."
We could say that a massacre has occurred.
This is more like a holocaust caused by a bioweapon.

Something very sloppy and half baked has been released into the world.

Trillions of public money was wasted on such a half-baked product.

We will address the post-vaccination syndrome which is classified as ’Adverse drug reaction’ according to the international classification.

It is high time to deliver appropriate medical care to patients affected by post-vaccination syndrome
in a truly serious manner.

Immediately, all doctors, all scientists, need to face this huge problem.

The pharma companies didn’t actually try to create a true vaccine, but they created counter measures on the request of the military. Counter measures for the military are weapons.
The Dom tweet is a much watch because lots of people think that it is what is happening. Biden of course hasn’t been in charge of anything except for choosing the flavor of his ice cream.

Russia has some of the dirt on the Ukrainian ones, and perhaps someday all that will come out.
Nuland admitted to Cruz that there were indeed Biolabs in Ukraine.

Russia also presented evidence in the UN.
Russia presents "bioweapons labs documents" at UN Security Council, US denies
Russia renewed allegations that the U.S. is funding bioweapons labs in Ukraine at the United Nations Security Council on Friday, claiming it has evidence of such facilities.

Further, Russia accused the U.S. of running a biological weapons program about which it was keeping Ukraine in the dark.

It also claimed on Friday that Ukrainian nationalists had used chemical agents to “carry out a provocation” in some regions of the country, in order to accuse Russia of carrying out the attacks.

The U.S. ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the U.S. would not “dignify Russia’s disinformation or conspiracy theories” and said Moscow has “repeatedly lied” to the Security Council in recent weeks.

“We’re not buying what they’re selling, literally or figuratively,” she said, adding that Ukraine does not have biological weapons laboratories: “not near Russia’s border, not anywhere.”

that masks do not work. The chances of getting infected if you wear one is the same as if you don’t. The link to the study might be in my Fauci comment on how CNN showed that he’s just a clown making things up.

If you can slip a hair anywhere on your face between the mask and your skin then that’s where the virus can get in. Also if you are wearing a tight fitting mask and your glasses steam up that’s not a good sign.

Another study has shown masks to be very toxic and the toxins can get deep into your lungs causing many problems including cancer. I just read that a few days ago and I will try to find it and post it.

Here is one article on toxic masks.

Thank you for what appears to be a very juicy WW. I will dip into it later in the day. We are fixing a feast for Breakfast/Lunch today so I have to dash off and do my bit.

I did skim your post though and noticed your section on masking. I do respectfully disagree with your position completely so let me just make a few quick statements. You say that the Cochrane study is a good one; well it has been discredited. Here is a link from February of a post by Lambert Strether from Naked Capitalism that analyses the study. I find it well argued and convincing. https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/02/new-buzzy-cochrane-study-sets-th...

Among some of the points he makes:
1. Conly’s Cochrane Study Fails as Scientific Communication

2. Conly’s Cochrane Study Fails as Science

3. Conly’s Cochrane Study Fails as Epidemiology

4. Conly’s Cochrane Study is of Dubious Provenance.

And from the New England Journal of Medicine, “Evidence for Health Decision Making — Beyond Randomized, Controlled Trials“:

Elevating RCTs at the expense of other potentially highly valuable sources of data is counterproductive. A better approach is to clarify the health outcome being sought and determine whether existing data are available that can be rigorously and objectively evaluated, independently of or in comparison with data from RCTs, or whether new studies (RCT or otherwise) are needed.

Thanks again for the OT Lookout, I plan to stop back later.

You might want to hear the clip.
What does the Cochrane report say?

Cochrane is a non-for-profit international network, which includes researchers, health professionals, patients and carers from all over the world.

The report, published in January 2023, included trials which compared medical/surgical masks versus no masks in the prevention of the spread of viral respiratory illness.

The results from those trials indicated that “wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of influenza‐like illness”.

However, the report’s conclusion urged caution and said there was “a high risk of bias in the trials, variation in outcome measurement, and relatively low adherence with the interventions during the studies hampers drawing firm conclusions”.

Karla Soares-Weiser, editor-in-chief of the Cochrane Library, responded to reports saying that “masks don’t work” as an “inaccurate and misleading interpretation”. However, “there is just no evidence that they [masks] make any difference”.

Bottom line, if you feel masking is effective, wear them, but don't mandate them...especially for children.

Thanks for coming by, and expressing an alternate view.

Hope y'all have a great brunch!

Step 1: The Armed Forces of Ukraine attacks some obscure village in the grayzone.

Step 2: Battle ensues, and the Russians retreat after having slaughtered abut 80% of the Ukrainian forces.

Step 3: Collective West mass media puppets declare victory.

Step 4: The Russians re-occupy the obscure village.

Step 5: The whole process is granted the blessings of the collective West by being called "aid to Ukraine."

Rinse and repeat. Here's a RBN piece illustrating the HISTORY in which the "NATO Left" was created. We were all supposed to pretend that America is this great democracy in which people debate opposing opinions. A few ridiculous polls later, and the "Left" in America spontaneously disappears, replaced by millionaire journalist fan clubs for so-called "Leftists." "We love Bernie and AOC with every 50,000 Ukrainian casualties produced by the foreign policy they promote!"

So there it is, folks -- the real aim of the Blinken - Nuland - Sullivan syndicate. To get a whole swath of Americans who might otherwise demand a better world to self-destruct, and all they have to do is keep up the lie through the November 2024 election and they'll have another four years to make Russia and China into the world's most prosperous countries. They aren't doing this intentionally, of course, but intentions matter little when you've managed to get all meaningful dissenting voices to self-silence. Of course they won't be able to do it.

I'll be surprised.

Your Ukraine war synopsis rings true. However, one important idea to my mind is that the Russians strategically withdraw, wait for Ukraine to move in and then inflict massive casualties allowing them to move back into the area. This is indeed a war of attrition.

the Cochrane trial included

trials which compared medical/surgical masks versus no masks in the prevention of the spread of viral respiratory illness".

The glaring problem with that is that medical/surgical masks are to prevent droplet spread not airborne spread. That discredits the study from the get-go. Covid is primarily spread airborne. That requires at the very least an N95 mask. You will not prevent spread of Covid using a surgical mask.

Covid requires BSL-3 precautions for containment. People who work with these types of diseases and viruses know this. Surgical masks are not used for prevention of airborne particles because they are not designed to work for that purpose, they are designed to prevent droplet spread. Covid is a virus that primarily enters our body through the respiratory tract but it is an airborne particle not a droplet. You need an N95 for prevention. They used surgical masks in their study? That's crazy.

On top of that, the author states there was low adherence to mask wearing during the study. How can you say you studied the effectiveness of masks if people didn't wear the masks during the study?
Here is where the author of the study says that

relatively low adherence with the interventions during the studies hampers drawing firm conclusions”.

It sure does hamper the drawing of firm conclusions! In fact it makes it the very definition of a flawed study.

@randtntx of 78 RCTs most of which (except for 8) were done pre-Covid and for a variety of respiratory viruses. The authors' conclusion is that the evidence for mask effectiveness in preventing or reducing the rate of infection and transmission is inconclusive, which they note is different from saying that masks don't work.

@wokkamile @wokkamile , that is exactly what has been discredited. Did you read the analysis that I posted above? It doesn't seem like you did.
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/02/new-buzzy-cochrane-study-sets-th...

Here is one of the authors of the study stating that the study is inconclusive (therefore does not prove that masks do not work);

The review authors are clear on the limitations in the abstract: 'The high risk of bias in the trials, variation in outcome measurement, and relatively low adherence with the interventions during the studies hampers drawing firm conclusions.' Adherence in this context refers to the number of people who actually wore the provided masks when encouraged to do so as part of the intervention. For example, in the most heavily-weighted trial of interventions to promote community mask wearing, 42.3% of people in the intervention arm wore masks compared to 13.3% of those in the control arm.

So here you have a study that claims to prove masks don't work, yet a large percentage of the people didn't even wear the masks! What kind of study is that?

up
4 users have voted.

@randtntx randtntx, I am reading this stuff the way you are. RCT's are considered the gold standard, but mask efficacy is dependent on HOW WELL they are worn. Poor fitting masks worn intermittently are obviously not going to be very helpful. But well fitted, well worn 95's will be helpful.
I have a friend who is an almost retired (was but then wasn't) research Doc at the VA. Has connections and relationship with Osterholm here in MN. Pretty bright guy. Bit IMHO missed the boat on C19. Early on he showed me the Cochrane study on Iv. In his view it proved Iv didn't work. But for those who remember that study it showed that in 7 of 13 studies it did work. But averaged out it was only a 20% (or so, going by memory) benefit, so the conclusion was statistically insignificant. But I argued, if the Wright brothers got their plane in the air 7 out of 13 times they would know they were onto something. They wouldn't say, "well that is nothing". They would say, pack your bags we are going back out next weekend to try again.
Anyhow, fast forward to the Cochrane study that shows that "masks don't work". Now, same friend says Cochrane messed this up. I happen to agree. I think they messed both up. Common sense tells us that if something works 7 out of 13 times then there is a signal and something to work with. And common sense tells us that a respiratory disease which is spread thru the air can be at least partially mitigated by making sure we always have fresh clean air to breathe. Results will vary based on how well you mask. I think Lambert and NC have done quite a masterful job of sleuthing out that this was airborne rather than droplet. And that air quality is key. CR boxes and well worn masks. IMHO they have missed the boat on vaccine injury, over focusing on long C19. And missed the boat on just how effective Iv is. But if I wanted to loose money real quick I would bet against NC. And if I wanted to be safe and smart I would bet with them.

up
3 users have voted.

@wouldsman , I didn't remember that that was a Cochrane study that did Ivermectin in. That's sort of ironic.

I agree with you when you say

but mask efficacy is dependent on HOW WELL they are worn. Poor fitting masks worn intermittently are obviously not going to be very helpful. But well fitted, well worn 95's will be helpful.

I also agree with you point by point about the excellent job Lambert and NC did on certain aspects of this public health crisis while not being so strong on other aspects.

up
2 users have voted.

@randtntx your analysis, no hadn't seen the NC piece.

Did the study ever claim specifically that "masks don't work" as you assert it did? Or was that conclusion drawn by social media/bloggers? I only saw that they said the results were inconclusive as I noted above. I didn't catch where they overstated their case.

Also, question -- how would a valid study be conducted that could accurately track if test subjects are consistently wearing the given masks?

up
3 users have voted.

@wokkamile @wokkamile , Tom Jefferson, interviewed in the Times by Bret Stephens said:

There is just no evidence that [masks] make any difference. Full stop. My job, our job as a review team, was to look at the evidence, we have done that.

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/02/new-buzzy-cochrane-study-sets-th...

I do know that there is a very clear statement in the beginning of the report that says the study is inconclusive.

It would be accurate to say that the review examined whether interventions to promote mask wearing help to slow the spread of respiratory viruses, and that the results were inconclusive. Given the limitations in the primary evidence, the review is not able to address the question of whether mask-wearing itself reduces people's risk of contracting or spreading respiratory viruses.

https://www.cochrane.org/news/statement-physical-interventions-interrupt...

And yes, this truly is the tricky bit;

how would a valid study be conducted that could accurately track if test subjects are consistently wearing the given masks?

In this case, a large RCT is probably not the best choice.

up
2 users have voted.

@randtntx As I have my morning coffee, I think about mask efficacy tests.
How do the tests define "wearing"? When at work? When at school? When outside your dwelling? When sleeping? Eating? Taking a shower? Who is in that dwelling? Are they masked?
In other words, there is simply no way to test their efficacy one way or another.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

@on the cusp . The study you linked showed how it was done. The problem is compliance, consistency, knowledge, and a myriad of other factor which I am sure all of us could compile a list of.

As others have pointed out, this is an engineering problem. We can make good masks. They do it for people who work in Tuberculosis clinics. They do it for people who work in BSL-3 labs. It is not hard to do, we are smart enough. You could not hire people to work with tuberculosis patients if you did not have good PPE. It is done all the time. Why do people throw up their hands and behave as if we can not solve this problem. We know how to reduce these risks. Why don't we just do it? Why do we have to make a political argument about what is simply a public health measure?

@randtntx tb is a bacteria, not a virus. That is what they were designed to give protection from spread.
I haven't seen any data that any mask that could block aerosol viruses unless they were so solid, you couldn't inhale.
I agree 90% is way better than none, but it only takes one of those damn virus particles to get a person infected.
If this whole problem is viewed from military prospective, the virus was meant to spread, with no way possible to stop it. It is a bioweapon. The military was successful.

@on the cusp @on the cusp . There is the concept of viral load. If you have an area with a dense concentration of circulating virus (lets say a small room or and airplane) where air circulation is very bad, then your chances of inhaling the virus are higher. You are correct that there is a percentage of risk no matter what, but my aim is to decrease my chances of risk, and that can be done. It is not an impossible problem.

Both covid and TB are BSL-3 level pathogens and both require PPE with a minimum of N95 masks.

@on the cusp @on the cusp , you cited. It shows that masks do work.

When a mannequin exposed to the virus was equipped with various masks (cotton mask, surgical mask, or N95 mask), the uptake of the virus droplets/aerosols was reduced. A cotton mask led to an approximately 20% to 40% reduction in virus uptake compared to no mask (Fig. 2B). The N95 mask had the highest protective efficacy (approximately 80% to 90% reduction) of the various masks examined; however, infectious virus penetration was measurable even when the N95 mask was completely fitted to the face with adhesive tape (Fig. 2B). In contrast, when a mask was attached to the mannequin that released virus, cotton and surgical masks blocked more than 50% of the virus transmission, whereas the N95 mask showed considerable protective efficacy

Our airborne simulation experiments showed that cotton masks, surgical masks, and N95 masks had a protective effect with respect to the transmission of infective droplets/aerosols and that the protective efficiency was higher when masks were worn by the virus spreader. Considerable viral loads have been detected in the nasal and throat swabs of asymptomatic and minimally symptomatic patients, as well as those of symptomatic patients, which suggests transmission potential (4). Accordingly, it is desirable for individuals to wear masks in public spaces.

I will gladly take a 90% reduction of viral load by wearing a mask as opposed to breathing in a full virus load. They do say masks aren't 100% effective. but 90% reduction of risk is not bad.

Maybe if the jabs stopped when omicron came out things might have been different because the virus mutated into something less severe. I have no idea if this is true, but something that crossed my mind while reading this. If you read it let me know if you see the same thing.

2 bottom lines. No gain of function no outbreak. No jabs and people eventually develop herd immunity and those who got the initial virus they should have gotten early treatment with repurposed drugs that lots of doctors found worked very early in the pandemic. Didn’t McCollough speak to the Texas legislature about ivermectin months before the jabs got authorized? He should have been praised for his work. Instead he was belittled and ostracized.

This is from Geert not Campbell. Geert was saying that from the beginning. Dr. John came to it 2 years later.
