Friday Night Photos Funky Foto Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 12/09/2022 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
Earlier in the week I was going through my photo archives looking for a photo I took about 10 years ago. Sadly I was unable to find it but in the process I came across a bunch of photos that I played around with in photoshop or other photo manipulation software and thought they would make a nice change of pace from the usual birds, bugs, beast, and flowers I normally post.

Hi Social
I enjoyed your playful photography. I especially liked the round mandala of tiger eyes.
I played with my flashlight again in the second photo.
Cheers everyone and be well.
Good evening Janis, wonderful stuff. I can't
describe what it is about the texture and dimensionality, but it is really great.

Hi el
You might recognise the subject from your garden produce.
Hi, janis
Very nice shots. Your flashlight and flowers play nice together.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.

You make me laugh. Thanks Social.
great pics Janis!

Thank you dystopian
I enjoy your light too.
It is a Leek flower with its sheath hanging on.
I like the butterfly one
Did you add the frame to part of the picture? It looks 3-D until you see the legs are on the flower. Way cool.
Here’s a few more from the island.
That’s a big rock that was surrounded by water last year and you can see how much further the water has receded.
I really like how this came out.

Nice shots from the island, Snoopy
although I have to ask, with all that water gone is it still an island?
Sam looks like she really wants to go play with the buffalo.
The butterfly and raccoon are a style known as out of bounds where you frame what you want in bounds and mask what you want out of bounds and add a background.

Cool
Did you use photoshop to alter it? Wish we lived closer so I could watch your talents in photo manipulation. What you did with the shots of Sam were amazing because I knew that you were shooting into the sun with a black image. I have a brand new iMac that has been sitting in its box that I got so I could get back into using photoshop…
In the link I posted you can see how far the lake has receded and I mentioned that they are putting up fences to keep the animals from walking off the island. It used to be a joke that if the lake got any lower…and here we are.
Poorly worded. I posted a picture of the lake that shows how it’s changed.

The out of bounds shots were done in photoshop
For the shots of Sam I used Nikons editing software, which is what I use for most of my photo editing. I'm pretty sure all camera manufactures have editing software that you can download from their website and you can find tutorials on how to use them on youtube

neat pics SD!
As for the Osprey thing, I would have to check notes and don't know if I would have recorded it, but would say I have seen them release fish, or let go, or have the fish get away, before. I don't know that I have ever heard the 'they can't let go' thing about them.

Gorgeous photos snoopy
They really convey a sense of place. Thank you for posting them for us to enjoy.
Tell Sam she has a fan club at the other end of the earth ; ).
Thanks
I posted a few others in this link that shows how we were all alone out there. And one of Sam with her favorite camping baby.
Have you recovered from your ickness? You are moving into summer now right?

~Hannah Arendt
Yes, I am recovered from the flu, thankfully.
Don't ever want another one.
Thank you for the additional photos. Both the buffalo and Sam look very content.
It's a transitional time before it truly feels like summer. Still a bit rainy and lacking in sunshine.
Glad to hear
The real flu is quite nasty. I got one back in the 90's that kicked my ass and I was down for over a week or two. I’d go back to work and be back in bed for days again for weeks. But I had to suddenly stop smoking and I wonder if the withdrawal just felt like the flu. I think I got the H1N1 in the late 20 oughts and again sick as a dawg. But the 1st one was much worse.
Sam says to tell you hey… she really wanted to go out and play with the Buffalo. I let her play with their tracks on the beach instead.

Hi snoopy
It definitely kicked me in the ass. Good riddance!
Please give Sam a treat from me.
Good evening Social - wonderful pics and effects.
Being of a certain age I love the red, red, rod against that "car show" background. All the others are great too, especially that "breaking the frame" effect.

Hi, EL
In the original shot of the coupe, the car was swallowed up by the similar colors of the cars in the background so I used selective coloring to make it stand out.

Good evening Snoops. NIce pics and scenery.
That is an interesting vid by Mark Smith, but his interpretation is questionable. I'm not 100% sure about Osprey (I bet Dysto is), but I am about Eagles. Their feet lock, and they cannot let go of or drop prey when airborne or in deep water. When they land on solid ground or a branch or nest, the lock releases and they can let go of the prey. Every year eagles drown, especially in Alaska, grabbing fish too heavy to lift in water too deep to touch bottom and too far from shore to struggle to land. That Osprey looked to be in the shallows so once it gave it trying to lift, it could've touched bottom and released the lock, assuming that it is the same as with eagles.

I doubt there are any species that perform 100% consistently,
including the mighty Osprey. We are all flawed and sometimes make fatal mistakes.
This is not so much behavioral as physiological. However, it,
naturally, heh, isn't absolute - see my correction to my original post above.

Hi el
I wish I had the physiological strength and endurance of an Osprey ; ).
long time, no see. It is really very uplifting
to see you all back and look at the amazing pictures.
Here I disagree, janis: "I doubt there are any species that perform 100% consistently

I am never flawed but make fatal mistakes all the time.
I am glad to hear you have the worst of the flu stuff behind you. Be well and stay strong. All the best to you and all. I wanna come back... to the good old USofA.

It's a pleasure to see you here. I miss your special humour and perspective.

I hope you're getting closer to reaching your dreams.
@mimi Hi mimi! Take it from
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
I know nothing about them or eagles
I just love looking at his stuff which is usually of osprey. I’ve never seen one and just can’t imagine how big they are. Heh…maybe I’ll plan a trip to Florida. If gas ever comes down again.

CORRECTION: OK, I was in error, but it's tricky.
1) Eagles and some other raptors have a locking mechanism involving their tendons and the tendon's sheaths. It acts like a ratchet so that they grip on prey and perch is automatic and they don't need to think about it. To let go of something they have to fully extend their leg and then consciously open their talons. When lifting anything they unconsciously pull it up toward the body, so, unless they land and stand, they have to first relax their lifting muscles and lifting reflex, and then relax their feet.
2) Osprey. I don't know if Osprey have the above issue or not, but they have another type of problem. Their toes have a special gripping surface that we may thing of inward or upward. Their talons are incurving. If they grip their prey tight enough, they can sink the talon so deep that the up and in action of the toes grip surface keeps them from extracting the incurving talon.
sorry about that

It sounds quite hazardous for the Osprey
if they attach too deeply and then run into trouble.
Yes, but I have no data on how frequently
this occurs. Eagles parasitize Osprey by harrassing them into dropping their fish and then stealing same. This appears to happen frequently enough that the "stuck foot" issue above can't be too overly common.

OK, i,v got a few today, from Cabo and
Mazatlan.
Our favorite eatery in Cabo is right on an esplanade where one can watch the birds and seals on the fishing boats while eating fish tacos and drinking beer:
Dont know what this is, not too good of a picture, either
Don't know exactly what this is either, it's related to Mesquite, but the seed pods are between 14 and 18 inches long
Further south, an unknown plant in Mazatlan
Nice slogan on a restaurant wall
A Cool company name and Logo above doorway
Another mystery plant
This is some cool, imho, church architecture. It is identified on a plaque as an Iglesia Sinodal, meaning it is a synodal church, whatever that means, but it is full of icons and such on the inside

Thank you for the variety of photos el
The light and colour is dazzling, especially the seed pods against the perfectly clear blue sky.
I recognise the cluster of orange flowers but don't remember their name. The white flowers with yellow centre are definitely Plumeria/Frangipani. I hope you smelled them.
Thanks Janis. Actually neither of us smelled them,
stupidly enough. Next time maybe.

Legume for sure, but I don't think Acacia;
also none of the mesquites, though highly similar leaves to both. 2 other candidates are Royal Poinciana and Guaje -
The Leucaena are legumes of the mimosid ilk.

Plant with the seed pods looks related to Leucaena leucocephala,
which is a pest / invasive species, now considered naturalized, in Hawai‘i.

Can't beat fish tacos and beer. So, who's the captain and who's the first mate.
I believe your second mystery plant is a Plumeria.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP! Hope it's all good out there!
Great pixels SP! I really like the zz eliminator style chop top hot rod. Great way to fix that busy background! Tried to ID the fish in the egrets bill but too small for me to see well enough. Up the socal coast in Orange and LA Co.'s, Funk 49 was revered at the time.
Fun stuff! Thanks for the images!

Thank you for the interesting collection. My eyes are rolling, in an entertaining way, by the Obama fresh kill, and 'god is dead' additions.
Tigers
Really enjoyed the photos posted here! We have ospreys in local area from time to time, and on occasion get to see one.
I realized the primal nature of the fascination with big cats a long time ago. I made a new acquaintance yesterday when the subject of the Florida panther came up as we both discussed accidental encounters with big cats in the wild areas outside the local urban sprawl. I had the good fortune to see a large adult panther two times in the wild by chance from the safety of my car.
In Korea tigers used to roam the mountains, reportedly until some time in the 20th Century. Koreans claim during the Japanese imperial administration, deforestation of the peninsula and unrestricted hunting by colonial officials resulted in their elimination.
Tigers played an important traditional role in fables and childhood upbringing. If children didn't mind their parents wishes, or wandered too far off, they were told the tiger might carry them away. Years ago I was fascinated with the cultural focus on tigers. They had many qualities in art, whimsical, fantastic, dangerous, and strong. It's bad karma I guess to have too many images of tigers in one's home, but I collected some anyway. Images of a tiger apparently have some shamanistic property. A lot of young US soldiers I saw in South Korea, had the ubiquitous ferocious tiger embroidered on black jackets. I actually wasn't too found of this aggressive image, but what the hell, maybe it keeps the bad spirits away, I don't know.
Below are three differing styles, the traditional folk painting (min hwa) of a tiger with an animist, whimsical style; a "realistic" style painting from the 18th Century by Kim Hong-do, a famous court painter (a copy by my wife's aunt) ; and a modern realistic rendition of the tiger coming down the mountain on white celadon:
The band Lee Nal-chi does a performance of Tiger comes down with the Ambiguous Dance Company in a Modern folk fusion performance. I haven't taken time to do the translation yet, but I'm gathering that it comes from the myth of a sea turtle that called a rabbit down the mountain, for a deceptive purpose. He erroneously called the rabbit "Ho" (tiger) instead of "Do" (rabbit). As a result the sleek, powerful, tiger came down the mountain inspiring mortal fear in the sea turtle.

Hi, soryang
I love all animals and the felines, be they large or small, are at the top of the list.
Around where I live Bobcats are spotted every couple of months or so, although I've never seen one.
Thanks for all the information about tigers in Korean history and culture and for the art. I like the tiger coming down the mountain in the last image. Even though I don't speak or read Korean, I enjoyed the video.

I found a translation
I thought too that the sounds and the dance movements gave an ominous frightening impression of the tiger's presence without the need for a translation. Ho rang i is the Korean word for Tiger derived from the Chinese character 虎 ho. The native Korean word is used in the song, 범 beom. Beom ne ri on da. Tiger comes down, sounds like a chant.
The traditional singing style is called pansori and is usually accompanied by drums and gayageum, a Korean zither. It takes years of training to become a proficient pansori artist. I like Leenalchi's modern presentation. The group has performed in the US recently.
The dance group too is a modern version of the traditional village entertainment troupe. I once encountered such a group in the South Korean countryside that was celebrating some event in a farming village I had been sent to visit, (to warn of some upcoming military exercise that was going to disrupt their community, especially their farmland). Their performance was delightful, astounding, fascinating. I had never seen anything like it. These troupes normally use cymbals and drums as they dance around. Their clothing is dramatic and colorful.

Hi soryang
Thank you for the Tiger art, history and mythology. The prints are too beautiful to be bad of spirit.
I also enjoyed the music you posted, especially how animated the sound and performers are. In some way I was reminded of David Byrne and Talking Heads. I guess because it was quite quirky, and mysterious to my unfamiliar experience.

Hi soryang
Those characteristics must be what makes the music and performance so engaging.
I hope it won't be too long before you're in your renewed urban/suburban home and enjoying it.
Sp, your photos look just like paintings,
some in a semi-surrealistic way. Simply awesome!!! And "Funk #49" is my very favorite Joe Walsh tune--period!! This diary is improving every week, and I love it!! Rec'd and how!!!!!!!

Thank you, orlbucfan.
The improvement can be attributed to you and all the others that contribute every Friday night.
