I don't know where to put this...Life maybe?!

I've had a profound epiphany in the last couple of days; maybe more than one, honestly. I have been reading a parenting book, which I probably should have done long ago, but alas here we are. I did this because the covid pandemic has caused a tremendous strain on me (and I think my family too). Things have been pretty miserable at my house for quite some time and I had to try to make things better for my family. I have been struggling with my new normal while trying to force my kids to believe that everything will GO BACK TO NORMAL!!! without even really believing that myself.

I have realized that often what triggers problems is my own (real) reaction to things my kids do, that attach to my own parental relationship. Like sometimes I take my own animosity to my mother out on them Sad when in reality, it has nothing to do with them.

Is this what midlife is like? Trying to understand where you have done wrong and do better? or is that just life in general?

Anyway, also, I recently purchased tickets to see Dave Chappelle in person. I don't know if any of you are fans, but I know he has put out some controversial stuff lately. I said to my husband "It's like people have forgotten that it's a joke. It's supposed to make you think. When people can think about things from a place of humor, it makes it LESS scary and easier to accept. We shouldn't be censoring people, especially comedians. They play an important role in moving controversial ideas forward." Anyway, it's my epiphany of the week. Could that be a regular thing?

I love Dave Chapelle. He is hilarious and a thinker. Comedians have so often been at the forefront of social commentary. Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, George Carlin, Dick Gregory, etc., in fairly modern times. There is a great long line of great comedians that made people think. Where are the Mark Russell's today?

Epiphanies are great, the more you have them the better usually. I'm doing good to get one every couple months now. The whole world needs one real bad right about now. In particular the western leadership.

We all get to set off with a toolbox, mine the screwdrivers all had handles at both ends... Experiments in chemistry for mind and body, and early therapy, were critical for me.

Good luck!

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

@Crazytimes This is not the original source I'd heard it from, but despite trying to insist it's "wildly imaginative" (like that's a demerit somehow), it explains the situation well enough: https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/pfizer-alopecia-dru...

It would be entirely consistent with the hive-prodding-for-profit MO that's become the norm over the past decade.

that more people need a Dave Chapelle epiphany. Comedians of his talent have great capacity to enlighten.

Enjoy the show, and just don’t sit in the front row if you are not prepared to laugh at yourself ; ).

Actually, it is pretty cool that you are having this realization already at midlife.

Yes, this is the journey . . . doing better . . . loving better . . . listening better . . . understanding better . . . being more grateful . . . etc.

Enjoy Dave! Life's lessons are everywhere, aren't they?

sometimes. I’m lucky to live in Denver, because his favorite club is ComedyWorks- so every time he travels through town, he does some no-notice shows here. I’ve seen him 5 or 6 times now.

I say “sometimes”, because he can be really moody as a performer- and when he’s pissed off, the shows can be really unpleasant. All I can say is “Do NOT heckle him!”. That is a bad idea at all times and with all comedians, of course, but especially with him. He got heckled in Connecticut badly enough to walk off the stage mid show a few years ago, and the next show he did when he decided to come back out again was here- and we attended it. There were signs posted every 18” around the place saying “No heckling! No talking! No cellphones!” So everyone sat in silence, which was bad news since he does about 50% crowd work. But the crowd was too scared to interact, especially after he had several people bodily dragged out for looking at their cellphones. We almost left part way through.

And sure enough, the next week all the ComedyWorks clubs had Yondr bags, where they now seal up your cellphones during the shows so that they can’t be used. We just leave ours in the car now…

When he’s good, he’s awesome. You’ll know in the first 5 minutes. Let us know how it goes!

@usefewersyllables

just announced a short notice show at the downtown Comedy Works this weekend. $150 a head, so we’re going to give it a miss. How was the show?
