Laboring to Entertain?

Open Thread Image.jpg

Let's break from the news cycle this holiday weekend and watch some old movies and a few fun shorts and cartoons. It's pick and choose what interests you. Only the most serious movie buff will have seen all of the films, and the shorts will be new for almost everyone. Have great holiday and enjoy a movie or two over the week. You might want to start your viewing with a cartoon or short.

th-4184594908_0.jpg

Let's start with a vintage cartoon...
Walt Disney's The Old Mill (1937)

Here's some general foreground of this film. During this time, Walt was very busy making Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, in order to create special effects in Snow White in the way Walt envisioned them, the animators had to run tests. They had to see if these effects were even possible and they wanted to see the audiences reactions.
Walt wanted Snow White to be as lifelike as possible so the audience would observe the movie as a live action film rather then a cartoon. Unfortunately, animation is in 2D so Walt and his staff came up with a solution called "The Multiplane Camera" which gave animation a 3D effect. Different uses of lightning, color, and realism in animals was experimented in this film.
Walt won an Oscar for this film and totally deserved it.

I'll pair that with a 1937 Hitchcock film Young and Innocent aka The Girl Was Young (1937)

"Young and Innocent", released in the US as "The Girl Was Young" is a 1937 British crime thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the 1936 novel "A Shilling for Candles" by Josephine Tey.
Storyline:
An actress is murdered by her estranged husband, who is jealous of all of her young boyfriends. The next day, writer Robert Tisdall (who happens to be one such boyfriend) discovers her body on the beach. He runs to call the police, however, two witnesses think that he is the escaping murderer. Robert is arrested, but owing to a mix-up at the courthouse, he escapes and goes on the run with a Police Constable's daughter Erica, determined to prove his innocence.
Main Cast:
Nova Pilbeam, Derrick De Marney, Percy Marmont, Edward Rigby, Mary Clare
Hitchcock's cameo:
Alfred Hitchcock's cameo is a signature occurrence in most of his films. He can be seen outside the courthouse, holding a camera, at 14 minutes into the film.

One more cartoon from Disney. Disney Fantasia, Mother nature to music of Hans Zimmer

From the blip below the clip... I only recently watched this movie for the first time and realised what a great piece of art it is especially this scene..so I re edited it to the great music of Hans Zimmer.

How about another Hitchcock from 1936? Sabotage - Alfred Hitchcock (1936)

A ring of saboteurs is causing havoc in London with a series of explosive terrorist attacks. Karl Verloc (Oscar Homolka) is part of the group, but he maintains a cover as a kind movie theater owner. His wife (Sylvia Sidney) is beginning to suspect something, though, and so is Scotland Yard Detective Sgt. Ted Spencer (John Loder). What neither of them know, however, is that Verloc uses his wife's little brother (Desmond Tester) to deliver the bombs in film canisters.

Immediately, a large-scale man-hunt is launched, and the city is tightly covered by the constabulary, whose chief is intent on capturing Johnny and the other members of the gang. Kathleen sets out in search of Johnny

The Trial | Full Classic Action Movie in HD | Anthony Perkins | Orson Welles

The "Kafkaïenne" sense of this production can be seen in this French film created in English, principally shot in Yugoslavia with many dozens of native extras, based on the writings in German of a native Czech author...

Mirage (1965) Gregory Peck, Diane Baker - Mystery, Thriller
You'll have to watch this one from YT.

Peck is an amnesiac in New York who traces his past back into the middle of a murder plot. Although the two leading players, Peck and Diane Baker, are shown up by their supporting cast, this remains one of the better thrillers of the '60s (adapted from a novel by Howard Fast). The harsh b & w photography, the various levels of reality, and the use of urban landscape, all contribute to the feeling of unease, building up an atmosphere that is perhaps better than the mechanics of the plot.

And to round out to an even dozen films, another four star film,
M (1931) English Version, Fritz Lang, Peter Lorre, Ellen Widmann

Peter Lorre stars as serial killer Hans Beckert in Fritz Lang's harrowing masterwork M, a suspenseful panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller. Another great Hitchcock movie, The 39 Steps.
A man in London tries to help a counterespionage agent. But when the agent is killed and the man stands accused, he must go on the run to both save himself and also stop a spy ring which is trying to steal top secret information.
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Writers: John Buchan (adapted from the novel by), Charles Bennett (adaptation)
Stars: Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim
The 39 Steps is a 1935 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Very loosely based on the 1915 adventure novel The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan, the film is about an everyman civilian in London, Richard Hannay, who becomes caught up in preventing an organization of spies called the 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets. After being mistakenly accused of the murder of a counter-espionage agent, Hannay goes on the run to Scotland with an attractive woman in the hopes of stopping the spy ring and clearing his name.
Filmmaker and actor Orson Welles referred to the film as a "masterpiece". Screenwriter Robert Towne remarked, "It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that all contemporary escapist entertainment begins with The 39 Steps.

I guess that should be enough choices for everyone to find at least one film which interests them. Of course this is an open thread and all topics are welcome in the comments. I've heard a few commentaries about the "dark Brandon" speech that were interesting. So share what's on your mind from movie tips to the news. Have a great holiday.

A refreshing change of venue today.
Have never been a big film buff
(am a reader) but your selection is enticing.
'escapist entertainment' -- what a concept.
Could describe current media to a T.

Entertaining folks today with a chicken/shrimp/sausage gumbo which was made yesterday.
Aside from the biscuits and rice, adding the shrimp and file, it is heat and eat today.
Tastes better after commingling.

A quote derived from an interesting novel The Anomaly by Herve Le Tellier ..

"There is something admirable that always surpasses knowledge, intelligence, and even genius, and that is incomprehension"

The novel is a contemporary mystery dealing the with issue of simulated reality based around
an Air France passenger plane on its' flight from Paris to JFK.

Enjoy your day and thanks for the OT!

@QMS

I've not made any in quite a while. I've got a pot of chili we're working on that I made the other day.

Most of the movies featured today, we watched this summer. Many of our favorites aren't on YT. We rarely go to a theater to see recent releases mainly because there are not many new films we want to see. A friend that does frequent the movie theaters recommended "Three Thousand Years of Longing" but we have to drive an hour to get to a movie theater.

Thanks for the visit. Enjoy your company and have a great day. It rained all night and is just now calming down. Almost 4" collected so far. Hate to see the road, no doubt I'll have to re-grade. Something to labor with on labor day!

Edit to add: just poured out the gauge which was 6" not 4". Still raining too.

Nice selection of movies and short films. Watching them will give me something to do while I'm hunkered down inside hiding from the heat. Today will be another 100+ degree day. With the continuing drought here in the west any rain would be most welcome. It will take half the winter before we get 4 total inches of rain.
Enjoy your holiday weekend

Here's a short that appeals to my slightly twisted and offbeat sense of humor.

I saw the US weather map this AM with the large high pressure bubble sitting on the west. The report was like 122F in death valley and 100+ in Salt Lake City.

I hope you find one or more movies entertaining and worth the time! Thanks for coming by and dropping the clip!

Thanks for the selections that can help round out my weekend of enjoyment. Celebrating Labor Day weekend with a “labor of love” cooking in the kitchen making nice meals. Visited the Community Garden so have a nice bunch of broccolini to create something wonderful but the gumbo QMS mentioned does sound delicious! Sure some grilled chicken will show up in one of my meals.

Also enjoying the weather we are experiencing here in Santa Fe at the present. Did a Scavenger Hunt with Santa Fe Conservation Trust where we were given a list of things to look for while on a 2.5 mile hike in the hills outside Santa Fe. There were several children with us and it is always fun to see their excitement at finding the prettiest rock with colors, tree with a hole etc. Will do at least one nice bike ride to enjoy all the fields of sunflowers we have happening all over town.

Hope all can have some enjoyment this weekend.

a movie or two. I should be able to cast these to the living room TV for a better effect.

I had Fantasia, which I saw as a really young child, reinvigorated for me in High School when a bunch of us went to see it in a local theater. That experience put me on the lookout for it later on as it goes so well with dope, and eventually bought a copy on videotape when it came out in that form. To this day, certain pieces of music can conjure up certain image sequences from that film.

@enhydra lutris I should have known... I wondered if anyone was gonna mention that... I can only speak for some circles in the Huntington Bch. area of the Org. Co. long before it was 'the OC', when it was actually still pretty cool, into the mid-70's... One of the old-time theaters I think in Santa Ana would have Friday and Saturday midnight showings of Fantasia, and played it twice in a row. I have no idea how many times I saw it, shall we say chemically enhanced Berkeley style... But the place was always packed with my kind of people. Definitely a crowd favorite. And with that Voice of the Theater sound system... awesome. Thanks for the memories! Wink

That the new president there placed high priority on completely eliminating private ownership of guns tells me to beware an authoritarian agenda, no matter how dressed up with woke niceness, butterflies and unicorns...

Disarming the peasants (and generally downgrading or eliminating individual rights) is always a priority for tyrants of whatever persuasion.

Jojo Rabbit is a movie by Taika Waititi. In an interview with some of the cast (below), one of the actors said this movie is about a boy discovering other stuff.
That description is lacking, but it is true.
I can't describe the movie because I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I can say though that I think that Waititi is unbelievably talented.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taika_Waititi

I'm only familiar with 3 of his movies;
Jojo Rabbit
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Boy

Many of you all have seen these already. I wonder if they struck you as being as incredible as they struck me. Initially I found with each movie there was a certain goofiness that, to me, was off-putting .
But after a few minutes, it was apparent that each was extraordinary.

As with the movies, the interview below might be off-putting, but stick with it, it's short (7 minutes) and it describes Jojo Rabbit better than I can.

Thanks for the OT and the recommendations, Lookout. Hope the rain eases up over there for you. We finally got some last week .... 2.5 inches and then some more yesterday...another 2.5 inches.

Hi all, Hey LO! Hope all are well! You are a rain magnet there it seems LO. At some precipitation conjunction. Some here say our town name must be an ancient word for 'rain kryptonite'.

But finally... In the me too dept. we got rain here as well last week, 5.5+", and 7.5" for August, wettest month in a couple or few years. I think drought stage moved from D4 to D3 before the 5" event, so next week we will show D2 is my guess. I saw what was definitely water movement in the river channel though. Lake Amistad out by Del Rio came up TEN FEET! The Rio Grande needs it badly, Falcon Res., downriver was at 10% of capacity before the last couple weeks whence the rains came. Feast or famine does seem the new normal. In Texas though hurricanes have long been called the 'great drought busters'. Some flowers are blooming and its not a hundred degrees. Yard is greenest its been all year. Might have to mow it yet.

Migrant birds are moving now. Daily we have Orchard Orioles and Yellow Warblers going through, a few Dickcissel and Least Flycatcher here and there, last few days some Baltimore Orioles. The nesting Black-chinned Hummingbird are all gone and have been replaced by migrant Ruby-throated now. September is one of the bigger months for fall migration. The country's migratory breeders are on their way out of the states for warmer climes and bugs in winter.

Enjoy the ride!
