i wasn't aware of that either, but i suppose that russia doesn't have a lot of incentive to get right on investing time and money into a pipeline that germany says that it intends to stop using soon. why would anybody sink a lot of money into infrastructure that has such a limited lifetime, with the expectation that there will be obstacles to operating it thrown in the way by other western countries?

heh, it's sort of ironic that when i was a kid a lot of the disgusting ethnic jokes about various europeans revolved around their (lack of) personal hygiene and their alleged odors.

China spends a fortune on other countries
...making improvements and supplying necessities for becoming economically sustainable and energy secure. When China makes a loan and it doesn't get paid back, which happened throughout Africa during the pandemic, they write the loan off. And then they spend more money. Their projects always get completed and the country they help can see the benefits.
China is using a slightly different economic model, however — one that the US could adopt with little fuss. The Chinese government does not privatize the country's resources (or the innovations or patents or expertise) that have emerged from the Chinese People working together, over time. Instead of privatizing these national treasures, and handing ownership to "favorite"crony corporations to exploit, the Chinese Government will operate the business itself, for a certain period of time. (China's National Oil Company is a good example, which is also the largest employer in China. China's national railroad is another example.)
The Chinese government will then use the profits from these companies to make large-scale improvements to the nation and modernize its infrastructure. China can also invest the revenues to help other countries with their own development — all while paying good wages to the employees and keeping the costs of oil and transportation low for the Chinese people. In this way, the Chinese Government does not have to lay a heavy tax burden on the people in order to fund large scale national projects for the betterment of all. By contrast, in the US, the favored corporations not only keep the privatized profits for themselves, but they rarely pay taxes on those profits Thus, the American people get steadily poorer while the nation's increased wealth is hoarded at the top.
This economic system is the reason the US wants to go to war with China — and destroy its economy and wipe out its progress.

but if it is it's probably worse. Anyway, supposedly if you add up all the taxes we pay hidden in every little place Americans pay as much in taxes as Europeans. OTOH they get health care and a college education and we get potholes and billionaires and heavily armed Nazis.

We've discussed a few times the excess deaths around the world. Sure is terrible to see these fit young folks dying as part of those deaths. Will the MSM ever address this issue? I doubt it.

heh, i have to admit it's been pleasant to have a break from the news for a few days now, though i'll get itchy to get back to reading it soon i'm sure. tomorrow when i am spending some quality time with the folks at the motor vehicle administration i'm sure that it will cross my mind that i'd rather be reading the news than standing in line.

My first thought
was to consider Steyn unreliable because he and his guest seem to be engaging in a vendetta while the "Scottish NHS figures" are unconfirmed, but then I remembered the violently defensive reaction Australia and New Zealand have and/or are using in response to the same observations. The only unconfirmed part is the temporal correlation.
And remember, the rest of the world is reporting 16% excess deaths, the US is reporting 40% (though our figures refer to a specific age range)

sadly, no. i tried to find some roadside bbq along the way, but every time i saw one either it was closed or it was pouring down rain. so, mostly i had bad american road food. i am making up for that now, though. the southern cuisine has come north to meet me and it often lives in my kitchen.
