Friday Night Photos Dog Day Afternoon Edition

Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.

The nations birthday is on Monday so fix up your favorite food and beverage and party like it's 1999.

I shot these yesterday afternoon while I was at the the San Diego county fair. There were four dogs in the show, all rescue dogs ranging in age from 1-4 years. They were all very happy dogs and had tons of energy. The first five shots are the dog catching two frisbees in the same run.

Thanks for the fun photos and video. There was a guy who used to post here who is a master at training dogs to do these feats.

Not much but light rain and fog ...

Notice the pink blossoms on the Puriri, my favourite tree. This very old tree produces flowers and seeds throughout most of the year, and attracts and feeds my favourite bird, as well as others. It can live up to 2000 years. My guess is that this one is middle-aged and flourishing lavishly.

I'm off for the day and will check back late this evening. Enjoy all.

@janis b
In California we have the Giant Sequoias that can live up to 3000 years. That seems so long yet it's only a blink of an eye on the galactic time scale.
The gentleman that trained the frisbee dogs was K9disc. I haven't seen him post here in a while. I hope he's doing well.

@Socialprogressive Hey SP, check out the Bristlecone Pines. White Mountains of eastern California have them. For a long time it was considered the oldest living thing. I think about 5000 years old. Methuselah I think is the oldest known one, have seen it a bunch of times, You can drive to the short trail to it at 9000' or so.
Used to spend time high, high in the Whites when I lived in Big Pine.

Now the Creosote rings and Aspen groves since being determined to be one giant organism, are considered older, I think some in the 5-10K years range from when they started. Also an evergreen of somesort in N. Europe grows like Aspen, all connected below ground, and are more ancient. But for sheer impact, a Sequoia or Redwood are hard to beat. Those old Bristlecones growing where hardly any water other than their weathering which is spectacular, look their years.

have fun!

White Mtn to check out the bristlecones myself, but the thing with Aspens raises a whole nother issue for me. Acoast redwood, sequoia sempervirens can grow from seed, from live burl or as a sucker. Years ago they felled one up north, Mendo iirc, for some project or another requiring that they stump it, and after a few days work they discovered that it was a sucker, growing out of the side of the trunk of some much more ancient fallen giant. Who knows how many generations of suckers might underlie some of those trees, maybe, like turtles, redwoods all the way down.

@janis b Looks wonderful Janis! Is that a cave hiding up there in back? Would then that be the Tui tree?

The Puriri is the favourite tree of the Tui, my favourite bird. The relationship of these two somehow reminds me of this song.

I believe what you are seeing as a cave are the dark, dense tops of the Manuka or Kanuka tree.

but I detest the high jumps. They're hard on the dogs joints unless done over water or very loose sand. Add to the fact that Aussie sheps have a high incidence of joint issues and you have failure of care imho.

Great stuff, SP, janis b, and educational stuff by Dystopian.
But Snoopy, my client looked inordinately tired, so I hope that is simply her taking a brief nap before she was given her anticipated (and deserved) dog bones.

Your client’s every need is always taken care of. She’s lying on the couch with a pillow for her head isn’t she? And she says that she gets as many bones as she wants daily. I know that if her needs aren’t met she has you on speed dial…sheesh.

Those Aussie Shepherds are beautifully marked. I do agree with the comment about the excessive jumping being somewhat cruel. Had Dobes for years and they could jump; however the 2 Booger Beagles I have now (yeah, downsized) make the Dobes look like old farts. Smile
