Will Visiting Extraterrestrials Be Friends or Foes?

UFOs aka: UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) have been in the news a lot lately.  Documented on-the-ground (or near-the-ground) presences would certainly change everything, beginning with the utter certainly that we are not alone, and that other beings’ technological knowledge vastly outpace any nation on earth’s. That epiphany in itself would likely cause mass panic and fear...for most people.

Would their ships have the capabilities to bend space to shorten travel time; would they use propulsion fuels unknown to us?  Would they have cloaking technology and transporters such as the USS Enterprise did on Star Trek Next Generation as well a replicator technology that mooted the need for greed?

But the question most important to me is: Will they be weaponized marauders like The Borg, or those in the film Independence Day, or scientific explorers and benevolent and enlightened philanthropists willing to share some of what Planet Earth agrees it might require?

Depending on which locales/nations they might choose to visit, will the rest of the planet know?
Have you ever had a suspected sighting, or know anyone who has?  Have you ever sat on a cliff and silently supplicated: ‘Come and Get Me; I want to travel the galaxies’?

Given the new ODNI report, the US would see any visitations as a national security issue’.  Shoot first and sort it out later?

(A bit of background:)

It seems that 60 minutes had done due diligence due to the reports leaked by the military leaked  to this bloke Jeremy Corbell; his oeuvre on youtube, some with his friend Bob Lazar/

Don’t hold me to this, but viewers seem to  have been told to watch for the coming report from the Senate Intel (an oxymoron) Committee, and it wasn’t hard to find (smile.)

From the Office of the DNI: UNCLASSIFIED UNCLASSIFIEDOFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE; Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’, June 25, 2021  (a few bit of commentary elsewhere):

‘The US community's long-awaited report examined 144 reports of what the government terms "unidentified aerial phenomenon" (UAP) — only one of which investigators were able to explain by the end of the study.  From the Office of the DNI, this nine-page pdf.

One website had offered:

“Very inconclusive, Investigators found no evidence that the sightings represented either extraterrestrial life or a major technological advancement by a foreign adversary like Russia or China, but acknowledge that is a possible explanation. "We were able to identify one reported UAP with high confidence. In that case, we identified the object as a large, deflating balloon. The others remain unexplained," the report says. A senior US official said that of the 144 reports, they "have no clear indications that there is any non-terrestrial explanation for them — but we will go wherever the data takes us."

Bottom line: The report concludes "unidentified aerial phenomena" could "pose a challenge to US national security"

From the Report itself:

‘But Some Potential Patterns Do Emerge. Although there was wide variability in the reports and the dataset is currently too limited to allow for detailed trend or pattern analysis, there was some clustering of UAP observations regarding shape, size, and, particularly, propulsion. UAP sightings also tended to cluster around U.S. training and testing grounds, but we assess that this may result from a collection bias as a result of focused attention, greater numbers of latest-generation sensors operating in those areas, unit expectations, and guidance to report anomalies.  And a Handful of UAP Appear to Demonstrate Advanced Technology In 18 incidents, described in 21 reports, observers reported unusual UAP movement patterns or flight characteristics.

Some UAP appeared to remain stationary in winds aloft, move against the wind, maneuver abruptly, or move at considerable speed, without discernable means of propulsion. In a small number of cases, military aircraft systems processed radio frequency (RF) energy associated with UAP sightings. The UAPTF holds a small amount of data that appear to show UAP demonstrating acceleration or a degree of signature management. Additional rigorous analysis are necessary by multiple teams or groups of technical experts to determine the nature and validity of these data. We are conducting further analysis to determine if breakthrough technologies were demonstrated.’

If we look at human history the record of contacts between cultures whose technological prowess was very much different has not been good. I doubt if I need to review this history. For that reason, I think that we should consider the validity of the Golden Rule as a recipe for species survival in difficult times.

If a civilization has the scientific know-how to cross the vastness of space they likely would have the means to do whatever they wanted to do with us. But they have (as far as we know) not made us into dinner or interfered with our day to day lives, or anything of that kind. Yet!

As far as we know. Maybe they have been here a long time, perhaps living somewhere out of our sight, even thousands of years ago.

Perhaps way beneath the oceans or wherever. Years ago I helped put a database of physical traces of UFO sightings online for a UFO group (as a paying gig) and there were a lot of them. And they were fairly consistent. So I believe that something did happen. But I had no idea what was happening. And I am pretty technically literate. I have a few friends who are what you might call space buffs, (I kind of am one too) I think we should keep trying to push the boundaries of science, and also keep space free of weapons and wars.

I would really like to see more cooperation in space between different countries. The cooperation between the US and Russia (on the ISS) has been very positive as far as I know. We represent the "corporations explore space" model now, kind of. The US has always relied on corporations to build space vehicles and even crew some spacecraft (as subcontractors)

Lets just keep on going into space and being the best people to one another and the best scientists we can be. I think we'll do okay if we do that.

No, I don' think we will colonize Mars, because its very cold and dry, and the air, although not a vacuum, is far too thin for us. Its very inhospitable to human life without (more) water and oxygen. Mars it seems had far more water in the past, a very long time ago. (A time when Earth was probably quite inhospitable to our kind of life too.) Other planets may have evolved life that chemically is far different than us. Or maybe not. We don't know.

This is what I mean. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothetical_types_of_biochemistry

Whatever life we encounter, we should treat it as if we would want ourselves to be treated. A self disciple we've been unable to manage up until now. Instead, the history of inter-species contacts have been filled with situations that left a lot to be desired in terms of behavior.

In economics, what would they be called, "market failures?"

there is talk of "terraforming" Mars, of changing the atmosphere to make it livable for us. Such a drastic change would, of course, kill everything that might possibly be alive there now. It doesn't have to be Mars, specifically. I mean any other orb, planet or moon. We blithely talk about planetary murder without thinking, because it would be useful to us.

So it's likely that "aliens" would come here and find there's too much oxygen without considering what it would do to life on the planet.

@Shahryar .

Our global culture draws from many sources, some far more equal than others. The Book of Genesis is one of the biggies. From Chapter 1, translated into modern English:

.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

.

The key word is subdue.

That divinely inspired quest to subdue nature is the force behind the fight against the pandemic. Civilization has been one long adventure in keeping the natural world of predators and parasites at bay. Nature fights back century after century, but our current iteration of civilization is on a winning streak over several centuries. Our biggest problem during the last 120 years has been Each Other as wars and rumors of wars have filled up the history books.

In every discussion about the pandemic, you can see how deeply baked into our collective consciousness is this divine mission to subdue the earth and all its constituent parts, to make it serve our needs. Don't get me wrong about how to regard this -- everything I have for nearly seven decades taken for granted as the base line of "life" can only exist with Mother Nature safely subdued. We have exiled from our daily consciousness her weather extremes, her hungry lions and coyotes, her volcanoes and her earthquakes. When an earthquake kills hundreds or a brown bear goes rummaging through your garbage cans, we shake our heads in awe over the ever present threat of Bad Luck -- that is, when nature subdues a human, in violation of our Instructions From God.

Of course, intellectually, we all know that Nature holds all the trump cards in this war for domination. But that is not how our societies are organized. We have SCIENCE on our side and if we just follow its wisdom we can bring the virus "under control."

We've done it before! We subdued mallpox, polio, tetanus -- I'm too ignorant to recall how many vaccine shots I got as a kid. So, obviously, all we need to do is turn science loose on Covid and it will be brought "under control."

To question this theology is to brand oneself "anti-science."

Science made the life I have lived. I already miss it and I am grateful for the decades of riding around on airplanes and every other modern convenience I still take for granted. I wish it were sustainable. It is not. Maybe some new way of life will be sustainable.

And let us hope and pray that if we are ever encountered by Space Goons, they have never heard of the fucking Book of Genesis.

big difference, esp. if those adherents are speaking of building structures enabling human survival, mining resources in aid of that goal...or what. but i'm not familiar with what they imagine. but yes, 'self-interest' is at the core of of this nation, and none of it reach the level of 'benign (or was it 'enlightened?) self-interest'. wasn't that an adam smith creation/axiom? at least in one of his books?

your last paragraph seems to imagine that some benign but helpful visitors might believe that sucking oxygen out of our atmosphere would be helpful...in error? or am i missing your point altogether?

Everything on our planet is specific to the planet, surviving because it breathes the specific combination of gases or swimming in water. There is no other known planet with the same combination.

Aliens would come from a world with some other kind of atmosphere and would likely consider oxygen to be poisonous. If they were like us in a colonizing way they'd do whatever necessary to make earth air breathable, converting our atmosphere to sulfur dioxide or something that would kill all current life but would make them comfortable.

It wouldn't be anything personal.

Cassiodorus's picture

@Shahryar First off, there really isn't enough oxygen, or water, or even carbon dioxide on Mars to build up a sufficient atmospheric pressure there. You'd need a program with flying robots to find chunks of ice somewhere in space, probably in orbit around Saturn, and to bombard Mars with them. And even then there would be no guarantees. Mars currently has 0.7% of the atmospheric pressure of Earth. It's not enough to keep anyone living on the surface from dying of dementia caused by sustained impacts of cosmic rays/ x-rays/ etc.

Secondly, you have the problem of Mars' 37% Earth gravity, not to mention the zero gravity that will be endured over an extended period of time by the travelers who go to Mars. Peter Dickens:

The human body has of course evolved in an unchanging gravitational field on Earth: its form, structure, and physiology have been defined by terrestrial gravity. As Kevin Fong explains, “take gravity away, and our bodies become virtual strangers to us.”7 Once removed from gravity, the muscle groups of the human body start to deteriorate. (Experiments with rats in outer space show a third of their muscle bulk is lost within nine days.) The issue of changing gravity levels has become all the more pressing with the advent of long-distance spaceflight. It has recently been found, for example, that the human body is considerably stretched during a prolonged mission, a result of the spine straightening out when no longer compressed by the weight of gravity. This is just one of the many contradictions between the body and outer space.

I'm not going to say much here about the perchlorates in Martian soil, making agriculture impossible, or about freezing cold temperatures on Mars. You might also not want to forget the possibility of endemic infection that could destroy any sort of extra-terrestrial experiment that went on for long enough without contact from Earth.

Basically it's not going to happen. The problems I've suggested here, if they can indeed be solved at all, will not be solved by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, or the Federal government as currently constituted.

fills all sorts of empty spaces in us that are calling out for solutions to problems that we, collectively, have created for ourselves on this remarkable and beautiful thin film of life on planet earth. We think so much of ourselves that we tend to assume that we are worthy of being rescued.

I would like to suggest another perspective on the situation. In short, it seems possible that our lopsided and perverted expertise in creating things that explode may somehow pose a very real risk to a much wider swath of the universe than we could imagine. They may be closely surveilling our idiocy so that in the event that our ‘explosive’ technological growth continues to grow to the point where it threatens the lives of other beings not living on this planet they can quickly put an end to our nonsense.

Why would truly intelligent life forms care to save a malignant and reckless group of humans that might be the “viruses with shoes”, who are activelly contemplating space colonization, that Bill Hicks warned of?

Better we get our shit together, post haste, before someone pulls our collective plug, or our home bursts into flame, don’t you think?

as much as carbon PPM, the oceans are hot, methane still bubbling out of the sea beds at both poles, and plastic has already murdered may coral reefs. so even if some advanced technologies were able to neutralize the carbon somehow, could the planet still survive?

they are most likely AIs. Industrial civilization (and its accompanying exponential growth) kills worlds. We are likely to go extinct before our machine children are ready to take over for us, but perhaps on another world a species managed to create machine intelligence that was self-sustaining before they went extinct. Would a civilization of AIs explore the stars? Maybe, it would give them a way to pass the time for eternity.

artificial life exploring the stars...out of boredom. i love it!

a simplified note from my fractured dream-scape last night:

you stopped by while some of us were hassling with some weird metal boxes with wheels on the ground, and out of your backpack you pulled a plastic bag of some liquid stuff that exploded
into foam once you'd pulled a rip-cord...and up into the air you flew...like you had a jet

we were lighting up a cig and looked up to see a football field long boomerang shaped vehicle
just hoovering above us silently. It hung around for what seemed like eternity but in reality it was maybe just for a couple of minutes and then as soon as we took another puff it was gone. All this time we didn't hear a sound of a jet/propeller engine, there was only silence.

So when looking out at all the stars and planets that we can and can't see, yes extraterrestrial life imho exists. It would be crazy to think we are alone. Are they the extraterrestrials benevolent or malevolent, only our reaction to them might matter in determining that.

They claim to have had knowledge, from prehistoric contacts with amphibian extraterrestrial "teachers" that they would have needed science to acquire..Its attracted a lot of attention to them over a 50 year period, and a book "the Sirius mystery")

now it seems that the Sirius system may indeed be composed of three stars, Also there may be a sirius C. Which was also predicted by the Dogon teachers, as part of their "ancient myth".

half-wit that i am by now, i'd totally forgotten to bring Stephen Hawking's claim to bear as i'd planned.
One such (rather mild comparatively) from space.com Stephen Hawking: Intelligent Aliens Could Destroy Humanity, But Let's Search Anyway, , By Calla Cofield July 21, 2015

This week, famed physicist Stephen Hawking helped launch a major new effort to search for signs of intelligent alien life in the cosmos, even though he thinks it's likely that such creatures would try to destroy humanity.

Since at least 2010, Hawking has spoken publicly about his fears that an advanced alien civilization would have no problem wiping out the human race the way a human might wipe out a colony of ants. At the media event announcing the new project, he noted that human beings have a terrible history of mistreating, and even massacring, other human cultures that are less technologically advanced — why would an alien civilization be any different?

And yet, it seems Hawking's desire to know if there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe trumps his fears. Today (July 20), he was part of a public announcement for a new initiative called Breakthrough Listen, which organizers said will be the most powerful search ever initiated for signs of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. The same applies if we create self aware machines, we should treat them as we would want to be treated. We cant just treat them as our slaves (which is I am sure the main goal. Free/cheap labor to replce people, who will become much less economically important. (thnks to our children, and new life)

So, lets look at children whose "parents" are fighting a vicious divorce battle, trying to get their children to take sides. Is that likely to create a lot off problems for their kids, emotionally. It often does. Thats a horrible thing to do to them. We have to set a good example for the children. They can do any work. They could solve world hunger. By doing the work.l But we wouldnt do that, we wouldnt use that free labor to give the poor food. Would we? We should but trade rules attempt to make it so we cant do that. We have to clean up our acts. We have to look at the big picture in many moral challenges like this. We can't let the defaults we're setting up in the WTO to rule this situation. Because it blocks charity from governments in the way we should give it if that charity competes with businesses, like restaurants and banks.

That would lead to lots of human misery. So why are we doing this? You would have to ask them. For a good look at some of the controversies read Sarah Joseph's free book "Blame it on the WTO, a Human Rights Critique".

The human race has to resolve our problems peacefully before the technological singularity.

(Which will also cause a lot of economic issues for people because it will be possible to eliminate most work. )

For one example of what we should fix, A lot of people are saying we have to ban killer robots. I think that's a very good idea. And we should also try to change a lot of things that we currently do with global economic governance.

Overreach is a real big problem.

The trade rules that regulate national laws in areas like trade in financial services, or across borders. How nations laws impact business and how businesess interact with nations, which is now a real mess. My nomination for most important thing we need to change is our definition of public services. Its too narrow. There is a consensue it seems that that definition is too confusing and potentially could end up privatizing practically everything by mistake, which is not what we the people want. Thats clear. This is urgent, we need to fix this now. .
