Won't anyone think of the poor CIA?

You people are so selfish. All you want is to end a pointless war after merely 20 years, and tens of thousands of innocent civilians being murdered.
But have you given even a thought about the wants and needs of the CIA, you selfish bastards?
No! Our murderous spies are people too, and they don't want to leave and you can't make them.

CIA Director William Burns told the Senate Intelligence Committee in April that the CIA wouldn't be leaving Afghanistan when the military did.
"The CIA will retain a suite of capabilities, some of them remaining in place," Burns said.

So there! They won't be leaving because they need to continue all of their good work in Afghanistan.

CIA critics say operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere were plagued by serious problems. They say abusive interrogations of suspects amounted to torture, and drone strikes sometimes resulted in civilian deaths.

OK. Sure there were all of those Afghan wedding parties that they blew up, not to mention at least five drone strikes that killed 39 children or more EACH. And there were those war crimes. But you can't make an omelet without breaking some knee-caps, amirite?
And it's not like Afghanis minded about being tortured to death or blown up when Americans were doing it. Because we're the good guys.

Fortunately, the CIA has a back-up plan.

In effect, Washington is seeking to reposition some forces in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, which means that the first-tier troops, drones, bomber planes, and intelligence assets to be placed at bases or appropriate facilities in these Central Asian countries remain available in real time for intervention in the war against the Taliban.
As in Syria, local Afghan militia groups can be brought into the fight against the Taliban. Afghan warlords have worked with the Pentagon and the CIA previously.

Oh, good. Afghan warlords. Everything always works out when you partner up with warlords.

@humphrey Can you believe it? Pakistan doesn't want to host a CIA base either.

In comments with interviewers, Pakistani Premier Imran Khan ruled out the idea of hosting CIA bases for use against Afghanistan, saying that Pakistan would absolutely not consider US bases aimed at cross-border operations.

What did we ever do to them? I mean other than blowing up a school full of children?
It's OK, because we're the good guys. And we will always be the good guys no matter how many atrocities and war crimes we commit.

Even when the president tweets about it

“The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad,” Trump tweeted out in July 2017.
Just days earlier, the Washington Post published a story reporting that Trump had ended an Obama-era policy of sending money to train moderate rebels in Syria with the hopes of overthrowing Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Following the tweet, BuzzFeed reporter Jason Leopold sent a FOIA request to the CIA for any records relating to “payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad.”
...
The CIA appealed to the D.C. Circuit, which reversed the lower court and slapped away BuzzFeed’s suit on Tuesday.

Writing for a unanimous three-judge panel, Senior U.S. Circuit Judge A. Raymond Randolph said Contreras’ opinion assumed too much.

“One would hope that the district court’s assumption is accurate but who knows for sure? To establish official acknowledgment our precedents require certainty, not assumptions of this sort,” wrote the George H. W. Bush appointee. “The tweet here leaves too much doubt.”

Randolph concluded the Trump tweet at issue “was not an official acknowledgment of the existence (or not) of agency records.” (Parentheses in original.)

He was joined on the panel by U.S. Circuit Judges Robert Wilkins and Gregory Katsas, appointed by Obama and Trump, respectively.

I wonder who he was referring to as having "too much doubt"?
Because I have zero doubt.

Since when has the CIA announced that it would have assets on the ground in any country? Most people know that CIA agents are embedded in US embassies and consulates but never identified as CIA.

In this instance it's also a dangerous statement because Afghan forces will be on alert for CIA assets. Makes all Afghans that cooperated with the US military, CIA, DEA, State more vulnerable.
