Daily Kos continues to drift towards irrelevance

You probably haven't thought about DKos for a long time. I know that I haven't in over a year.
But for some reason it popped into my mind today and I decided to check on it's web traffic.
I found this.

To put this into perspective, this was from five years ago.

dkos_1_0.PNG

Just so no one is confused: DKos was ranked as the 1,000th most popular web site in the world five years ago.
They're now ranked 7,522 and falling fast.

It's ranking had declined from 1,000 to 5,000 even before Trump had left office, but now it's really collapsing because Orange Man Bad is gone, and like TYT, DKos had gone all-in on Orange Man Bad and Russiagate.

I'm still damaged by what they were lobbing at me in my final 2 years there (SHOULD'VE LEFT SOONER!), and if they don't represent the majority...well, that's very helpful to know. I WANT TO BELIEVE I have been suffering from a false consensus delusion, just as I was the day after Election Day 2004 (I absolutely get what the TDS set experienced - but all the more reason for me not to be sympathetic to what they allowed themselves to become because of it). In their case, it's so silly, too - HILLARY WON THE POPULAR VOTE, and yet with the exception of the Hamilton Electors gambit in Winter 2016 and one single-issue PAC I haven't heard from in a long time, nobody has said a word about the Electoral College since. That was the problem; Occam's Razor-simple.

Do you think the Cult of Wokeness is losing steam, finally? Talk about a cruel trick (if you don't think so, please do my vulnerable, barely-human mind a favor and give it a reasonable sugarcoating, or a reason not to despair; I won't take offense).

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Can you share your traffic-tracking source, please? I've been interested in trying that out for another site (hell, as long as there's an Internet, I'd call it an indispensable tool for everyone).

I am happy to see Dkos become irrelevant.

If you search on youtube you can find people starting to talk about it.
TYT's podcast is getting hundreds of viewers. Not hundreds of thousands. Just hundreds.

... I came to this site as a DK refugee and victim of their censorship/Banhammer. Dissenting voices not welcome there, so their declining numbers are, in my view, a victory for free speech.

@JCWeb ... part of the reason for the declining numbers for both DK and TYT may involve the fact that the 2020 Presidential nominating cycle ended last year (really, after the SC primary and the behind the scenes manipulations to grant Biden the nod and screw Bernie of any chance of winning). Alot of interest was generated when the race was still alive (in the 2019-20 time frame), so a fairer comparison might be versus a comparable period of time four years earlier.

that being More Neoliberal Than Thou is less popular than ever?

After March of 2016 it became a question of: why bother with those people? I still think it's amazing that there are so many of them that they could eke out a 7,522 ranking. Do they all have jobs promoting corporate candidates or organizations?

most of you remember whatever I uttered back then and I am the only one who doesn't remember that, I have a bit of Schadenfreude, if it were not so irrelevant.

Amnesia of your own words is sometimes a blessing, I guess.

Be well and have a good one.

had not an inkling of what freedom of speech is all about. There was a relentless effort to drive opposing opinions down to the point of the whole place being a celebration of group think.

The site may have less traffic, but the idea of stifling speech is alive and well and spreading terribly in this country. The tearing down of statues, the villanization of major historic figures (Jefferson, Franklin etc), the banning of speakers at universities, the accusations of racism and sexism and every other ism where they are not really occurring....
Recently I received a fundraising letter from Joe Biden. It was one of the worst examples of total bullshit I had seen in a long time. At one point he touts Kamala Harris as a great VP because she is the first black, Asian American woman in that job. Nothing about her qualifications. Totally racist and patronizing.
The biggest concern I have now is the mythologizing of people like Joe Biden. It's just downright dangerous.

The Gates Have Been Crashed. Now that that work has all been done, and all of the folks who once thought that they were participating in something worthwhile have been misdirected into other malactivities like IDPol and Russichinawhatevergate, its usefulness is largely at an end. It has served its purpose in the Long Con.

It might be fun (in an utterly masochistic sort of way) to wander back over there in 2022/4, when they crank up the band again in what will appear to be an effort to prevent these republicans over here from utterly blowing out those non-republican-identifying republicans over there. But at this point the fact that it has all been a sham, all along, is pretty obvious.

I miss Plutonium Page and Major Kong, but that's it. I'm very sad that I actually spent the money on that damnable book, as well as a "lifetime membership" over there, back when I had money to throw away and was naive enough to do it. Hindsight is always 20/20, innit?

That i wasn't able to delete all of my content.
I deleted a little over half of it when I got banned.
I made sure that I had deleted my 4 or 5 most popular diaries.

I never sent him a dime, but I created an enormous amount of content for that site.

I'm very glad that I can read your content here. After bailing out on Reddit WoTB, this is the only place left I bother with. Participation in wide-open social media has finally devolved into simple self-immolation, by and large: the process begun by The September That Never Ended is now pretty much complete...

@usefewersyllables ?Was it anything Bernie did, or the way of that site? I have heard of people saying it is screwed up, but don't know why, as I only attempted to go there a couple of times back in the day.

until the "Wuhan lab leak conspiracy theory" went mainstream. There hasn't been much of that there lately.

They also periodically get spammed/brigaded by shills of various flavors, usually neoliberal. But the shills usually stand out so glaringly that they can be ignored - and if they're ignored long enough, they go away again.

It's a free-for-all and intended to be so, with all voices welcome as long as they're reasonably civil. The basic idea, insofar as there is one, is that Bernie Sanders pointed a way out of the corrupt morass the US is currently sunk in, but when he couldn't get out front and lead, they headed out on the path without him. (It never was a "Bernie fan site", contrary to popular belief.)

Hint to anyone interested: If you do go there, use the old Reddit settings, not the fancy new ones. Otherwise you never know which videos will autoplay and which won't - even if you have your browser and Reddit both set to "No Autoplay", some will.

anti-science for me to tolerate. It's s little similar to gjohnsit regretting his contributions to GOS. I always tried to be a well-sourced contributor, but in the end I couldn't justify continuing to contribute to a site whose primary thrust has basically become "everything is lies, especially science, and especially when applied to medicine".

It didn't start out that way, and I'm sure that it didn't intend to end up there, but to my way of thinking it is now just another symptom of the overall societal effort to kill off the basic concept of objective truth. At this point, anyone can find "experts" and studies to support *any* position, no matter how outlandish- many of which are no more than marketing materials. It is just an unfortunate fact of the modern world.

It's like Heinlein said: "Tilting at windmills always hurts you more than the windmill". I decided to just leave it to the antivaxxers.

CNN, MSNBC Ratings Plummet

Although your '16-'17 graph suggests that there was a Clinton Crash after the '16 election. However, as elections drive dKos readership, it always increases as an election cycle heats up and then drops in the post election period. So, how did dKos do during the '18 midterms and '20 general election?

We can probably add that political blogs may not be as engaging to casual political junkies as they once were. Plenty of other superficial places to hang out these days. And a few places like C99 that welcome honest and informed discussions without needless rancor.

Why wouldn't they be?
The bigger/higher rated, the bigger the bot/spammer count.
Elections absolutely drive the numbers up, but it seems the election pause is pretty short, sometimes not at all, and it cranks up again. The perfect example is Trump. He began campaigning before he finished his coffee after the election was called.
