Need to send the Hypocrisy Meter in for overhaul - just wasn't designed for stories like these...

For anyone wondering if hypocrisy can actually be breathtaking, I give you...

Kiss My Grifts

I posted a comment in the last day or two about BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors recently revealed purchase of a quarter-acre "mini-compound" in Topanga Canyon, LA - a deal to good to pass up, apparently, at only $1.4 million. Because nothing says revolutionary zeal and concern for the downtrodden like chilling out in an 88% white elite Left Coast enclave, presumably.

Well, while those who pared their food budget to contribute to BLM, or those whose livelihoods were devastated by having their businesses or places of work destroyed in last summer's riots, arson and pillaging mostly peaceful protests might find that interesting enough, it seems that, like a shopping channel commercial, There's More!

Apparently, this is not the first, and maybe not the most expensive acquisition she has made.

2016 - house in Inglewood (LA) $510,000 (now worth near $800,000+
2018 - house in South LA $590,000 (now worth $720,000)
2020 - "custom ranch" house and hangar for private plane on 3.2 acres in Conyers, GA (includes access to community runway) beating those SoCal prices at a mere $415,000
2021 - Topanga Canyon property $1.4 million

She and her wife were also observed last year shopping for a unit at "The Albany" on New Providence Is., Bahamas, (units are said to go for from $5-20 million) but it is not confirmed that they purchased anything.

Sources: NY Post

But, as a self-described "trained Marxist", I'm sure that there is nothing about this to lessen her determination to see the abolition of private property...

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”
― Booker T. Washington

and then we have:

Lockdowns for Thee, But not for Me

Trish Foster. Chief operations officer (whatever that is) in the administration of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

It seems that just days after Whitmer's warning against travel to Florida and reiterating about mask use, social distancing, etc., Foster - who had a family member, apparently her son - down with Covid, took off for an (apparently) mask and social distancing-free holiday in sunny Key West.

And, of course, posted pics of the whole thing on Faceplantbook. Which were subsequently taken down, but thoughtfully saved by Breitbart.

Probably doesn't bother Whitmer all that much - doubt if she has any re-election prospects and can likely cash in elsewhere, anyway - but it didn't stop her from blaming White Nationalists for exposing it.

I'm sorry but the evidence does not necessarily lead to the conclusion in either case. Are there justified reasons to be suspicious? Damn straight!

Your conclusion of hypocrisy seems stronger for Trish Foster but even she may have a reasonable explanation. My first thought in her case was, "What lockdown?" Is MI locked down? I know damn well FL is not. I think it's grossly poor judgement to make that trip and expose yourself to that environment. It takes a real idiot to post evidence of an apparent failure to take appropriate precautions on Facebook. If that is what it shows. I'm not sure. Yet, those are the times we live in and the ethics we've come to expect from our public servants. In my mind it is that we accept that level of behavior which partially puts it on those of us who have lived the past 50 years. Still, while I can't imagine how she might adequately explain herself, I can see it may be somehow possible. Were she to resign in short order in the absence of a believable explanation, I'd have no problem finding some respect for her. I'm not holding my breath for obvious reasons.

If in the case of Patrisse Khan-Cullors your suggestion is that a wealthy person is hypocritical by supporting or participating in founding and/or leading BLM, then I strongly disagree. I shouldn't have to explain why. Again, like Foster, suspicion is appropriate but evidence of her profiting from her position in founding BLM or some impropriety is needed. The times we live in suggest something improper (they all do it, right?) but we need more than someone's joint real estate acquisitions and holdings with a spouse to justify the claim of hypocrisy.

@on the cusp with people deciding for themselves whether to travel or not. Each of us has to make an informed choice based on our situation. Distancing, masking, and washing our hands, though, are precautions that have the potential to affect not just ourselves but family and anyone we come into contact with. It's obviously still up to the individual except where it isn't. In a community such as C99 where most of us, at least, claim to care for others and not just our own selfish interest, I find it hard to think any of us would intentionally put others at risk. we can discuss or argue the efficacy of these measures all we want but they cannot be reasonably dismissed simply because we don't like them. I'm sure you'll take suitably protective measures out of a sense of self preservation if for no other reason. You're far from a nut or hypocrite.

My position is as it has always been: appearance, "I heard...", suggestion, belief, it seems, charge/counter charge, or any of the other things except hard verifiable evidence means squat. We have the likes Rush Limbaugh to thank for unleashing his weaponized methods of smearing those he doesn't like on the US. These stories are nothing but data until more is known.

@on the cusp which is different from it being a fact. Casting doubt on legitimacy is every bit as effective at crippling a movement as anything and is better in many ways than a direct assault. How better to cripple BLM than making those sympathetic to their cause hesitate to donate or join for fear of being used? An attack like all the hand wringing over violence as well as the violence often being initiated by enemies than BLM itself is so obvious that it only has an effect on outsiders and makes the media and all the loud talking bloviators rich.

The environment we find ourselves makes sorting reality from belief or a plan to delegitimize with lies and innuendo almost impossible. In some cases it really doesn't matter if BLM was an astroturf operation. The movement brought about a lot of awareness of the problem regardless of whether it was put together by some opportunists looking to make a buck or name for themselves. The organization has to solve that problem if it can and doesn't make on bit of difference to solving the problem of police violence against black people or those who haven't the power to protect themselves. I guess it's my thinking may be the difference. Doing the right thing doesn't require a right reason nor is the act diminished by some asshats' intentions of using the movement for personal gain. I lost the allure of self righteous indignation a long time ago.

@vtcc73 Perhaps my understanding of the astroturfing is what BAR is discussing. Voices with money get heard. Voices with only grassroots organizing do not get the platform, and the message just might be different.
Since I will never be privy to the info on the organization, I will accept that the grassroots who are in disagreement have legitimate grievances.
The goal of ending police discrimination against blacks, workplace discrimination, and bringing a reckoning that white supremacy is a fiction, are as great as goals get.
I think those great goals are hurt by individuals who use the difficult process of social change to profit by their work. Especially when they thumb their nose at the rules the little people of all races are mandated to follow.
As an aside, off topic, how are you viewing Ecuador's elections?
Hope you and yours are well.

But actions, as they say, speak louder than words. In Khan-Cullors' case, she has publicly self-identified as "Marxist" yet her actions do not *appear* to be very consistent with abolishing class structures and the abolition of private property. You are correct that what is known so far is not proof of grifting and she has had one best-selling book, so has some resources independent of her BLM positions.

Still, although I would usually prefer Jimmy Dore or the Hodge Twins for comic relief, I'd love to see some transparency on C-K's financial dealings and an explanation from her about how this is somehow *not* grossly hypocritical...

@on the cusp Florida does not have a statewide mandate on face masks as far as I know. The governor has been against any mandated requirements state wide. Many individual cities and counties have mandated face masks, but there are no penalties for not wearing one. A lot of businesses have varying degrees of mask requirements. Some require them and even have a person at the door to hand out a mask to anyone who does not have one. Other businesses, notably home improvement stores say they require them, but I see more unmasked white males in those home improvement stores than anywhere else.

Compliance with safety standards for COVID varies from area to area. There is a high rate of compliance in my home county outside the college students, but we have two universities and one college in Tallahassee and a lot of the students go mask free when out and about in town. If you are going to Key West, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor dining which helps mitigate the risk. Key Westers are very independent and rebellious thinkers so I would expect to see a lot of unmasked people there.

@gulfgal98 have different ordinances or rules in place. I specifically planned a trip that made getting inside buildings with people very minimal. It will be mostly outdoors. And we can stay away from people when we do go out.
If we do go to a restaurant, we will sit outside, or get take out, and go to the beach to picnic. We would like to say we had a Key West experience, but sometimes, you just get as close as possible to the goal.
Hope you are doing well, my friend.

Looks like unbridled hypocrisy.

From the Black Agenda Report from December of last year:

Ten chapters of the national Black Lives Matter organization are now in open revolt against the hashtag founders and their tightly controlled formations, demanding that the BLMGNF and the recently created Black Lives Matter Political Action Committee and BLM Grassroots be made financially and political “accountable.”

Snip

Over the past six years Black Agenda Report has often been critical of the “troika” that treats the mass movement as their personal vehicle for upward political, professional and financial advancement. We hope that the revolt of Black Lives Matter chapters will spark a deep and wide examination of the direction of the U.S.-based Black liberation movement and its relationship to the global struggle against racial capitalism and Euro-American imperialism.

Snip

This is part of the statement from the 10 BLM chapters that are in open revolt against the "Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation".

In the spirit of transparency, accountability, and responsibility to our community, we believe public accountability has become necessary. As a contribution to our collective liberation, we must make clear:

Patrisse Cullors, as the sole board member of BLMGN, became Executive Director against the will of most chapters and without their knowledge.
The newly announced formation, BLM Grassroots, does not have the support of and was created without consultation with the vast majority of chapters.
The formation of BLM Grassroots effectively separated the majority of chapters from BLMGN without their consent and interrupted the active process of accountability that was being established by those chapters.
In our experience, chapter organizers have been consistently prevented from establishing financial transparency, collective decision making, or collaboration on political analysis and vision within BLMGN
For years there has been inquiry regarding the financial operations of BLMGN and no acceptable process of either public or internal transparency about the unknown millions of dollars donated to BLMGN, which has certainly increased during this time of pandemic and rebellion.
To the best of our knowledge, most chapters have received little to no financial support from BLMGN since the launch in 2013. It was only in the last few months that selected chapters appear to have been invited to apply for a $500,000 grant created with resources generated because of the organizing labor of chapters. This is not the equity and financial accountability we deserve.

(If I've clipped too much from BAR, they can sue me.)

Taking in millions in donations and no transparency for a "social justice" organization, is not a good thing to me and SCREAMS Hypocrisy. Like one of those tele-evangilists who ask poor people to donate money to the church and they fly around in multi-million dollar jets and live in multi-million dollar mansions, create their own broadcasting networks to raise even more donations.

And speaking of the "church", that is one area that has cashed in on keeping Black people "believing" they should accept their slavery and do as the master says.

(apologies I was in Dallas yesterday and feel like punching someone.)

@RantingRooster During the past year I too have heard tidbits about disputes within the BLM movement. I really haven't paid much attention to it. It's nothing new or surprising. Also, their organization, their responsibility to run it. Not mine.

The problem is twofold as I see it. There's power, money, and fame to be had and we are a nation of people who will find ways to justify doing anything to grab any of those things for themselves. I'm sure most of the little people are dedicated to the movement, dying to pursue their cause so to speak, but the leaders seldom seem to have the level of character needed to do the good work selflessly. There is only opportunity that many see. Which brings up a good question. Is it the movement leaders or the chapter leaders who are corrupt? Both? I'm not sure it matters. The movement and those who are most involved and have the most to lose will continue to suffer while the corrupt profit. And the wheel keeps on spinning. Welcome to the US.

BLM was co-opted almost from the git go and made into another way to fleece the sheep and let them pretend that an organization was helping them. The sheep is not the people who were desperate to see change in the way they are being treated by most white cops they meet and many times those of their own skin color. Rather it is the upper elite class that treats everyone as sheep and whenever a socialist group rises up against all odds it is co-opted by the PTB. And the reason why people took that chance to get some changes made is stories like this latest one where 2 cops, one white, one possibly Hispanic pulled over a black man because they said he had no license plates. His temporary tag was plain to see no matter how dark it was. Read the heinous story of another black person being persecuted by cops under color of law and making him very afraid that he would die any minute.

This is beyond hypocrisy. It is taking people's hopes and dreams and using them for nefarious means. But maybe her wife is rich. Maybe she was rich before she got her job. I don't know. But stories like this with no context don't serve anyone.. but when I 1st read this I just lol. What else? This is just another view of Nancy eating ice cream in front of starving people during a pandemic after refusing to bailout the masses. They can't help themselves because they cannot connect to our lives and our levels of pain any longer. People also gave Jimmy Dore crap for buying a $2 million home in LA. So what on either?

Some background:

It’s unclear how much Khan-Cullors financially pulls from her work with BLM, but the group brought in a whopping $90 million in donations last year. Since creating the movement, the activist has published a memoir as well as signed a deal with Warner Bros. to help create content that centers around black people’s stories.

As for the aid that went to Florida. Well of course. There have always been two sets of COVID rules for the elite and the rest of us. Do as we say, not as we do which has been photo'd over and over and will be again and again till this is done. Look at how many members of congress flew without masks after they got on the plane. Look at how they criss crossed the country while we were locked down. The reason that got any play is because she defied the guv's orders.

A top aide for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing criticism for defying Covid-19 travel warnings from her boss and traveling to the less-strict Florida for a vacation.

Tricia L. Foster, appointed by Whitmer as her chief operations officer, took her trip to Florida only days after the governor warned against doing exactly that.

However did she really?

“People who are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine can travel safely within the United State,” provided that they wear a mask, “stay six feet from others and avoid crowds” and follow hygiene rules, the CDC said in an April 2 update.

We can't have it both ways. Either it is safe to travel or the VAX don't work. Time will tell. A large number of people in Michigan have gotten COVID after their 1st VAX and 3 have died. I think more info will be coming soon if it ain't censored which a lot of news good and bad has been. That doesn't give me confidence. If it's bad someone can show why. If not let me decide.

Speaking of Michigan still:

Michigan prosecutor threatens to bring CRIMINAL CHARGES against Governor Whitmer for forcing nursing homes to take Covid patients

"If we find that there has been willful neglect of office, if we find that there's been reckless endangerment of a person's life by bringing them in, then we would move forward with charges against the governor," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said Monday in an interview on Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ. ....

Whitmer's office issued a statement to WXYZ, calling Lucido's comments "shameful political attacks based in neither fact nor reality." The administration's policies "carefully tracked CDC guidance on nursing homes, and we prioritized testing of nursing home residents and staff to save lives."

#Whitmer copied most everything from #Cuomo on nursing homes.Except one HUGE difference. Cuomo stopped Covid(+) people from returning home back in May.Whitmer still allows it in MI, even vetoed bipartisan bill to ban it.
Release the data Madam Governo

That's my soapbox.

@snoopydawg After the initial BLM interactions with Bernie and Hillary it was apparent that Hillary's campaign knew exactly where and when BLM "activists" would be when she gave a speech in NH. Unlike Bernie's encounter, Hillary completely had them in check. I saw later the beginning of a huge indoor rally where one of Bernie's people had to instruct the crowd how to react to any BLM interlocutors. Hillary supporters were bashing Bernie pretty hard on racism at such sites as TOP because of those two encounters. It all looked like a setup.

It gets shoved down our throats, and there is NO practical escape. I can think of no practical solution save to silence those cyber-cancers directly, wholly, and permanently (and that would only be a START) - and there's no longer any way to do that that would both be legal and not absurd (are the stockholders going to listen to and heed a well-reasoned argument why they should voluntarily obliterate everything they've built?). Twitter is one of the easiest formats to spot and skip over, so you are lucky in that regard. I don't think Twitter will be relevant forever, and the time will come when it will be uncool to post there.

Meanwhile, there are specific items that I research on Twitter, Pandemic topics for example, where I find candid information from people directly involved with the science — long before it becomes news. (If it ever does.) Important clues are frequently dropped there that people should know about.

They should start waving an alternative banner, something to clearly indicate a schism; of course it would get hideously attacked, but it would go a long way to signalling the end of BLM's presumed moral authority ("moral authority" should be recognized as an oxymoron from square 1, of course, but it seems too many people have already devolved too far for us even to begin talking on that level).

"Black Lives Matter" made sense in 2014-2016; it should never have gone from a slogan to an organization. The latter is not automatically superior to the former.

Chaos is not the problem; Order is. I have so much to say that touches on all this and SO MUCH MORE, but now that the narrative of the past 30 years has been all but completely erased and rewritten, I not even be understood or given a fair chance anymore well enough for me to even begin pitching it. Following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and others, the rampant anti-Black racism, police brutality and systemic injustice in America has become clearer than ever. The New York Times recently reported that Black Lives Matter may be the largest movement in U.S. history, and recent polls suggest that 15 to 26 million Americans have attended protests this summer.

In 2013, Twitter was a key platform when the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter was launched—and now, in 2020, Instagram has emerged as a similarly powerful platform for activism. Within the U.S., Instagram now has nearly twice as many users as Twitter. Many have used the platform to learn about protests to attend, and they’ve shared real-time footage of police violence as it unfolded. And with its emphasis on images, graphics, and video, Instagram has become a powerful tool for thoughtful, nuanced conversations about racism and racial identity, creating a massive communication channel between educators like Ibram X Kendi and nearly anyone with a smartphone.

Today, shareable graphics have become one of the most powerful ways for creators to distill and amplify critical information about race and Black-led initiatives. Let’s look at four examples to examine what makes them so successful.
