The Weekly Watch

Viral Evolution

While it is true viruses are sometimes misread by the host and mutate (like a cold virus for example), this week I want to speculate how the SARS-CoV-2 will and is causing societal evolution. Viruses have always been agents of evolution as they attach and pull away from our DNA and RNA, but this global pandemic is going to fundamentally change societies and the way we interact...especially in the short term. If and when a vaccine is developed, some sense of normality should be re-established, but societies will never be the same...like 9/11 and the 2008 crash. So get out your crystal ball and let's think about what's coming around the bend.

crystal ball too.jpg

Change is inevitable. Entropy, increasing disorder, is a natural law. The coronavirus is imposing rapid change for people who resist disruption to our everyday lives. But adapt we must and adapt we will. Humans are adaptive creatures. We will survive this pandemic. As COVID-19 spreads around the planet, more and more survivors will be immune, and eventually a vaccine will (probably) be developed.

I want to start by discussing the changes I'm making. I'm taking one trip a week into town for groceries, recycling, tractor gas, garden supplies...whatever we think we might need for the week. I'm being careful not to bring the virus back into our home. I'm wearing gloves, at present no mask, and maintaining distance as best I can in the stores. Upon return, I'm setting out the grocery bags in the sun, as well as the mail and any other new things going into the house. I'm starting to take off my shoes outside. Our bathroom is just inside the door. I'm washing my gloves with soap, and placing them back outdoors in the sun to dry and decontaminate.. Thirty seconds of UV light is supposed to kill the virus. Then I'm taking off my town clothes and putting them in the washer (which is conveniently in the bathroom), and immediately taking a shower. Then I put on clean virus free clothes and a clean pair of gloves.

Then to the groceries and mail. I use an empty beer or La Croix box and sort through the mail recycling 90% without opening, and put them in the box. That gets placed in the car for next week's recycling. Bills and other items of interest are placed in a to do box which I tend to after 3-5 days. Groceries, I'm removing from my reusable cloth bags and wiping down with a clorox solution (3/4 cup Clorox® Regular Bleach in a gallon of water; wash or wipe this solution on the surface; allow to stand for at least 5 minutes; rinse and air dry). I'm using the clorox mixture to wipe the door knobs I used to get in the house and my car handles, steering wheel, and shifter. Then it is back inside to wash this pair of gloves. Finally the groceries can come in and be put away. What an ordeal!

This is pretty much the protocol Dr John Campbell recommends (6 min)...

Time to change this rotten system!
worker pyramid.jpg

In thinking of long term changes like hand shaking and public hugs becoming a thing of the past...a quaint old habit, brings to mind an old Sci Fi book by Asimov "The Naked Sun". The story is about a society where it is taboo to be in the presence of another human, yet somehow there was a murder. E. Bailey, a robot detective is sent to the planet and in a fun mystery solves the case. I always wondered how a human culture could evolve to not want human contact. I now have a better understanding of how that condition might arise. When the book was written there was no Facetime, Skype, nor Zoom which might have given him the idea. These digital platforms might provide an avenue to work together during the pandemic so that we can organize.

This is part of an email I received from Nick Branna working to build a peoples party...

History is unfolding before our eyes. For three years we have laid the groundwork and now the progressive movement is turning towards a new party more fiercely than it has in many decades. #DemExit and #NeverBiden have gone trending nationally in the last few days. The most hugely popular videos recently by Krystal Ball, Jimmy Dore, and Kim Iversen have all been about not supporting Biden and/or ditching the Democrats to start a new party. People are signing up and volunteering with our movement faster than ever. The momentum and the movement are with us!

We have to be prepared for the likelihood that Bernie will drop out in the next few days though. He is reportedly in talks with Biden and hasn't raised money for his campaign or purchased ads since Tuesday. Between his presidential runs and Our Revolution, the last five years of progressive strategy have revolved around Bernie and banging our heads against the brick wall that is the Democratic Party. When Bernie leaves the race there will be a huge vacuum of progressive strategy and it's up to us to fill it.

The establishment chorus demanding that progressives to capitulate to Biden will reach a fever pitch. The movement's organic momentum is strongly towards a new and genuinely progressive party, but some of Bernie's surrogates and Bernie himself will likely ask progressives to join Biden, a racist and senile livelong servant of Wall Street who said he would veto Medicare for all if he got the chance.

This is the moment for Medicare for all, a Green New Deal, emergency housing, basic income, a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures, an expansion of SNAP and Social Security, and an end to the war budget and corporate welfare. That's what we stand for. And that's why we need a people's party.

Join our national call on Thursday, March 26 at 9:30 pm EDT to talk about the primaries, the pandemic, the People's Convention and how we make positive and permanent transformations in our society in this moment of crisis.

social change.jpg

So the intro graphic suggests our success and failure is determined by the choices we make. When people are scared they tend to make poor decisions. However as Naomi suggests this could be an opportunity to re-invent this failed global for-profit system.

The global finacial collapse should cause us all to question this system. Max and Stacy have been doing so for years. They had a couple of excellent commentaries this week.

As I've thought this week of the long term effects and adaptations to this crisis and the possible outcomes, I have hope that we may come out on the other side with a better system. It is going to take a year to hurdle this crisis. In that time let's explore in our minds and on this forum how we might re-emerge a better more humane society despite the corruption of this present collapsing system. Let us be the change!

The coronavirus was designed to condition people to not interact so that we are self isolated from each other and therefore easier to control. Capitalism has always used the myth of rugged individualism against us, but we're starting to understand the con, so now it needs to make a direct attack on our collective instinct. What can be more useful than a disease that kills us if we get close enough to each other to talk?
I have no desire to say that American capitalists (or Chinese dictators) developed the virus to prevent us from working together to overthrow them, but it is logical and natural that they would take advantage of the circumstance.

COVID is isolating us. We need to push past that and keep communicating and organizing online.

We have a convergence of catastrophes - disease, economic collapse, and ecosystem degradation...all at once. Top it off with the global corporate capture and we sure have a full plate of problems. May be we can use this as an time to educate folks of their predicament and suggest possible solutions.

I just prefer to be proactive rather than defeatist. However your point is well made...TPTB will take advantage of our fear. In words of FDR - we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

the social evolution you speak of until the elephant in the room is removed. This elephant is the Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex. It is the financial trough from which those in power greedily feed from. We see it at work every single day in every nook and corner of the halls of Congress. Very few elected officials can resist it's seductive lure for long.

The question is, how can we destroy this beast which has continuously pillaged the nation since it's creation from the ashes of WWII over 70 years ago? Will it take the destruction of the nation by some cataclysmic event such as war or pandemic?

Even now, as the nation is facing the greatest threat since the war that created it, Congress is working harder to protect The System than they are in protecting the people. They quibble about three or five hundred dollars to support desperate people but stand unified to feed the insatiable beast with untold trillions of dollars.

Martin Luther King Jr. spelled it out:

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.”

I suggest that spiritual doom can and will destroy the nation.

How can we destroy the mafia branch of our government which isn't ever mentioned nor discussed? We can start by pulling it out into the light. The CIA, FBI, NSA, etc dirt and corruption needs to be broadcast loud and clear. The problem is we have no megaphone from which to shout the message. It is a dilemma that needs wide discussion.

This is a Duran video about the a military exercise in several European countries. I am listening to it now. I read another headline, that was so outlandish and conspiratorical in saying the US wanted to invade Europe, it was too much for me to even start reading it.

Hopefully someone will make sense of the various sources out there. There is something about confrontation with Russia. Huh? Baltic states need to be protected from Russia? Huh? Still love to be the DEFENDER of Poland?. The virus got into the Russians's head?

The Duran’s Alex Christoforou and Editor-in-Chief Alexander Mercouris discuss the Pentagon's decision to scale back (effectively cancel) NATO’s massive military drill named 'Defender Europe 2020' due to the coronavirus threat.

The US Department of Defense has announced that it will halt further troop deployment to Europe for the Defender 20 exercises, and recall thousands of already deployed troops from Europe, returning them back to the United States to help deal with the COVID-19 crisis.

Apparently just a couple of minutes ago, the German governmet has decided on stronger movement restrictions inside Germany.

Sorry for not being more clear. Artificial confrontation is not my thing, so to speak.

"Logic dictates to work together with Russia by trading with them", sez Mercouris. Ok, I will trade a little silver dose which a friend of my father made for him for his birthday, while both became big buddies during their stay in a Russian POW camp in 1943/44 against the little Russian dolls. Handmade, silver, no Russian can resist that offer, no? Wink

And I recommend to read the hilarious efforts of Alexander Mercouris to sell you the Duran shop's merchandise. The guy's salesmanship makes me always lol.

Have all a non-confrontational remainder of C99's Sundays conversation.

Thanks for all the work you do here for us.

Looking back, it seems that we should have been more serious about a 3rd party back in 2017.
Is it possible now ?
Bernie raised a pile of cash for his campaign. What if all of us had been donating that money to a 3rd party campaign, not just this year, but every year for the last four ?
That would make a start. Bernie has committed door-knockers in every state, those could be party staffers. Of course, we'd need "star power", someone at the top of the ticket with name recognition. Bernie is probably too old now.

Wearing gloves is a good part of the battle. But a person must also avoid scratching their nose or touching any part of their face while wearing the gloves or contaminants will transfer. I find that quite hard, as I'm accustomed to rubbing my eyes when they're tired and scratching small itches that pop up here and there on my face.

Also, a mask may be essential equipment. Ejected droplets containing coronavirus apparently remain airborne for only a few seconds (unlike measles, which stays in the air for two hours). But it's hard to maintain adequate distance from cashiers and baggers and other humans at all times, so some airborne exchange is inevitable. An additional benefit of a mask is that if you do unconsciously touch your nose or mouth with a gloved hand, you shouldn't directly transfer anything into your body. Just remember not to touch your eyes or else wear goggles, too.

My trip to town is 25 mile round trip plus running errands and so on it is about an hour before getting back home. It is a long time not to touch your face. However as Dr. Campbell suggested with focus and practice it can be done. To avoid others, I'm going early. Our grocery opens at 7 AM...no one is there to speak of except workers. At some point we are all likely to be infected. All we can do is the best we can. I would love to avoid it until there's a vaccine, but...

It looks like the aerosol last 3 hours so a mask would be helpful...

The study I cited is from the World Health Organization and concerned droplets. The new study (3 hours) concerned aerosols. It defines droplets as being larger than 5 microns while aerosols are smaller than 5 microns.

In the 3 hours study, an aerosol was created with a nebulizer and collected in a sealed 40 liter drum (roughly the size of the interior of a microwave oven). The humidity was 65%, higher than the 40% in WHO's analysis. Also, a nebulizer creates smaller vapor and the density in an enclosed container is higher than an open room.

Bottom line, though, is that infection from human coughs is possible, but exactly how much risk is currently unknown. A mask is probably warranted in some circumstances.

Here's the new study with 3 hours. Here's an article on human cough aerosols.

@enhydra lutris Here's to hoping ameriKa is on the New Silk Road....dang forgot we are in a trade war w/China....but why

https://thesaker.is/we-are-all-stoics-now/

Earlier this week a delegation of Chinese medics arrived at Malpensa airport near Milan from Shanghai on a special China Eastern flight carrying 400,000 masks and 17 tons of equipment. The salutation banner the visitors rolled out on the tarmac, in red and white, read, “We’re waves from the same sea, leaves from the same tree, flowers from the same garden.”

In a stance of supreme cross-cultural elegance, this was inspired by the poetics of Seneca, a Stoic. The impact, all over Italy, where people still study the classics, was immense.

The Chinese were consulted in advance and they preferred Seneca to a Chinese saying. After all, for China, a 5,000-year-old civilization-state that has confronted perhaps more than its share of instances of luan (“chaos”), there’s nothing more rejuvenating than post-chaos.

China is donating coronavirus test kits to Cambodia. China sent planeloads of masks, ventilators – and medics – to Italy and France. China sent medics to Iran, which is under unilateral, illegal US sanctions – and to Iraq, which the Pentagon is bombing again. China is helping across the (Eurasian) board, from the Philippines to Spain.

President Xi Jinping, in a phone call with Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, pledged in the wake of Covid-19 to establish a Health Silk Road, a companion to the New Silk Roads, or Belt and Road Initiative.

Thus, finally, there’s the Philosophical Silk Road celebrated at an Italian airport, a meeting of Greek/Latin stoicism with Chinese stoicism.

I'm also interested in the antibody test. Suppose you are totally asymptomatic during your 2 + week isolation and now have antibodies against the virus. You're immune. You don't need a vaccine your body made its own. You no longer are creating nor spreading the virus except by picking it up on a surface. But the current test is for the antigen...the virus itself. You wouldn't test positive even if you've had the COVID and recovered. So I'm interested in the antibody test for folks too. They are getting one together in the UK.

thanks for all the SARS CoV-2 info. Especially Dr. John Campbell. Have already sent that out to a bunch of folks. The NYT has opened its Coronavirus reporting to the general public. There are two articles about ventilators that are excellent. Also Amy inteviewed a woman scientist from Stanford and her closing question was - how long do you think this will last. She said, well, it took the Chineese 2.5 months. And smiled. No way we can pull that off. Maybe in CA. Seems like we are on track now if we can get the equipment we need.

Just got a text from one of the people who showed up to help with the campaign on campus. They wanted to know what SC has in place for workers that are displaced. I will check after I post this. Gotta start here. I imagine that folks are working on it here. That's what we do.

Okay folks, be well. Make sure you find ways to keep your social connections going. Necessary for mental health and who knows what else. Right? I have received two texts from young women who I worked with up on campus offering to go shopping for me if needed. So far instacart is working. Lol Yay!

Be well, be safe and be kind to yourself and those you love. Flowers and hearts to y'all...

One of the 1st test in microbiology we did was inoculating and growing a plate of bacteria. Then exposing it to 30 sec of UV which killed the bacteria. Viruses are of course very different organisms. Some sources claiming sunlight won't kill them at all...
https://www.wral.com/fact-check-nc-congressman-says-sunlight-can-kill-co...

The CDC says otherwise...
Ultraviolet (UV) light is a very effective way to kill viruses under certain circumstances. Sunlight produces high intensities of UV and finely dispersed aerosols of the kind that infect humans are readily penetrated by the light. Virus inactivation has never been measured under those circumstances, but it must be very rapid.
However, the UV light must penetrate to the virus particle. One reason why the interior of structures may be dangerous is that the reflected white light from outside will not contain sufficient UV. Similarly, solids or liquids provide a challenge to UV penetration.
https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/technical/hps/faq.html

Sunlight or, more specifically, solar UV radiation (UV) acts as the principal natural virucide in the environment. UV radiation kills viruses by chemically modifying their genetic material, DNA and RNA. The most effective wavelength for inactivation, 260 nm (55), falls in the UVC range, so-named to differentiate it from near-UV found in ground-level sunlight, i.e., the UVB and UVA portions of the spectrum, 290 to 320 nm and 320 to 380 nm, respectively (51). Nucleic acids are damaged also by UVB and UVA but with lower efficiency than by UVC radiation (64).

Two issues must be considered to determine solar inactivation of biothreat viruses: estimating the UV sensitivity of viruses for which there is little or no experimental data and estimating the solar UV at specific geographic locations.

The overwhelming majority of published information on UV inactivation of viruses has been based upon exposure to UVC (UV254) radiation from a low-pressure mercury vapor (germicidal) lamp, with the primary emission at 254 nm. However, UV254 is not found in the sunlight that reaches the earth's surface; the ground-level virucidal solar UV wavelengths fall above 290 nm (16). Fortunately, the primary photochemical processes that damage the viral DNA or RNA occur at all the solar UV wavelengths, varying only in the efficiency of the different wavelengths (55). Since there are few published data that describe the survival of viruses, and none for threat viruses, following exposure to solar UV radiation, extrapolation from UV254 data will be required for most viruses. This extrapolation can be made using wavelength dependence (action spectrum) data.

Most sources are suggesting 30+ min of sunlight is required....
This study of another coronavirus found UVC light inactivated the virus after 40 minutes exposure. Inactivate is used as the term, instead of kill, because viruses are not considered to be alive. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/17002634/

Hope that helps. Sounds like 30 sec is a low ball and 30-40 min more certain. Bleach wipe down is certain.
