Tulsi Gabbard lost her political future & moral high ground with Biden-2020 endorsement

Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has dropped out of the 2020 presidential race to endorse her ideological opposite, establishment darling Joe Biden. It's political suicide – for her, and for the idea of a progressive Democrat.

But while swearing fealty to the presumed nominee may have scored her some points among her establishment critics, most had a clear ulterior motive, using her exit as further leverage to pressure Sanders to drop out.

At the same time, Gabbard's erstwhile supporters feel betrayed, and justifiably so. A candidate who built her campaign on opposition to the business-as-usual Democratic policies of cloaking foreign military intervention in humanitarian jargon, Gabbard instead called for taking the trillions spent on the slaughter and plunder of hopelessly-outmatched Middle Eastern nations and using that money to rebuild the crumbling American homeland. It was a message that resonated across the partisan divide, even attracting some disillusioned 2016 Trump supporters who had voted for the president based on his promise to end the endless wars in Syria and Afghanistan, then watched in horror as he stepped up the bombing and tried to open another front in Iran.

It's no surprise they aren't taking it well. How are voters supposed to trust any future “progressive” candidates after such turncoat maneuvers from not only Gabbard but Sanders, who in 2016 turned on a dime to stump for establishment pick Hillary Clinton after a coterie of unelected superdelegates declared her the winner following a primary process which leaked emails revealed beyond a shadow of a doubt to be rigged? Gabbard's political seppuku should force progressive Democrats to come to terms with the fact that there is no room for reform within their party.

Oh I think we have gotten the message that the democrat party cannot be reformed from the inside. But what is

It is shear insanity to think that Biden will do a tinker's damn for the 99% and especially since he spent 8 years in the MyBoss administration that didn't do a tinker's damn for us.

So now the next step is how to take the DP down and find a way to get a real opposition party up. This has been tried for generations and I have no ideas for how to do it. Remember Eugene Debs got to run for president from prison. The FBI has admitted to keeping progressives out of the DP. Fine. You don't want us? Good luck.

Saagar makes great point in this video. Turning the country back to the people who set up this economy is shear insanity. I agree.

Joe Manchin doesn't want to burden future generations with a bailout that many desperately need. You know, Manchin the democrat who votes with repubs more than he does dems just like he did yesterday.

I am off for my walk in the rain with my lil bud, Charlie. Have a great day folks. Stay well.

But leftists -- young and old -- would be better served by taking some deep breaths and holding our fire (other than to say that "Tulsi is dead to me") to regroup. The "I will never vote again" just plays into "their hand" and has no real world impact.

A vote for Bernie in the remaining primaries isn't wasted. Being adults and absent a black swan, we know Bernie won't win the nomination. What his voters and supporters expect (and have paid for) is for him to carry on through the formal nomination of the DP candidate. After that, we know he will endorse the nominee because that was a precondition for him being allowed to run at all. Still better that he tried and failed instead of not running at all.

It's at that point, when Bernie ceases to be relevant, and when collectively Bernie's supporters (Bernie will be irrelevant) will have maximum power. The open question is how to use it.

Bernie can be Jewish and support the Palestinian cause. Tell me what I'm missing.

Edit to add: this is not necessarily directed at you wokamile, it is just a question that I've had for weeks off and on. Your comment on "FP" here just lead me to finally ask the universe: what's up with that...

@peachcreek up to date on Tulsi and Modi, but I wonder if much of that "support" by her is a bit overblown, something like the way her critics greatly misread and misinterpret her meeting with Assad.

If she had appeared with Modi on stage when he visited the US and TX recently for that big rally in Houston, that would have been a major problem for me. Probably the end of our passionate relationship. But it never came to that, happily.

Beyond that, I suspect Tulsi has made public statements in favor of non-discriminatory treatment of all people in India, and elsewhere. Generally as I understand her public stances, she has been consistent, at least in recent years, in respecting all types of human differences. A truly good person, iow, who has evolved like many of us and sees things differently now including taking some fierce independent stances. I understand her -- I too am usually not seen marching in lockstep.

@polkageist It was very clear when he said that he believed that Biden could beat Trump and the fact he refused to attack Biden in the last debate.

When Bernie endorses Biden, then what? Will people here attack him as hard as they have Tulsi? The Democratic party operates like the Mafia. It is nearly impossible to go against the DNC. Tulsi found that out after 2016 when two highly placed donors sent her a letter which basically threatened her with political extinction.

Further Tulsi first volunteered to endorse Bernie but the Sanders campaign turned her down. It was after being turned down by Bernie that Tulsi endorsed Biden. This news of this has just come out today. While I still do not support her endorsement of Biden, it might explain why she heaped praise on Biden while doing it. Tulsi's older brother Jai posted his frustration with the Sanders campaign on Facebook.

What matters to Tulsi is that after her rebellion against Hillary in 2016, a truce has now been declared, Tulsi's done her penance by endorsing Biden, and has now been welcomed back into the Dem Establishment fold.

At the end of the day, Major Tulsi is still an institutionalist at heart. Unlike Bernie, she's not built for life outside the embrace of the system.

@Not Henry Kissinger she's made of sterner stuff. I don't see this one as weakness or capitulation, but a) seeing the reality of the C19 situation and b) fulfilling her pledge to support the D nominee. technically that only occurs at the convention, but the race is effectively over now, has been for days. And there will be no more meaningful campaigning for a good while.

Meanwhile, why not use this time of maximum leverage, however small it is, to perhaps get something worthwhile on the other side, or be in a better position to do so. Waiting until July, for Bernie or Tulsi, is not very smart.

She could have simply pulled a Warren and dropped out without endorsing until the nominee is actually crowned - whoever that may be.

@Not Henry Kissinger perspective, Tulsi dropping out and endorsing him is a benefit, even if not a major one as it comes from a 2% candidate. And it's much more of a benefit now, as he would seek to try to unify the party, clear the decks and concentrate on the fall election, than an endorsement at the convention.

On a personal and practical basis, Tulsi may have strongly factored in the C19 crisis and how it rendered moot any further campaigning, even the strictly online type. Voters are tuned out, have put Biden down in ink as the nominee, and are focusing their attention on coping with the C19 shakeup of their world, including financial.

Further, as a current member of the NG, she may well anticipate very soon being called up to serve, and for more than just two weeks.

In any case, the primary season is over -- we are only waiting for better party leadership to call for postponing the remaining primary contests to late May/June, and the public has moved off of politics as more existential threats emerge. Under these crisis circumstances, she has only moved up her timetable of endorsement, and used it to optimal effect.

There's no leverage in quitting. None whatsoever.

Leverage is staying in and making the bastards be seen to rig every fucking state in the Union.

Leverage is plowing through to the convention with as many delegates as you can and forcing a floor fight.

Leverage is being willing to walk out with those delegates and start a nationwide third party.

Now do I think Bernie will do any of that? No.

But THAT's how you get leverage. Not by bending the knee when we're not even halfway through the primaries.

@Not Henry Kissinger and there's a time to realize the fight is over. Neither Tulsi nor Bernie was ever going to use any delegate leverage to threaten a walkout or leave to form a 3d party. Sounds revolutionary and principled in online discussions, but it won't be happening out there in RL.

Bernie, who's actually an official member of Dem leadership in the senate, was never the revolutionary some of his campaign slogans would suggest, and he's not likely at all to want to create too many headaches for his "good friend" Joe Biden. And I think it's clear Tulsi still wants a political future playing an important role working within the party system.

Going 3d party is easier said than done, and it usually ends up being easier to lose and become politically irrelevant that way.

Despite all your smug condescension and premature victory lapping, we out here in the actual real world still see a corrupt and sclerotic party with no vision and no bench that needs to hold elections during pandemics to suppress enough votes to make it close enough to rig the vote totals for a Reaganite troglodyte who can't string two sentences together.

If you think Berners are going to vote for that, regardless of what Bernie decides to do, you're more out of it than Joe is.

Going 3d party is easier said than done, and it usually ends up being easier to lose and become politically irrelevant that way.

You seriously don't think a Bernie party can pull 5% in every state to qualify for 3rd party status? That truly is blissful thinking.

Seems to me the Dem's only chance right now is to hope Bernie DOESN'T decide to go third party. Because if he does you might as well start brushing up on your Whig history.

So by all means keep telling yourself the fight is over, and you won. Because whatever the final outcome of these sham primaries, out here in the real world the Democratic party establishment has ALREADY lost.

And a 3d party from the left would only guarantee Trump a 2d term, which effort the GOP will likely be heavily invested in and actively encouraging.

Neither of my preferred candidates won. The establishment wing, using their considerable resources and enlisting the help of a willing MSM, has convinced voters that Biden will do, and then a large bandwagon effect set in. Stating such facts does not imply approval of how this played out.

And I've always been clear I have never been emotionally attached to any one candidate, as many here seem to be. I've criticized both Tulsi and Bernie at various times, as I have never been a cheerleader poster. But they were always in my top 2.

As for the rest, I don't set out to lecture anyone, nor tiptoe around lest I never offend the most sensitive. But I did feel it important to offer another perspective which hadn't been heard much as 99% of the posters took one side.

But I do take small comfort in knowing my minority view (among left online progs) is generally shared by at least one other here, as well as quality analysts like Michael Tracey (on TG) and Krystal Ball (on Bernie). Small company in number, but quality.

Sorry, but did I miss the part where they held the convention yet? Or where they officially cancelled the primaries for half the states remaining? Or where Joe Biden got a brain transplant?

What you also seem incapable of grasping about insurgency candidacies is that the fight IS the goal, the outcome is secondary. As long as we keep fighting, we continue to weaken the Dem establishment bosses rigging our democracy, which at this point is far more important to many of us than beating Trump ever will be.

Then again, maybe you do grasp that, which is why you are doing your part for the gaslighting crowd trying to demoralize us with premature claims of rigged victory?

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

@Not Henry Kissinger the Left has been so ineffective and usually irrelevant to date -- thinking the goal is just the fight. Maybe they should begin thinking of the goal in terms of a more important outcome -- like winning.

And winning is what is going to get the attention of party bosses, not the noble good fight.

The primary contest is effectively over, and that's apparent to all with eyes to see. The remaining state primaries will be mere exercises in counting a less than impressive number of votes, as people concentrate on more important matters directly related to their survival.

Last post in this exchange -- your tone is getting too personal and the anger is palpable.

Rules say 1991 needed for the Dem nomination.

We cancel the remaining primaries, nobody qualifies - even with all the super delegates voting for Joe.

So what now?

That will not be Bernie, may not be Biden, could be someone who sat on their ass through the whole disaster (like H. Rodent Clinton).

But the point is to make them steal it. And to be seen to do so.

If the Dems can't run a honest game, they need to be called out. Capitulating, especially now, simply rewards their criminal behavior and harms the movement in the process.

Tell you the truth, I'm not actually too concerned about Bernie dropping out right now. But it is kinda fun to watch the bum's rushers throwing the kitchen sink at Bernie because they know time is not on Biden's side.

Throwing Tusli at Bernie now is a sign of desperation far more than electoral strength. The irony is that they think it will help push Bernie over the edge but all its doing is further galvanizing his support.

Besides, all this faux party unity around Joe Biden won't last, nor perhaps will Joe himself.

@Not Henry Kissinger … where the candidates were asked a "gotcha" horse race question, i.e., if one candidate has a plurality but not a majority of delegates, should that person automatically become the nominee? Well, at the time Bernie was ahead, so everyone said no, except for Bernie, who said yes. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, if Bernie stays in, TPTB are going to bring up the sound bite from the debate to make Bernie look like a liar and hypocrite. So, honestly, I expect Bernie to bow out before the convention, possibly within the next week, citing Biden's massive lead, the coronavirus pandemic, and the desire to unify the party to defeat Trump.

And, frankly, at this point, given all that's happened in just the past four days, I've changed my view on the relative electability of Biden or Bernie vs Trump. This upcoming election is going to be a referendum on Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and the resulting economic fallout. In that case, the name at the top of Dem ticket isn't really going to matter very much.

but what is the point of endorsing Biden? She is not running for re-election, and the Democratic party wouldn't piss in her face if she was dying of thirst. I can't see any current or prospective reason for endorsing Biden and she can't be stupid enough to think Biden would actually be a decent President. Can she? She campaigned against regime-change wars and Biden has to be in the top 10 cheerleaders for invading someone, anyone. With McCain gone he may be in the top 5 war cheerleaders. She should have just announced the suspension of her campaign, thanked everyone for their support, and gone surfing.

Apparently I have a lot of company with those that want their donations back.

Can't recall another politician in the past fifty years that in one single move stabbed small donors in the back the way Tulsi did today.

@QMS
stabbed them in the back in 2016 isn't an adult. He was always honest about that condition for his run as a Democrat. Same holds true this time. If he ran out of campaign funds, suspending his campaign was also acceptable. What's not acceptable is to drop out or suspend and endorse during the primary cycle the candidate that stands for everything his/her supporters rejected. To go into the convention with whatever paltry amount of power that one has earned and be a voice. Bernie did that in '16.

@Marie The DNC cheated him out of the nomination and thus breached their contract. He absolutely knew it. He still went along.
He set the example. Take it up the ass for Team Blue. I do not find that honorable, and that is why I didn't contribute a red cent to him this time. The DNC did it again, he will take it up the ass again.
Not a life lesson I intend to implement into mine To accept a cheat, an outright theft, and BRAG about the spectacular cheats and thieves is NOT RATIONAL ADULT BEHAVIOR.
Tulsi just did the same damn thing.
Cooperating victims.
He disappointed me.
I never particularly liked Tulsi.
