A majority of inmates don't need to be there right now. They can come back later to complete their stupid incarceration — a lose-lose arrangement that continues to degrades our society and civilization.

I worry about the uncommon silence coming from our savage and soul-crushing prison system. The grip of the pandemic-run-amok will rapidly turn these overcrowded hellholes into viral freak factories. The corrupt prison health contractors will allow the coronavirus to concentrate and mutate as prisoners are infected, reinfected, and cross-infected again and again — until, finally, a monstrous mutation evolves into an extinction-level epidemic that is worthy of our national dystopia. Jesus wept.

We live in the boonies. We don't have much in the way of road noise, but normally have plenty of air traffic. I realized this morning the sky is quiet...another reason that this reminds me of 9/11.

Good news about Chelsea. Her go fund me raised enough to pay her absurd fine and she is out of jail just in time to self quarantine.

Y'all take care. I'm focusing on the garden this week - starting summer crops in flats. Early crops are already planted. Need to weed a bit...mainly wheat coming up through the straw mulch. Heard an interview with an ex-pat that was in China recovering from COVID. He was using his quarantine time to paint, learn Russian, and catch up on reading. Sounds wise.

I have a semi-brown thumb, so I start with starter plants which, of course, I'm not supposed to go out and procure. My spinach chard seeds, which I did have a little success with once, say to plant from April through June, and we're determined to take our spring camping trip in April come hell, high water, common sense or Gavin Newsome. It isn't like it will be crowded in our camp sites and we can self-isolate fine except at check in. {Hey, use gloves to take the campsite sticker and hook up any hook ups, etc.)

Ah well, more rain today so maybe I'll make lentils. My menu this week called for a tiny bit more shopping for Monday and Friday, to be done today, so time to wing it.

friends are asking for $30,000 for living expenses and to give her time to heal from her heinous ordeal. But one thing that wasn't mentioned on the original fund was that she needed 3% more than the amount because GFM keeps that amount for running unless they got the fees waived. I am betting she will meet the new amount today and then some. At least I hope so. What a remarkably strong woman she is. She failed to do their bidding and I don't know if I could have taken what has been thrown at her through the last few decades. I wish O had pardoned her, but at least she is out of hell.

CALIFORNIA — California is asking all bars to close and residents age 65 and older, along with those with chronic health conditions, to stay home in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Sunday.

The policy applies to bars, nightclubs, wineries and brewpubs. Restaurants have not been ordered closed, as they have been in Illinois and Ohio, but Newsom said the state will require them to reduce capacity by half and practice "deep social distancing" by separating patrons by about six feet.

Of course we are not testing because we have no tests because we can't use the WHO's tests because it isn't proprietary or something, and ergo we aren't contact tracing, so the epidemic will spread just as fast as otherwise. We are, in effect quarantining a random selection of the population and won't flatten the curve. Our plan appears to be to let it spread, but sequester those most likely to need medical care, since we aren't prepared or ready to provide any. With that in mind, we will also try to find some way to help the homeless ride it out.

NO snark, April Fools' Day is still 2 weeks away.

@enhydra lutris It seems to me that is key. Without testing and tracing contacts, I don't see how we can ever stop it in this country. As slow as we are in getting to that, it my take thousands of people to do the tracing by the time we start.

Human nature being what it is, there is only so long people will cooperate with staying home and avoiding contact. People will get tired of it and start doing things they shouldn't.

@Granma @Granma

People will get tired of it and start doing things they shouldn't.

If they were doing testing and cntact tracing in order to sequester the infected and those they had contact with who aren't yet symptomatic, most of society would pitch in, if only reluctantly, for the duration, I think. But when it is mostly theater people are a lot less likely to do so.

The current "plan" of accepting that there will be a full blown epidemic until there is treatment available and the wealthy have all received all the treatment they need by trying to keep those most likely to need medical care if infected ISOLATED will rapidly erode good will and "community spirit". TPTB aren't remotely trying to ease the situation at all and haven't been since day one, so people will be getting very testy very soon; well before five weeks from now I suspect.

I suspect that guys like Dick Cheney already have respirators for their own private use should they need them as well as concierge doctors and stand-by nursing. An article in The Guardian reported that the wealthy are securing private health workers and looking to Harley St. for testing and other supplies.

The is the end result of all the rugged individualism BS. Drain us dry and use all that wealth to take care of the “betters.” I expect they are looked forward to a world with millions gone. Makes me want to go and die in their favorite house, the ultimate die-in.

All stocked up with thee major exceptions, no booze, no smoke and no money. Damn.

Do have plenty tasks and chores to do in this apt, if the motivation comes. Call from ski resort, they are closing, haven't been there since jan. 17th, and have to go and get my gear; a project for tomorrow.

Son sent me a beautiful poem about Willow, the doggie they sadly had to return to the pound; a bittersweet memory of kindness. Filled my heart.

Thanks, el, for this OT and great tunes from memory lane, a convertible, top down, and a drive in grill. Smile

Well, yesterday was the first day in nearly a week where we didn't have people lining up around our store waiting for us to open. For those who just didn't want to face the crowds and stayed away for the last couple of days, seeing the empty shelves as they entered the store prompted a lot of head shaking. One scandavian women went so far as to say that people need to stop being so selfish and pull together as a community. Couldn't agree more.

While we are still getting deliveries, right now everything is on a cap. So things like meat, eggs, and frozen food disappear early. By the time dinner time rolls around, all the perishables are gone. In the evening we get our delivery of shelf stable items. The other night, as I am bringing out a stack of boxes filled with potato chips and other snack items, a woman asks me if we are bringing out more food.

Me: Only the non-perishables right now.

Customer: You mean like the meat?

Me: Um, er....not really.

Yesterday, one of the delivery trucks was 8 hours late. When people saw us bringing out stacks of bread, a crowd began to gather. To prevent confusion, our manager had 5 people working the stacks, and 2 people asking customers what they were looking for. Good call on the manager's part and fortunately we avoided what I've seen happening at other stores happening at ours. So far, the only testy exchanges I've seen is from people not wanting to be in the picture frame of others taking pictures of the empty shelves. Fair enough, I guess, what with social media these days. Other examples of testiness come from customers after hearing we don't have whatever they want, and it's getting old, real quick.

Customer: You don't have any more meat in the back?

Yeah, lady, we're all just scrubbing the empty shelves down because we can't be bothered right now to fill our bare shelves with the food we have hidden in the back unless asked. You know what we have in the back? Absolutely fucking nothing. And some woman actually poked her head into our back room just to make sure when she was looking to see if we had more toilet paper.

Sigh. A lot of things have changed in our day to day operations. Our store hours have shortened, our shelves are bare, and we now have someone greeting customers at the door with sanitizer wipes.

Strange times.

off SNAP during the epidemic.

"Especially now, as a global pandemic poses widespread health risks, guaranteeing that government officials at both the federal and state levels have flexibility to address the nutritional needs of residents and ensure their well-being through programs like SNAP is essential," Howell wrote.

"The low-income Americans targeted by USDA's final rule depend on monthly SNAP benefits to avoid hunger," she wrote. "These SNAP participants may wield little political or economic power, but, nonetheless, USDA's proposed changes to take away nutrition benefits from almost 700,000 people prompted 'more than100,000 comments,' the 'majority' of which the agency concedes were opposed to the proposed changes."

"Notwithstanding these critical comments," continued Howell, "USDA proceeded in the challenged final rule to adopt changes that, in some respects, were more draconian than those initially proposed."

This is great news. The court has also stopped him from requiring work requirements on Medicaid even before the CV epidemic hit.

Now we need them to block his many deregulations that he has been doing right and left for his friends.
