Russia, the beginning of the end of Cold War II?

Lavrov and Kerry

"If Russia can help us and it is right now. Russia has helped to bring about the Iran nuclear agreement,
Russia helped to get the chemical weapons out of Syria. Russia is now helping with the cessation of
hostilities [in Syria]. And if Russia can help us to actually affect this political transition — that is all to
the strategic interests of the Unites States of America," Kerry said in an interview to CBS "Face to Nation" program.

This is not quite admitting that Russia and the US are allies in Syria, on the other hand it is an admission that we are cooperating. Kerry has made regular trips to Moscow to visit with Lavrov. Recently he spent some time talking to Vladimir Putin in a closed session. I am hopeful that this could be a turning point in our relationship with Russia. There is definitely some greater understanding and appreciation going on between Kerry and Lavrov. I was somewhat disappointed with Kerry after he was defeated by GWB, well... maybe very disappointed. I have watched him as Secretary of State and I am impressed with his statesmanship, quite the opposite of the previous warmonger/Foundation-grifter/prevaricator in that same office.

The Syrian Arab Army is liberating Palmyra from ISIS with the air support of both Russia and the US. It's beyond belief that the US and Russia are not cooperating.

My personal view is that there are far more reasons that the US and Russia should be allies, than adversaries. We have had a barrage of derogatory stories about Russia and Putin in the Western media. This has been mostly propaganda, worthy of Pravda from Soviet Union days. Russia is on the same page in fighting ISIS, perhaps even better focused. We have an immense amount of history in common and appreciation of good science and technology. Russia has been called an existential threat to the US. That's true in the sense that Russia has a very believable strategic nuclear triad. We are very assured of mutual destruction. How about countering this by being friends and allies? It's a lot cheaper and safer than starting a new arms race.

The image specifier is "right" aligned. The image size is just right on my desktop using Firefox. I'm also having trouble creating a break between the image and the quoted text. Any suggestions?

Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.

I removed the right alignment attribute and centered the image. Then removed the break tag and that brought the text up closer.

I added a right sidebar earlier today and that narrowed the center margins, because of that the image was too large to align to the right and wrap the text.

I think Kerry has done a great job as SoS, and very pleased to hear that we're talking to Russia. I agree with your assessment on this. The neocons only want to keep Russia as a boogieman (one of many) because fearmongering makes it easier for them to suck the Treasury dry.

The relations between nations are entirely interest based. Opposing interests breed competition and sometimes conflict. Mutual interests can be the basis of compromise and cooperation. Neither of those are hard and fast rules and both are often a matter of how important the interests are to each party. The human beings involved in discussing the issues have a large influence in whether there are agreements or compromises possible. For now Kerry and Lavrov have an issue upon which they can agree and work together towards solving.

I think what we are seeing in Syria is a merging of a strong interest by both parties in seeing ISIS being eliminated. (A stated competing interest is that Russia wants Assad to remain in control while the US and NATO would love for him to disappear into a black hole.) The reasons that Russia wants ISIS gone is almost certainly different from the reason the US wants the same result. There is a basis for cooperation, to what degree I don't know, but it will change as the status of ISIS, Syria, and the entire mess in the Middle East evolves. I don't see one event with cooperation having any more lasting effect than say the decades long cooperation of the US and Russia in space has had. Perhaps, it can be the basis for increased trust between the current diplomats negotiating some future issue but the tension between the competing interests are more likely to have more influence.

The last thing to expect is friendship. The US and Great Britain are often described as friends in both countries, no? Yet, the US has no problem using electronic means to intrude on their people and into their government's affairs. Our intelligence services are known to have spied on all of our friends at NATO and probably everyone else in the world. I hardly think anyone would honestly suggest that is how friends would act if they want to maintain the friendly relationship. However, common interests create an environment where it can be forgiven after a given amount of outrage and bluster. I even think this is a better mode for a relationship between countries. Think how bad it could get if you caught your best friend taping your phone conversations or videoing your bedroom activities. That's the stuff of future murder charges.

Allies? Hitler and Stalin were allies as long as it suited Hitler. A year or two later it would have been Stalin whose interests broke the alliance with similar nastiness.

There's only one faction you left out. The Israelis.
As our government has allowed what has happened since the establishment of the state of Israel, will it have the common sense to agree with most of the worlds nations desire?
Or is Israel a nation to go to war for?
Once again, the united states has a major problem.

The complexities of multiple interrelated relationships, interests, and capabilities are mind boggling. Add the histories, old resentments, cultural differences, language, religion, and thousands of details big and small make for an environment that is too complex to negotiate with any confidence. Modern Israel is a problem over a century in the making. So many terrible decisions and bad actors. Were it not for oil I'd be surprised if the rest of the developed world wouldn't be content to box them in and let them kill each other. That's a decision devoid of any morality but, once again, nations don't have morals, only interests.

I personally don't think Israel is worth nearly as much as many in our country seem to think. We've often gone against what would normally be our best interests to protect and/or promote Israel. Is it guilt for failing to do the moral thing in the 1930s and '40s? Is it religious considerations? I don't know. I do think they're a bigger liability than asset that wouldn't be given a second's consideration absent oil. I bet if oil were of little significance we'd cut them loose. Until we get energy independence we'll be stuck in the family feud that is the Middle East. The only other possible solution would be that they all spontaneously reject killing each other over century old bullshit. Not gonna happen. It's lunacy.

Climate change and water availability. Israel is such a tiny place, and look at what happened to agriculture in Syria. That whole part of the world is increasingly going to have little bargaining capacity, other than that which fossil fuel brings. It's ugly.
