@Bollox Ref Great pic BR! Beautiful! I love that purple color, and detail/resolution. Reminds me of an existential poppy I once met.

@QMS wow that one cool bumble qms. That white distal couple segments on the abdomen are awesome looking compared to the more standard black and yellow. Very neat beast and pic.

@QMS

My grandpa made one from scratch or a kit. We had little fuel capsules that looked like sugar cubes to run it. Seeing your pictures brought back the smell of the steam.

He worked on big steam engines too. Did some work on trains. Guess that's where I got my love for them from. I was bummed when they took the clickety clack out the rails.

Still have my steam engine that I've had since I was a little boy. Amazes me to think I still have it after all these years – living all over the place, divorces, other disasters, etc.

Mine originally used the "...little fuel capsules that looked like sugar cubes..." to fire the boiler. I converted it to alcohol; much cheaper to run. I fire it up every now and again to amaze the grandkids. It always makes them jump when the whistle (DAMN loud!) lets loose to keep the boiler pressure at a safe level. The whistle works under the same principle as the weight on a pressure cooker. Did I mention that it's DAMN loud?

I bet your grandkids are having as much fun with it as we did. You are making memories for them that they will cherish their whole lives. My poppa has been gone since 1988, but here I was tonight back in time.

There is a little tray where we placed 4 0f the cubes to put in the oven. Is that like yours? Last I saw it was at my brother's house and his son was very young. My poppa also collected tube radios and I have two of them as well as the grandfathers clock radio he built when I was in kindergarten. The damn thing used to be so tall back then. I haven't checked to see if it still works. It has the vacuum tubes.

Fun trip done memory lane tonight.

Yes, the steam engine burner tray sounds the same to me. After a few times buying the fuel pellets, I decided my pennies could find better uses and came up with the idea of packing cotton into the tray thingy. Then I soaked the cotton with rubbing alcohol, which took care of the expense. The alcohol was even hotter than the pellets and lasted as long, too. Win, win. I use the same cotton in it today.

Tubes! LOL! All my ham radios are tube units from the mid 1960s. My main guitar amps are tube units of the same mid 60s vintage. My dad, a trained radio man (among other things) always urged me to never throw away a tube, even if it "tested" bad, so I have quite a few of them. If the screens/grids haven't melted, or the heater failed, I keep them. Funny that many of them work fine after sitting in a box for a few years. Who knows what the deal is with them. Tube voodoo.

@lotlizard

Tube testers used to be practically everywhere. Drug stores, the local hardware store, the grocery ... everyone had one. I think they were mostly there to sell tubes, as I found them to be pretty much unreliable. Dad never used one, although he had one for customers in his store. Of course, he sold tubes, too.

They are somewhat akin to buggy whips today, even though tubes are still in use (and there are even new developments with them). Still, you'd better know what you are doing when you mess around inside tube equipment – there are lethal voltages coursing around in them and it's all looking for some place to go.

Here is the aftermath from a Cooper's hawk that got a couple of collared doves in our yard:

My husband saw the hawk on the ground with a dove, called me into the room and we both watched as it flew off with it. There were two spots like this. I often hear about this happening in people's yards and see photos but didn't think I'd get to witness it myself. Pretty cool!
