Especially because Trump and his fellow goons keep cutting funding and keeps making people jump through hoops to stay on social programs. If you really want to help families raise their kids better then stand behind them. Again 1.5 million kids are homeless. This should embarrass every member of congress. but he recently said something about Maduro and Columbia's president and wants them removed. This is where Bernie is the weakest. IMO. His foreign policy expert is pro regime change and too much pro war. Duff?

I posted a video from Jimmy Dore that talks about this. I don't remember which essay I did it in. But at the end Jimmy talks about his foreign policy guy and he is not impressed either. Last time I called out Bernie for this and I was told to shut up. I don't think so. I was anti war during Obama's, Bush's and Clinton's tenures and I will not change for Bernie. This is too important. We have no business killing people anywhere.

@snoopydawg

I think it's more than a bit hyperbolic to conclude that Bernie is "pro regime change and too much pro war."

First, Bernie is no advocate of and is even opposed to shock doctrine which destabilizes legit elected governments.

While he has been critical of certain left government leaders (for good reason in most respects), he has not called or pushed for regime change although he has insisted that democracy be honored.

He's also buddies with Evo Morales and was the first to call out the coup in Bolivia for being such (and then Tulsi joined in after about a week, making Bernie and her about the only folks in solidarity with the left there).

Not anti-war? Only Bernie keeps voting against Trump's "defense" budgets. He speaks in support of cutting "defense" spending. I'm sure Tulsi will find a place in his cabinet, most likely with a big impact on issues of war and peace. Maybe taking a cue from Dennis Kucinich, who I'd guess will also find a place in a Bernie administration, the Defense Department would be called the "Department of Peace."

Will Bernie increase spending on NATO military "exercises" which unnecessarily and stupidly put Russia on the defensive? I don't think so.

I mean we can quibble on all the details and I'd probably agree with you on many of your criticisms but I simply don't see another viable candidate out there who will try to stop the arms race and the development of a new cold war. And I find no reason to think that Trump offers us any solace in that respect. His too ardent support for Israeli military excesses puts us all at risk. Of course, a Bloomberg(Clinton) will do that too. And hopefully, NH will be the end of CIA Pete.

Finally, thanks for putting the thread together. Even I couldn't make it past the half-way point of the debate.

Edit/Add: Chris Matthews foams at the mouth:

@Wally always a Cold Warrior, is Chris's motto. Comes in handy as we are in Cold War 2.0.

Grew up in an Irish Catholic family that favored Nixon in '60, when Chris was a teen. Nixon. I don't think Chris ever lost his early conservative leanings. As he was about to roll out his slender book on JFK, I recall him noting on air that he preferred JFK's "cold warrior side". He also peddled the myth that Kennedy and Nixon were "good friends" as a result of serving in the senate together.

Became buds with Roger Ailes, who helped establish Chris as an on-air political motormouth with his first show on CNBC in the 90s.

Spent much of the 2000 campaign slamming Gore, while he supported GW Bush. Helped run antiwar host Phil Donahue off the air in 2003. CM treated host Donahue brutally in a guest appearance on Donahue's show towards the end. He acted as if he knew PD was about to get the axe, so had carte blanche to kick him in the teeth. Great guy.

As for Bernie's moderate FP statements, it's probably about as good as to be expected for a top tier candidate in the current political climate. FP isn't registering much with the electorate, and we see how well Tulsi has fared with her bolder approach. I give him a pass at this point, and would hope for better once in office, Tony Perez willing.

You know, I haven't watched even one second of any of the Democratic "debates," but I have read all the essays and associated comments regarding them here on c99. As time progresses, with every one of these "debates" I am ever more and more thankful that our intrepid members here at c99 have taken one for the team and suffered through them – because I would never be able to stomach it.
