Heading South to Costa Rica
It is our first trip to this central American country. The fact that they disbanded their military and created a network of parks is part of the appeal...along with their rich biological diversity. Costa Rica alone has 75% of the Central American Biodiversity. In 1970 the Costa Rican people wanted their beautiful country to be protected so future generations could share its natural flora and fauna. That year Costa Rica founded the Costa Rica national parks system that is admired around the world. Costa Rica has maintained a higher proportion of its land mass for national parks. Much more than any other country in the world- with 10.27 % protected as national parks by Costa Rican law. An additional 17 % set aside for reserves, wildlife refuges and protected zones. Almost one third of their country is protected. The Costa Rican government also protects areas of historic and archaeological interest. Pre-Columbian settlement areas and early battlefields are protected with the same fervor as the rainforests and wildlife preserves. Protecting the natural resources of Costa Rica has far-reaching implications because of its amazing biodiversity. https://www.costarica.org/national-parks/
So come along on this trip where we'll have three main stops over about a three week period. We'll visit the highlands (San Vito), the jungle (Osa Peninsula), and the beach (Playa Zancundo) all within an area less than 100 miles. We'll see what we can learn and experience....
All our time will be spent in the SW corner of the country, starting with the highlands in San Vito.
San Vito is home to the Wilson Botanical Garden, the most famous botanical garden in Central America. It is located in The Las Cruces Biological Station. The garden features beautifully diverse plantings of tropical and subtropical ornamentals, representatives of unusual plant families, and rare and endangered plants from Costa Rica and elsewhere.

We'll also visit the international park and UNESCO site, La Amistad.
With its area split between the countries of Costa Rica and Panama, La Amistad International Park is one of the first attempts to manage a protected area between two different nations. Travelers who want to experience ecotourism during their Costa Rica vacation should definitely make an effort to visit the park, as it encompasses nearly 500,000 acres of the country.
Natural World Heritage Site- Including the territory shared with Panama, the park totals more than 990,000 acres and was declared a Natural World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. The highest point located inside the park is Cerro Kamuk, which sits at an elevation of 11,644 feet.
The protected environments that can be found within La Amistad International Park include cloud forests, tropical lowland rainforests, glacial lakes, alpine grasslands and an oak forest. With this impressive variety of ecosystems, the national park boasts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna that showcases Costa Rica's natural beauty.
Abundance of Wildlife - Overall, it is estimated that two thirds of all the wildlife in Costa Rica can be found at La Amistad International Park including a significant number of representatives of the country's treasured monkey species, the jaguar and the puma.
Bird watchers visiting the park will be delighted to know that 500 species of bird reside within the various ecosystems, including the famed resplendent quetzal and nine of the 11 endangered species living throughout the country.
I saw a caged quetzal in Guatemala, but this trip I hope to see one or more in the wild.
The international park is huge. We will only see the small portion in Puntarenas (see map above) We won't even get to the largest portion of the park in SE Costa Rica...
We're looking forward to experiencing the natural beauty, biological richness, and Tico culture typified by their phrase, Pura Vida. Here's a couple of takes on the meaning of the phrase...
If you have been to Costa Rica, or even if you have read about it, you most likely have heard the term pura vida (pronounced poo-da vee-da). Directly translated it means “pure life” in Spanish. However, in Costa Rican Spanish, it means so much more.
During one of my first holidays in the country in the 1990’s I remember our guide saying “pura vida” again and again, nearly to the point of annoyance. As time went on throughout our week together, I came to understand its versatility and vibe.
It is a warm, comfortable greeting, “Hola, pura vida” (think “aloha”). It is a toast, “Salúd, pura vida.” It is a friendly goodbye “Ciao, pura vida”. It is also a way to shrug off frustration. For example, your day at the immigration office took many hours and then you were turned away for missing a certain document, forcing you to make another appointment to try it again (hey, it happens!) “Ahhh, it is the pura vida bureaucracy.”
...
If there were only one Spanish phrase to learn before coming to Costa Rica, it would be pura vida, because you can use it in almost any situation. It is used as a greeting and as a farewell; you can use it for “I’m doing well” or “Everything’s cool”; you can use it for “Oh well!” or “That’s life!” It also can be used for “You’re welcome” or “No worries”–or just about any exclamation like “That’s great!”
Pura vida does translate literally as “pure life.” But like most literal translations, that isn’t actually the best or most accurate English explanation, as you can see from the above examples. Growing up in the South there was a similar use of the word “pure.” It was common to hear your grandmother say something like: “That’s just but pure bull!” The idea was that it was “nothing but” bull.
I think the most accurate, equivalent translation of pura vida is: Nothing But Life.
Here's a video of Costa Rica viewed almost 60 million times ... only 5 min

So Pura Vida my friends. Stay tuned for more Costa Rica explorations!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS I tried to send you some of the great bird shots I've gotten so far, but either it is my very old laptop or a bad connection. I'll just have to wait to share them with you till I'm home. In the mean time let me tell you a story I learned. There's an investigative reporter from Toronto staying at our B&B. There was a Costa Rican that died there saving a child from a fire. He was the last of over 100 people who had migrated north from this area to have survived. It seems that once the USSR collapsed, there was no longer the need to manipulate coffee prices in order to prevent the spread of socialism, and the price dropped to the point where the farmers couldn't survive. They had no choice but to migrate. The sole survivor made it to Canada only to finally perish there. What happened to the others was a mystery. In the Arizona desert thousands of bodies have been found. Over one thousand have not been identified. Thanks to the work of this investigative reporter interviewing families here in San Vito and collecting some DNA it appears many of the unknown people who died in the desert are these farmers who were only trying to find a means of survival after their livelihood was taken from them by Maxwell House and the like. Even on holiday it is difficult to escape the ravages of capitalism.
Hope you're all doing well, and you have escaped the tragedy of the profit motive. Will try to touch base today if possible. If not, y'all have a great week and I'll see you next Sunday if not before.
Wait I manage to get some photos to upload. Check out these Tanagers!

So there's taste of more to come.

have fun!
We have friends with family there
...but I've never been there myself. Safe travels. I didn't wear a facemask while flying, but did wear disposable gloves and washed my hands several times before and after the trip. Ought to be warm there. It's 80's during the day and 60's at night here in San Vito. Great natural beauty.
Take care my friend!

Good Sunday morning, Lookout ~~
I have family that took a week-long vacation in CR. They really enjoyed it! Hope you get everything out of the experience that you can. I'm looking forward to your insights, pictures, stories, etc. Thanks so much for sharing your vAcA with us!
It's been unseasonably nice here. 60 degrees yesterday. Another beautiful two days and on Tuesday we'll drop 30 degrees and expect snow. Keep in mind, the climate is NOT changing!
Looking forward to getting super bowl food ready for me and the Mr. We'll enjoy the leftovers for a couple of days. I don't have a favorite team, but I have a preference.
Go Chiefs!
Have a beautiful day, folks, and pace yourselves!

Same here ...
75 and sunny yesterday, s'posed to be even warmer today.
I guess the prairie dog came out this morning and had to put on sunscreen so we're getting 4 more days of winter. 50 for a low tonight, then 33 tomorrow night and 29 the night after that.
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
We're living in
"it's anyone's guess" times. We will take advantage of this warmth by getting some things done outside today. What will February bring? March can be a bear. We've had snow in both April and May. Nothing is certain. Just trying to live everyday.
Have a good one, Azazello!

They had a stupidbowl lotto game...
at a local bar/restaurant where we stopped as we walked back to our B&B from the Bot garden yesterday. US football reaches far, and I think they plan to watch it today in the bar there. Hope your team wins!
From what I see cold weather is on the way in another week. Next week looks like it continues to be warm. All the best and have a fun day!

Hey, Lookout ~
when we were in Todos Santos, Baja Sur in June, the local bar televised the women's soccer matches. The Americans came out and we had a whoop-hollerin' time!
Enjoy your travels and experiences this week!

Thanks RA!
We were in Ireland during the Gallic football finals and everyone was in the bars cheering on their fav team. Same sort of spirit you describe.
Have a great day!

Cool pics. Sad to know about the plight of the coffee famers. Sad but consistent the ptb.. Enjoy your trip...

Hey MA
Hope the campaign is going well, and you and yours are hanging in there. We'll know more after Tuesday. I'm sure interested in seeing if they use the same strategies from 2016...moving caucus sites, closing doors early, miscounting, and so on. Wishing Bernie the best.
Noticed Tulsi hit her million dollar donation goal last night. All the best out on the left coast!

We had a little time last night where we looked for something stream. I always appreciate your excellent recommendations. Enjoy the weather while you can!

They made good clothes too
If I can't have American clothes I prefer Central American. Much better than the garbage coming out of Asia.
Great pictures, Lookout! Wish I were there instead of this frozen Hell I was born in.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
When we went to Guatemala...
...back in the mid-80's we bought many clothes and wall hangings. Such beautiful work. So far we haven't done any shopping except for a card or two.
Wish you were here too!

Sounds like a beautiful destination
Enjoy your trip and don't forget to take a few pictures of the food!

food at this first stop has been great
Local chef cooks dinner nightly at this small B&B. Speaks Spanish and Italian but not English. My Spanish is poor at best...survival skills basically. Hadn't thought about photographing it though.
We cooked for ourselves last night...a vegetable chicken soup just to take a break from the carb heavy rich meals. We'll finish that up tonight, and then eat with them on our last night here in San Vito.

How smart of you to change up your menu
By cooking for yourselves. Would also love to see pictures of the produce you buy in the local markets!

Our last stop...
there's a vegetable vender from here who drives down the winding mountain road to the Playa (beach). I'll get some photos for you. the little grocery we went to this week was visually unremarkable and only slightly different. What is different is the Toucan currently calling only feet away from our porch.
Take care and have a good week!

What's the Toucan trying to say to you?

All the best!

Been on it already...
but thanks for your insight. Locals are surprised we've come to the south on our first trip, but we like the path less traveled. So far so good. More later.
Good travels to you my friend!

Costa Rica is cool
Been there twice.
The first time to fulfill a "bucket list" desire to spend a night in the deepest, darkest, most remote rain forest on the planet, the Corcovado National Park.
It is an enormous expanse where even today indigenous people are still living deep in the forest and rarely seen.
Waking up to Howler monkeys is frighteningly awesome.
Have a great time.

We're headed there Tuesday...
Looking forward to the jungle/rainforest experience. Thanks for your insights fellow traveler. This is our first foray here.

If you are spending the night
in San Jose, ex-pats hang out at the Nashville South Bar on Calle 5.
And get used to no street signs or building addresses. You have to ask a local to get anywhere in town.
Really fun though. Everyone is so helpful.
In Hawaii it's "Aloha"
In Mexico it's "Hola"
In Costa Rica it's " Pura Vida" coming and going and they really mean it.
Wonderful people. You are going to have such a good time.

great birds LO
I'll expect to see pix of all the hummingbirds and tanagers! And a Quetzal. I'm the only birder I know that hasn't been there. Have a great one! Don't forget the butterflies.
Safe travels and have fun!

wish you were here
Been trying for the butterfly shots, but they just won't sit still. I've done better with the hummers but they are about as bad.
Here's a speckled tanager I saw this morning. Never knew there were so many. We only have the summer as residents and the scarlet as migrants.
Thanks for the visit!

Have a wonderful trip, lookout, if I think of Costa Rica
I think of OPOL and of my deceased niece, who spent time there, before the passed away. She knew she would die and made sure she could see as many places with natural beauty as possible. She travelled the world. We all should if we can.
Good Night. Tomorrow I go digging. In the garden. It will be good for my emotional health.
ps Thanks for the great photos.

I thought of OPOL too
He came to mind recently when someone asked me about death and burial arrangements. I want to do like OPOL and just be wrapped in a shawl and sent back to the earth. Sound like your niece was a wise woman.
Lots to keep me busy here, but I miss my garden too. Sleep well my friend.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
This couple from Ohio and I met and became pals in
They told me they were headed to Kenya for their first safari in a few weeks!
I gave them some travel tips, since navigating in Kenya is very different than your average bear. Various baggage restrictions, various health concerns.
Just giving them info made me want to go back.
See the world before you die! That is always my advice!
And the terrain, the flora and fauna of Africa is life altering to see.
OPOL loved Costa Rica, but from what he told me, it was dependent upon some guy keeping his word to OPOL's son. The guy didn't. He never expected to leave, but he and his son bailed on the bad deal.
I agree with the idea of returning to the earth. Dust to dust.
I did not have my late husband embalmed. Had him buried in the casket designed for cremation. Basically a carboard/plywood something.
I wanted him to "be" in the growing grass, and the birds that fly.

I hope to return to Scotland one day
Orkney was mind blowing. Want to work my way up (or down) the west coast. September is a great time to go. Never made it to Africa. It is a big world...so many places so little time.
I admire your travel spirit! We also have made friends along the way. Travel opens your mind to new things.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Go to Africa!
After that, THEN go back to Scotland.
Truly, it is all that.
I am very fortunate to go anywhere, and even to be alive.
I had seen everything in the US that interested me, so my world exploration began long ago.
Truthfully, I only know of a dozen places I want to go for the first time, then I will begin to go back to countries in which I got a little taste, go see some more.
I have been to the Amazon maybe 3 times, am looking at a trip on a boat to go places I might have missed. But I have never been to Uzbekistan, so have booked a trip there. Eventually, I will float on the Manatee.
I am also looking at some trips to Mongolia. That just might be awesome!
