The 51st state will be..wait for it..Greenland!!

Our President has decided to offer his buddies, donors and boon companions the mother of all real estate opportunities for plunder. Never mind Puerto Rico, leave those ungrateful folks to their fate, whadaya mean you can't by your own bare hands dig your way out from under a Cat 5 hurricane--lazy bums!!

Greenland has a population of less than 100,000--one unfortunate accident can take out any opposition from them--and huugemongous opportunities for PROFIT!! We can't let the Chinese get there first!!

The BBC has a pretty good summary: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49416740

Greenland is at present an autonomous territory of Denmark and the Danes and Greenlanders both have said Not For Sale, but that's just a negotiating tactic, right? So Our President responded in kind--everyone else in the world assumed to be at his own vulgar level--by cancelling his state visit to Denmark, probably to the relief of the Danes, who can now avoid the expense of security and trying to scrape up a respectable crowd.

Denmark is a small country, so OF COURSE they need the money Our Pres. is going to pretend to offer. Never mind that the Denmark is part of the about 2/3s of the rest of the world which has higher standards of living and better education and health care than we do.

About money, you say, you dippy hippy, Russian bot defeatist you, what does he plan to use for money, seeing as we no longer have any extra of that substance laying around? Who needs money when there are bankruptcy courts? T-Rump the Showman can promise anything he likes, let his successor pay for it.

All of the circumpolar and North Atlantic countries have vital strategic and other interests in the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, such as maintaining sustainable fisheries, and Asian (and other) fishing fleets cannot be allowed to despoil fishing grounds, such as might still remain, but that is another reason why we need alliances with Russia and Scandinavian countries. But alliances are boring, require work and don't win elections. Buy Greenland! That is a Big Idea for America Great Again!!

So, MAGA turns out to be yet another neo-imperialism, rather than a call to rebuild from within.

@thanatokephaloides They just pretended to say no; it was like a negotiating position, don't you see? Just like happens all the time in NYC real estate deals, only bigger. National sovereignty and borders are obsolete now, didn't you get the memo? Except for with Mexico, that's different. I am sure his neo-con buddies were happy to explain to our CinC how he need not concern himself with a few recalcitrant relics of the 20thC.

Besides, T-Rump has an election to win. Thee is untold wealth beneath the ice and each and every one of us nobodies can hope for a trickle down part of the swag.

@thanatokephaloides any kind of genius, and a substantial part of the T-Rump vote was, I remain convinced, an anti war vote, so I'm not the only one fooled. ( I voted Stein, BTW, partly because I think there needs to be a Lorax, speak for the trees party)

Might anyone here have any info on what this is all about and who came up with the brilliant idea in the first place? Do we believe that Orange Julius dreamed it up all on his lonesome?

is not a new idea. It has been a target for expansion for sometime. It would make it easier for American Aristocracy and upper military brass to rule the world.

As much as it might seem out of the blue, U.S. acquisition of Greenland is not at all a strange or irrational idea. Following Denmark's fall to Nazi Germany in 1940, American forces defended Greenland. The roots of American-Greenland comradeship are thus old and formal. In 1946, one Harry S. Truman even attempted to purchase Greenland for $100 million. Was Truman crazy? On the contrary, he was the president who ended a global war and set America on its ultimate course to defeat the Soviet Union.

As for the contemporary utility of purchasing Greenland, it has extraordinary strategic value. Through the U.S. Air Force base already present at Thule, Greenland offers critical intelligence capabilities to conduct satellite operations and to detect possible over-the-North-Pole nuclear missile launches from China or Russia. Thule better allows the U.S. to warn its citizens of an imminent attack.

And it does more than that. Thanks to Thule's deep water port and long runway, the base provides a logistics hub for operations in the Arctic. And it gives the U.S. military the means to deter and defeat prospective aggression. Russia, in particular, has been working to secure territorial control over resource-rich areas of the Arctic. America's presence in Greenland is increasingly relevant for that reason.

Trump simply moves from being given information to good idea to opening mouth or typing on Twitter before anyone can say quite plan is secret.

@studentofearth onto that editorial.

Here is another view of that American-Greenlandic "comradeship":

Benefit for Greenlanders, right. I bet they can't wait for their high paid jobs as hotel maids and janitors. Naturally, they will be eager to leave their pretty, brightly colored houses for USG specially built by the Kushners high rise low income housing developments.

The Economist is very well respected in conventional circles. So the practice of having many unsigned articles doesn’t necessarily discredit a news organization.

@lotlizard WE is an American paper, or rather, miserable excuse for an American paper, and if someone at WE is trying to sell me something I want to know whom the writer is, as in name, background and vital statistics, political affiliation, the works.

Since Time magazine became so infantile and Newsweek imploded, in America The Economist positions itself as the serious newsweekly for grown-ups. So even more than Brits, it’s really the American wealthiest 10%, 1%, and 0.01 % — plus a smattering of those who aren’t wealthy but fancy themselves better educated and intellectually a cut above — who are fine putting up with anonymous influencers.

If the Brits want to put up with anonymous influencers, that is their business

Actually, I agree with you in often liking to know who exactly penned any given screed or piece of claptrap I come across.

He should have kept his mouth shut, but couldn't. Now he has to cancel his trip to Denmark.
This has left a bad taste in the mouths of Danes everywhere.
What a putz.
How 'bout offering the "Left Coast" of California, Jefferson, Oregon, and Washington in a straight across trade?
America would be ridding itself of a bunch of leftists, socialists, and commies who would fit right in with Denmarks Social Democracy.
I could live under the rule of Queen Margrethe II, a benevolent, peaceful, and just monarch.
I would enjoy free healthcare and education. And as a Danish citizen have one of the highest standards of living in the world, not to mention being the happiest population on earth.
Think about it, Donald.
No more left coast always voting against you.
The sanctuary cities problem diappears.
You could create a new Hollywood in your image.
And have all the ice you could ever need.
A win-win-win-win!
Now that's winning.

@HenryAWallace crossed my mind.

What I find so offensive is that alliances and diplomacy with Canada, Russia and the Scandinavian countries are not even being considered.

But diplomacy is boring and besides you have to hire people who know what they are doing, not just some cute girls and sons of guys you did business with.

Here's the foreign policy of the US, 2019:

Meeting with leaders of foreign countries? Ridiculous. Diplomacy is for weaklings. The US of A is exceptional. We're the boss of the universe. What we say, goes. Or else.

If any American (Tulsi Gabbard, for instance, or Jill Stein) meets with a foreign leader, or is even present in the same room as said foreign leader, that makes them ipso facto a traitor to the US, probably working as an agent (or troll, or bot, or something nefarious, anyway) of said foreign country.

If we want something from a foreign country and they're not one of our allies, we bomb the hell out of them and enact regime change. Destroy them by any means possible.

If the foreign country is an ally, we tell them what we want. If they don't immediately jump to comply, we sanction them. If that doesn't work, we declare them an enemy and proceed to enact regime change, bomb the hell out of them, etc.

Life is so much simpler when you don't have to consider what anyone else wants, isn't it?
