I was thinking about the value of an intelligence operation like this in the dawning age of DeepFake technology. On one hand, why go to the problem of securing girls, transporting them across national borders, setting up marks for dodgy sex, just to produce a film or video to be used for blackmail? Now you can just pay a technician to operate a workstation for a couple of hours and produce anything you can imagine, starring your mark. On the other hand, eventually the value of such evidence in court will be zero. The mark can just claim "DeepFake" and get off. The most you can get for your trouble is some bad publicity.
The question I've been pondering is not "why?", but "why now?". Maybe the intelligence agencies want to make use of whatever is in Epstein's safe while it still has some value, and they're shutting down the operation and cleaning up loose ends.

Just a week ago Epstein was either attacked in his cell which he claimed or he attempted to harm himself. I thought I had read that his lawyers were upset that he hadn't been in protective segregation before because of how high profile he was and that they were insisting on it now.
Lots of high profile people were given immunity in 2006 when the first deal was made and the files released yesterday were from a case that has been settled so this might mean the end of any consequences for the people who were named who were probably sweating bullets yesterday when the files were release and breathing a sigh of relief this morning and thanking the Dawg above.
I am very proud of the people here who were more concerned about the victims of Epstein and his pals then they were of scoring points and tying it more to Clinton or Trump. Enough people knew what he and his pals had done and yet they said nothing about it. Trump was the only one who did talk to the authorities about this way back when. Others pulled a Sgt. Schultz.
When they placed him on suicide watch they meant they were going to watch him “suicide”. Yeah...that’s the ticket!

by the same powers that protected Epstein during the first trial. 40 under aged girls accused them of making them perform for their high up friends and Epstein was only charged for prostitution with a 17 year old girl while Ghislaine got off with no charges.
The files that were just released are from 2015 when Ghislaine and Virginia Guiffre settled the case between them. There are more than one investigations into the plea deal IIRC. The federal one that will look at what Acosta did and one in Florida. I think SDNY is involved in one too and it will be interesting to see if any of them go forward now that he's dead. I just find the timing a bit too convenient. First off why was he arrested out of the blue a few months ago? He had to know that everything was being looked at again and yet he just flies back into the country without a care in the world? Then we hear about the sealed files being released after being told a few weeks ago that they wouldn't be? Strange.. and today he's dead. I literally LOL this morning when I saw this. I just said, "of course he is."
Oh well. Webb's next report comes out next week and she has ties to Clinton in it. I'll post it when it does.

she still hasn't even been arrested tells me, too, that the same people are still running things. No matter how powerful they are, this killing is extremely high risk behavior, and they might not be able to continue to keep the whole operation under wraps. It could still blow up in their faces. Ghislaine may be a protected long-term operative, but her usefulness is over. Odds are, she's also facing termination.

a good researcher. She's facing the same limitations in the public record all of us are. I wonder what an experienced reporter at the NYT or WSJ might be able to turn up if the editors weren't taking a "I don't want to go there and really don't want to know" attitude toward this story. By virtually ignoring it for so long, if they actually dug anything up now, it would only make their previous inactivity more obvious. Everybody, including the FBI, has the same incentive to just continue to pretend there's nothing else to see.
Plus, the Feds obviously haven't been completely ignorant of this, but have a stake in protecting their own information gathering operations that have been watching the other watchers, domestic and foreign, for decades. This is one of the largest and most "productive" cooperative international, interagency surveillance and entrapment operations ever.
Nobody wants to be responsible for finally shutting it down and mopping up the mess left behind. That cleanup is just starting and it will be a huge job that nobody is really prepared to carry out. Very messy, and a sure career killer for anyone who touches it.

But here’s my quandary.
If it was so blatantly obvious to everyone, that even cartoons were made of it beforehand and this was 100% predictable, why then was nothing done about it?
We all knew he was a dead man walking outside or inside so surely they must have known it too.
I’m just not getting nor believing any of these budget cuts, overtime, or the bs camera malfunctions.
If we knew it, they surely knew it too.

Because it's in the interests of a whole lot of really uber-rich and hyper-powerful people that Jeffrey Epstein be stone dead.
Either he was left with the means to kill himself and did so, or he was murdered. But you can rely on his being dead, unless someone provides direct, good-quality evidence to the contrary.

On one hand, why go to the problem of securing girls, transporting them across national borders, setting up marks for dodgy sex, just to produce a film or video to be used for blackmail? Now you can just pay a technician to operate a workstation for a couple of hours and produce anything you can imagine, starring your mark. On the other hand, eventually the value of such evidence in court will be zero. The mark can just claim "DeepFake" and get off. The most you can get for your trouble is some bad publicity.
The question I've been pondering is not "why?", but "why now?". Maybe the intelligence agencies want to make use of whatever is in Epstein's safe while it still has some value, and they're shutting down the operation and cleaning up loose ends.

Media putting out conflicting stories about Epstein's death
Just a week ago Epstein was either attacked in his cell which he claimed or he attempted to harm himself. I thought I had read that his lawyers were upset that he hadn't been in protective segregation before because of how high profile he was and that they were insisting on it now.
Lots of high profile people were given immunity in 2006 when the first deal was made and the files released yesterday were from a case that has been settled so this might mean the end of any consequences for the people who were named who were probably sweating bullets yesterday when the files were release and breathing a sigh of relief this morning and thanking the Dawg above.
I am very proud of the people here who were more concerned about the victims of Epstein and his pals then they were of scoring points and tying it more to Clinton or Trump. Enough people knew what he and his pals had done and yet they said nothing about it. Trump was the only one who did talk to the authorities about this way back when. Others pulled a Sgt. Schultz.

Don't forget Ghislaine. She's always been the one
who's been running things while hiding in plain sight behind Epstein. She received immunity as a witness, but could still be charged if the plea deal was found to be improper or she lied under oath. Bet she did. The question is now, will the Feds even go there? Bet they won't.

by the same powers that protected Epstein during the first trial. 40 under aged girls accused them of making them perform for their high up friends and Epstein was only charged for prostitution with a 17 year old girl while Ghislaine got off with no charges.
The files that were just released are from 2015 when Ghislaine and Virginia Guiffre settled the case between them. There are more than one investigations into the plea deal IIRC. The federal one that will look at what Acosta did and one in Florida. I think SDNY is involved in one too and it will be interesting to see if any of them go forward now that he's dead. I just find the timing a bit too convenient. First off why was he arrested out of the blue a few months ago? He had to know that everything was being looked at again and yet he just flies back into the country without a care in the world? Then we hear about the sealed files being released after being told a few weeks ago that they wouldn't be? Strange.. and today he's dead. I literally LOL this morning when I saw this. I just said, "of course he is."

The fact they arranged his "suicide" inside and that
she still hasn't even been arrested tells me, too, that the same people are still running things. No matter how powerful they are, this killing is extremely high risk behavior, and they might not be able to continue to keep the whole operation under wraps. It could still blow up in their faces. Ghislaine may be a protected long-term operative, but her usefulness is over. Odds are, she's also facing termination.

I've read Whitney. She's a good writer and
a good researcher. She's facing the same limitations in the public record all of us are. I wonder what an experienced reporter at the NYT or WSJ might be able to turn up if the editors weren't taking a "I don't want to go there and really don't want to know" attitude toward this story. By virtually ignoring it for so long, if they actually dug anything up now, it would only make their previous inactivity more obvious. Everybody, including the FBI, has the same incentive to just continue to pretend there's nothing else to see.
Plus, the Feds obviously haven't been completely ignorant of this, but have a stake in protecting their own information gathering operations that have been watching the other watchers, domestic and foreign, for decades. This is one of the largest and most "productive" cooperative international, interagency surveillance and entrapment operations ever.
Nobody wants to be responsible for finally shutting it down and mopping up the mess left behind. That cleanup is just starting and it will be a huge job that nobody is really prepared to carry out. Very messy, and a sure career killer for anyone who touches it.

As with 9/11, the tell will be how the establishment responds to this event. If it's a simple suicide, then information will come out about his activities post-mortem, if not in court, then in the press. Do people's hands and lower arms turn jaundice yellow after death by hanging? The apparent bruising or dark areas at left temple region and left ear could be explained away, I suppose, but yellow hands and arms, in complete contrast to color of stomach and face seems odd to me.

Every poster should be cognizant that their favored acronyms are neither universally beloved or even recognized by many readers. The first time an acronym is used, outside of the widely understood ones, should be explained in full before assigning an acronym to them. I keep coming back to your post several times to reread.
Just to make sure that I am reading it and understanding it in the right way.
And as there have been so many recs, I’m hesitant to respond because perhaps it’s me that’s not quite getting it. That I’m willing to concede..
But here’s my quandary.
