The First Thing We Have to Do is Come Out of Our Complacency

Begin the Panic
I'm putting this in its own thread in hopes that a few more people watch it. This is a presentation by a young man named Antonio Reid who is deep into climate awareness. This one is on the topic of sea level rise.
Fast forward to around 5 minutes to start. Or enjoy the view of Antonio's forehead.

May be we need to build an ark like Noah instead of
panicking.

That would be difficult.
Nobody knows what a cubit is anymore.

Math, I used to like it.

Right! What's a cubit?
A cubit, lemme see, I used to know what a cubit was ... well, nevermind about that ...
The earth is a multibillion-year-old sphere.
The Nazis killed millions of Jews.
On 9/11/01 a Boeing 757 (AA77) flew into the Pentagon.
AGCC is happening.
If you cannot accept these facts, I cannot fake an interest in any of your opinions.
So you don't like cubits? Why?
Just because it's old, you won't get into age discrimination of mathematical facts?
Tz, tz, that's a no no. /s

Good job we have a cabin on Mount Ararat
No probs.

We have a cave close to the Haleakala's top. No probs either.

It was 85 degrees at the Arctic pole this week
It's normally only in the 50's this time of year. But instead of people trying to do something about it countries are bickering over who gets access to the stuff below the water.
I'm wondering if the government knows that there hasn't been anything that will slow down climate change, but just don't want to tell us because people might panic and upset what's left of the economy?
Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.
Thanks for the video
I watched most of it. At the end he starts talking about how sea level rise will affect our nuclear facilities so I left off.
The NOAA 2017 extreme scenario spells chaos. 2040 projects a 2.25 meter (~7 ft)sea level sea-level rise. This during a full moon with a storm surge at high tide would mean maybe 20 feet or then there is the article in the guardian today re the glaciers melting. And snoopy just said 95 degrees hot in the Arctic. Boy howdy.

I thought I lived my whole life an environmental activist
Like that poem that ends... "I have wasted my life." Next?
I saw a pop-up thingy near the end of the vid when he says get off your couch, a question like, "wtf and do what?" What are climate talkers telling citizens to do off the couch? Because sheeple need to be told exactly what steps to take, otherwise it is just talking to the proverbial potato with all that gloom portending. Sea level rise is not a good story, what is the opposite of this:
Flying monkeys are too real, c'mon man so are talking cars. So I guess I am already a suspended disbeliever, but I am definitely never going to be a nuclear scientist who knows how to decommission a power plant so the core doesn't melt and kill everything within proximity for a half-life or longer. get real
Sorry that guy made me feel like a useless eater for sure. I am now old and poor and alone and disabled, uninterested in popular culture, bored with flailing decades of duopoly politics, nobody ever listened to me anyway, not even when I had the money. Nobody. heh yeah
Thanks for posting this in an essay, and so what are your thoughts WoodsDweller? Your uid and avatar are hints maybe you are already bunkered somewhere safe and sound, away from the teams of starving caravans, the Invaders.

I couldn't stand listening to that video for long. It's material for a book or a scientific essay. So, I am not ashamed of not listening to it.

I rent, therefore no tree planting allowed. Owners only.
It is May 19th and I am cold, inside my walls... weather the forecast brrr
No I haven't planted any trees lately, and all the homeless shelters are closed because of course. It is not winter. I'm "addicted" to the four sacred things that should never be monetized, because they are sacred things that's why. duh

What an insightful and kind response
thank you so much. Your description of your surroundings come to life. I have never been to that area. I feel through the music you posted. I wished I would get to know you in real life.
What a darn shame you are cold inside your walls. I want to see those walls. It makes me so angry if people have 'shitty walls'. I still don't like to live in wood houses. I need brick walls to feel cozy inside. (Very NOrthern German, once you grew up that way, it doesn't leave you). Seeing poverty and neglect makes me angry. If I could I would like to know your life story. Will you write your life story (even if you never publish or show it to anybody?)
I have been to San Francisco once in my life and I have seen Montecino and the red wood trees nearby for an hour or so. It was a long time ago. In the mid eighties. That is all I know of Northern California. I have seen Los Angeles for two days or so and found it unwelcoming. No way I could get used to it. Somehow I am not attracted to California at all.
And that is of course is mean, bad and completely unjustified and full of ignorance and prejudice. But I can't help it, I like the East Coast. I was quite happy in DC with the city and the landscapes surrounding it. When I came over there to DC from Europe, I called it a little village. Green, small and somewhat provincial. Took me a couple of years to get used to it. Considering my bio, it was a life saver that I lived there and nowhere else in the US. I couldn't have made it somewhere else. So, I survived ... my stupid life ... strangely enough.
I wish you a long life in thick walls that make you feel warm and safe.
We will meet, right? Of course. We will.

My thoughts?
We have the outright deniers, paid or otherwise. We have those who think that climate change is happening, but that it won't amount to much, or it won't happen soon enough to affect them. It isn't real and important like who tweeted what. We have those who think that a little legislative fiddling around the edges, like a carbon tax, is enough. There are those who think we need a little more, the Green New Deal (which would have been a great idea 50 years ago). We've got AOC saying "we've got 12 years left to save the world".
But we don't. The window to save the world closed 30 years ago, or 80 years ago, or 250 years ago, or 3000 years ago. We don't even have 12 years of normal. We might have 12 years when it's still possible to act at all.
I'm so impressed with Antonio. When I was his age I had read Limits to Growth and was planning a life with decline in mind. I thought the end game would be resource depletion, and the answer would be a little Amish farm with some solar. But all the simulation lines went exponential right about now, and the pollution lines will be our end instead. Nowhere to run to, baby, nowhere to hide.
Antonio is entering his adulthood in growing awareness of the situation. He still finds the courage to get out of bed every day and live his life.
In this video he talks about sea level rise, something I generally shrug off. I live on a mesa at 2 km altitude with a deep canyon on each side. Of all the effects a changing climate will inflict on me, rising seas are at the bottom of my list, at least directly.
The projections, undoubtedly underestimating the risk, already show serious impacts to the coasts where most of the population lives and works, and much of our infrastructure lies. Much of not all sea level rise is locked in, regardless of whether we do a Green New Deal or eschew plastic straws. A sane species would be acting today to address two feet of sea level rise in 30 years. Yet we do nothing, not even withhold building permits in areas at risk.
You asked about my situation? I'm old and poor and alone as well. My little patch of woods endures and I've been mostly able to fend off the Earth haters for the time I've been here. I once thought that I would be able to bear witness to the end of things in what comfort was possible, but now I realize I'll be an early casualty. I was right to quit racing with the rats when I did, I've had 25 years of waking up every day and doing what I want. I've spent a lot of time in the backcountry where the non-human world isn't completely gone. In many ways I've become the man I wanted to be. I think there's enough time left for me to accept the end.
