Brexit is pulling into the station

A year ago I wrote "Politically the Tories have no plan at all, and when the clock stops on Brexit they will completely implode."
The clock is beginning to stop.

It's amazing how long conservatives voters, who pretend to distrust politicians, will continue to believe those conservative politicians long after it is obvious that they are lying.
So when the lies can no longer be covered up, conservative voters react with legitimate shock and anger at being deceived. So it is with Brexit.

Theresa May’s decision to delay Brexit has cost her a commanding lead against Labour, according to a new poll.

While the Prime Minister travels to Brussels to ask for another extension, the Tories have plunged 9 points in the latest Kantar poll.

Dropping to 32%, the Conservatives are now three points behind Labour, who stand at 35%

It just keeps getting worse for the Tories.

According to rumour, no fewer than 20 Tory MPs would fancy their chances in a leadership contest. They’d better get a move on. Because if they don’t, there might not be a Tory party left to lead.

Today the Thatcherites and Brexit purists of the Bruges Group held a meeting in Westminster, and anarchy was in the air.

Every mention of Theresa May was met with jeers from the audience. “Traitor!” howled one attendee. “Kick her out!” bawled another. “She’s a European!” roared a third.

Talking to Labour was a step too far for the Tory grassroots.

Grassroots Conservative activists are "quitting in their droves", it has been claimed, as new polling shows that more than 90 per cent disagree with Theresa May's decision to open talks with Jeremy Corbyn.
...Mr Porter said volunteers, members and candidates were quitting, with real fears that he way has been cleared for Mr Corbyn to become Prime Minister.

Just like all Governments, once they've been put into place, the very IDEA of breaking it up is ludicrous! Everybody in Europe and Britain wants things to just continue as they always have, and if you don't clearly you're [Insert Insult du Jour].

Now the people haven't been properly following the script, but don't worry, they'll get plenty more chances to change their mind.

Of course, considering who the Tories represent... this becomes suddenly very appropriate.

What sort of estimate has been conducted of how many seats the Conservatives would lose if the elections were held tomorrow?

That's the acid test, no?

I have long admired that photo. Makes me think... 'when the train left the station...'
But of course it appears it was the arrival that done gone wrong. I bet that was a bone jarring thud. Wonder if the engineer survived.

I really knew Brexit was going to screw things up big time, though not exactly how, just that it was going to cause a clusterf&*!^@*. It seems a hundred times worse than anything I could have imagined. Which is how I suppose some of them see Trumplestiltskin.

I LOL'd at this line.

Also, though...WTF happened to the poor Greens?!? I find it hard to fathom that THEY should be the one other party Conservatives manage to drag down with them.

If the UK leaves Europe, it will tend to act more like the US (see Pickety’s observations about common management styles). I’d take the Brussels bureaucrats and their willingness to fight carbon pollution and American monopolies over that in a hot minute.

Still, if Brexit happens, the next step will be Irish unification after a referendum (40% Sein Finn, 40% Unionist, 20% get this border out of my face...). Scotland will go WTF let us back in, and who know what Wales will do then. Scotland will become a passport mill and we can convert our ratty English passports to shiny Scottish EU ones (my grandfather was born on the Black Isle) and the Queen will flee to Balmoral to join the rest of the sane people.

Dither and make such a mess of things, to discredit the whole idea of Brexit.

The Tory insiders and the UK business elites, from the City of London on down, were always Remainers, after all. The Leavers were Nigel Farage and UKIP. Leavers in the two major parties were originally confined to a backbencher fringe.

Elite power brokers like to portray things so that consulting the ultimate sovereign in a democracy — asking “The People” to vote in a referendum — comes off looking like a mistake. That’s because direct democracy undercuts their whole schtick as the indispensable, wheeling-and-dealing middleman.

The role of “representative” in modern Western “representative democracies” is looking to more and more people like a racket, just a trick people with power and money use to avoid having government do what “The People” actually want.
