Open Thread - 08-01-25 - The Little Things

It's Friday morning. I'm sitting and staring at the keyboard wondering what to write about.
I've already put the bird feeder out on the little slab of concrete, hoping my little friends will jar some inspiration. I do this every morning to thwart the racoon that makes nightly visits to feast on the black sunflower seeds. I put the feeder securely away at night and bring it back out in the morning, it's one of those little things one learns to cope with existing conditions. I think that's one of the secrets of life, learning how to cope with every day problems, how to adjust and make the best of things, especially under adverse conditions.
That's probably even more important in this present day as the world seems like it's trying to invert itself. Life's always had its positive and negative aspects, yin and yang if you will. It's a balancing act that's as old as time. Light and dark, day and night, good and bad. Sometimes those dichotomies tend to flip on themselves. I think civilization may presently be at one of those turning points. There's always been that opposition of states, or countries, or land masses, or whatever, they can be thought of as "good" states and "bad" states. We've always been taught that the West is the "good" state. Maybe so, I guess that depends on one's relative position. But now, it seems like, to me anyway, that the West is devolving into a dark future and what we've been taught as the "bad" states are moving in the opposite direction.
The West for centuries has been touted as a beacon of light that's lead humankind out of the darkness of the Middle Ages and into the brilliance of modern life. Some would argue that point as they look about at what we've become. We've made huge strides in the quality of life since the Enlightenment, physically that is, mentally maybe not so much, although I do have to admit this has to be an improvement from the demon infested psychological norms of the thousand years from the end of the Roman Empire to the brighter days of the late 1600's to the early 1700's.
But, modern life certainly has its drawbacks as well. Just take a look around, notice how detached most people seem to be? I think that may be a natural process that began millennia ago when we disconnected ourselves from Mother Nature. The price we paid for that is self evident in society today as people turn inward toward a life of emptiness and loneliness and away from the things that really matter. The little things. Like a bird feeder.
As we move ever closer to an uncertain future I like to remind myself about the little pleasures in life, remember those? There really is a lot of beauty and kindness out there, if we seek it out. There are forces at work that wish us away from that direction, into a world of hopelessness and despair. To herd us into mental stockades, to bend our wills in their favor. Theirs is a selfish act of greed and avarice, of power and control. We can counter that by not bending to the those forces, to remember what it means to be human, to not lose contact with the goodness within.
It's still there. Detach from the bleakness and embrace the grace and decency, it continues to exist, if you let it.

I had on of those little pleasures in life last night when the youtube algorithms in the right hand column lead me to this band. It's a band of all family members except for the dobro player who is a good friend to the rest of the group.
I think this song, originally done by The Eagles can be thought of as descriptive of what the West has become, especially the United States.

Good morning Free Rangers...
sorry about the rambling this morning. That's what happens when you don't organize your thoughts and your stream of conscious runs away with itself, AND, you don't listen to your mama:
One more just because:
Simple pleasures. I hear you loud and clear, JtC.
Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Shine on, Sister...
Thanks for the rec.
Good morning...
I once had a friend and colleague who said, "Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves." Some truth in that, I think.
I'm just in from taking care of some little things...mowing around the garden, trimming limbs hanging in the road, digging gravel out of one of the roadside ditches so it won't overflow and erode the road, weed eating out front where the power company left a mess, and so on.
Today the heat broke and it is still in the seventies with a cloud cover, so it wasn't a bad day to take care of some chores. Hope y'all are having decent weather too.
I like the Petersens. They often come across my feed.
I like these young folks too...
Long Time Gone cover by Elle Cordova, Toni Lindgren, and Josh Turner
Take care, and have a good Friday. Thanks for the OT!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Same here...
gotta mow the back acres, maybe the office as well.
It's been a bit cooler starting yesterday and extending for a few more days. It will be about 90 today and 87 tomorrow, that's welcome relief from the Texas heat, although I have to say we've had it rather mild so far this year, the hottest I remember so far has been 97, the last few days, knock on wood.
That's a great song by a great little group, maybe there is hope yet.
Thanks, brother.
Then, there's this:

Words to live by...
I just found out an old friend from back in Illinois died a few days ago. The services are tomorrow, there's no way I can make it up there by then.
RIP, Tom.
One of my closest friends,
RIP, Judge.

Good morning Johnny, thanks for the OT. It is good to see
you being mindful of the little things, but also noting, as you observe this sorry sphere we occupy, the regression and devolution of "western civilization", such as it was or has been. After all, you, quite comendably, are the eyes of the world:
Oh, btw Jerome John Garcia August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995
be well and have a good one, as well ad a great weekend

Thanks old buddy...
the devolution of the West is a sight to behold. I'd never dreamed that I would be witnessing it. I guess the old axiom that nothing is constant except change is true after all.
Great song and Happy Birthday, Jerry, and may you rest in peace.
Thanks for stopping by, my brother.
I can't help but feel
a kinship with Sally Bowles, from Cabaret, attempting to pretend that life is still exciting and thrilling, even as the world crumbles outside. I expect to run into crowds of people singing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" everywhere I go, so that I'll know when we're entering the next act.
Well, yesterday was my last full day in the office as I'm being retired, and I just found out that my old boss resigned this morning as well. So tonight, we have tickets to see Josh Johnson doing his standup show up in Denver, and we've decided that we're going to stay overnight in town after our trip to the Kit Kat Club.
Isn't it thrilling? Life goes on.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Have some fun...
some drinks, some laughs with your wife and know you are not alone.
Peace be with you, my friend.
Well, Trump got pissed off
at Medvedev and ordered that two nuclear submarines be moved a little closer to distances that could hit Moscow.
This moves us a little closer to nuclear annihilation.
A little sanity in our government would be welcome.

He has no idea what he's doing
Like a child playing with loaded weapons.
I have recall from a few years back, of Putin specifically saying, that if any military invaded even one inch of Russia's Kaliningrad that he would not rule out a nuclear weapons response, or words to that effect. I never hear any reference to this anymore. Amnesia I guess.
I think I'll watch the Lennon in New York documentary this weekend.
語必忠信 行必正直
i hope the documentary is a good one.
Before he gets us all killed? Melania, you have a son. Don't you want him to grow up?

Ritter nails just how stupid and dangerous this is
語必忠信 行必正直
He's bloviating...
both sides, the US and Russia have subs deployed off shore in the respective countries, all the time, and he knows that. They're always within striking range.
Both sides are sabre rattling.
Well, Putin is not impulsive,
I am beginning to think Trump is overcompensating for some short-coming.

That's a pretty big ask given its composition.
