Our Future Lies with Our Youth
~

Villasenor has been part of the youth-led strike for months and endured a sit-in as a polar vortex brought bone-chilling cold to the Big Apple.

She and others are calling for a world wide climate strike...

#SCHOOLSHUTDOWN
#ClimateStrike
in AMERICA

Friday March 15 2019

.

A sea of students are taking part in climate strikes around the world, and on March 15, young activists in the U.S. will add their voices to the escalating #FridaysForFuture movement. … Now, kids, teens and young adults in the U.S. will take their own action with support from environmental groups such 350.org, Extinction Rebellion and the Sunrise Movement

.

Villaseñor and Hirsi are part of a three-person power team co-leading the first United States–wide #SchoolStrike4Climate, as the hashtag has come to define it, a movement inspired by 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg, who has been on strike outside of the Swedish parliament building every Friday since September.

.

.

“I am asking youth all over the country to think about what their future looks like under climate change by writing stories and making artwork. In school, youth are taught how to live in a world that won’t exist due to climate change. We aren’t being taught the truth.

.
The children will not be deterred. Their confrontation with Dianne Feinstein went viral…

Most recently, California senator Dianne Feinstein, 85, scolded a group of middle-schoolers with the group Youth v Apocalypse, who had joined the Sunrise Movement to call on Feinstein to back a resolution in the Senate supporting a Green New Deal. In a now infamous exchange, Feinstein barked that “I know what I’m doing” and that she has “been doing this for 30 years”, so they better just bugger off and let the adults work.

Countdown to Calving at Brunt Ice Shelf
NASA 2-23-19

Cracks growing across Antarctica’s Brunt Ice Shelf are poised to release an iceberg with an area about twice the size of New York City. It is not yet clear how the remaining ice shelf will respond following the break, posing an uncertain future for scientific infrastructure and a human presence on the shelf that was first established in 1955.

Alberta’s Oil Production Cut Shows the Keystone XL Protest Worked
Desmog 2-13-19

The oil would simply find another way to the market, the argument went, leading New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait, for example, to declare “The Keystone Fight is a Huge Environmentalist Mistake.” Well, perhaps not.

“Historic Price Crash Plunges Canadian Oil Patch into Crisis,” Bloomberg reported in November 2018: “Heavy Canadian crude has been on a downward spiral since mid-May, with prices plummeting by more than 60 percent as an onslaught of new production from the oil-sands overwhelms the nation’s pipelines.”

Concrete: the most destructive material on Earth
The Guardian 2-15-19

After water, concrete is the most widely used substance on Earth. If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest carbon dioxide emitter in the world with up to 2.8bn tonnes, surpassed only by China and the US. … If developing countries expand their infrastructure to current average global levels, the construction sector will emit 470 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide by 2050, according to the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.

Environmental impact of concrete
Wikipedia

The cement industry is one of two largest producers of carbon dioxide (CO2), creating up to 5% of worldwide man-made emissions of this gas, of which 50% is from the chemical process and 40% from burning fuel. … One reason why the carbon emissions are so high is because cement has to be heated to very high temperatures in order for Portland Cement noudules to form.

Concrete is tipping us into climate catastrophe. It's payback time
The Guardian 2-15-19

So great is its carbon footprint that unless it is transformed and made to adopt cleaner practices, the industry could, on its own, jeopardise the whole 2015 Paris agreement … This is wishful-thinking. The great bulk of the industry is inherently conservative, ignorant of the alternatives to cement and reluctant to adopt change.

I am soooo impressed.

Climate change--a Republican term, I think, for global warming, is science, but it ain't rocket science.

Step One. Find photos a hundred years old or more, showing the tops of the world's highest mountains, including those located in the areas of the world that have been industrialized longest and those in areas of the world that lagged in industrializing. Perhaps you can find such photos online or in a very old book.

Dear reader, I bet even the least scientific among us, as I am, can guess steps 2 and 3, but I will not burden you to guess.

Step Two. Find the most recent photos you can find that show the tops of the same mountains identified in Step One. Try for photos taken around the same time of year as the photos described in Step One.

Step Three. Compare the photos described in Step One with the photos described in Step Two.

Et, voilà!

If you care to got further, this may be the most difficult step: Convince your denier friends that none of the photos have been retouched.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v-JgBSfzkM]

In the Department of TMI: I encounter too many marvelous people for the first time after their respective passings. Assuming I had "quite a lot," I would give quite a lot to spend an evening with Cole Porter in his prime. It wouldn't have to be any kind of special evening. In fact, I'd prefer knowing what a very ordinary evening for Cole Porter was like.

I cannot, nor do I want to, avoid listening to old music, watching old films or their remakes, seeing or reading about revivals of early Broadway shows, reading books by already deceased authors, especially humorists. And then, there's the net, including youtube. However, starting to hero worship people like the magical Cole Porter, as portrayed by the often-impersonated, but inimitable Cary Grant or sung by the amazing Ella Fitzgerald or heart-wrenching Billie Holiday after all four have passed sometimes can be unbearably poignant. I have that kind of experience too often. Sigh.

@magiamma

the term "climate change." None was intended, as I am all but sure you know from my frequent compliments of your open threads. But, just in case...

"Climate change" is now the accepted and instantly recognizable term for the subject. I meant only to throw out some history. I think the change from "global warming" to "climate change" was one of those linguistic changes suggested by Frank Luntz or someone else in Luntz's field at the behest of the right. If I had to guess, I's guess Gingrich because he seems to have been the most focused on "languaging" at that time.

Your reply did, I think, implicitly point out the reason for the substitution: "Global warming" is specific, suggesting on ongoing process via use of the gerund, and conjures images of people being too warm and/or getting warmer warmer. Just meditating on the term "global warming" for more than a few seconds might cause a guy to remove his jacket, loosen his tie, open the top two buttons of his shirt and roll up his shirtsleeves.

On the other hand, standing on its own, the term "climate change" doesn't convey much. Weather changes all the time. And nothing says a change can't be for the better

At this point, however, the terms are not new and everyone understands that "climate change" is not referring to something neutral or positive. Additionally, the expected changes are not limited to warming. So, today, the term "climate change," IMO, conveys a more accurate concept than would "global warming." However, the reverse was probably true in the seventies or eighties. Back then, "climate change" may not have conjured up much of anything in the minds of most people outside of the political and scientific communities.

I like your terms, too, especially "climate catastrophe." However, it's probably too late to introduce a new term (or resurrect old one) as the name of the phenomenon.I think we are pretty much wedded to "climate change" now, for better or worse (as it were).

Quick backatcha...

It’s a pet peeve of mine too but the meme now is climate change not global warming. I saw an article late yesterday on that very subject. Will post it when I can.

Pretty sure it was bush the lesser that made that change at the government level and the rest is history. Pissed me off at the time. Hot house earth is the term used in a lot of studies. It denotes a radical shift in temperature. I feel that is more realistic bc once temperatures get to around ~2.5 C iirc they jump state to say 5 or 6, to an untenable state for life as we know it. Not clear on the figures but there is definitive data. Some say the cap is 1.5 C.

And ended up watching the Korean film "Train To Busan" which is a zombie movie set in Korea.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyWuHv2-Abk]

Really, REALLY good. I thought there was nothing the Zombie Genre could throw at me that I hadn't seen a hundred times before, but the responsibility of fatherhood and looking out for your community was not something I expected to see in a film these days.

With only a few scenes the film managed to show the difference between what Americans think of as success (Material wealth and looking out for Number One) versus what actually is important for a child (Attention and Caring). While it is just a standard zombie movie, it's emotional impact is far beyond that, at least for me.

It's been a long time since a film nearly moved me to tears, and this one pulled it off. Kudos to the filmmakers. I'm finding I'm enjoying reading subtitles these days, because I can't stand much else that's made. Too many obvious narratives being pushed that I don't agree with. Actually had to turn off "Incredibles 2" halfway through because of the treatment of stay at home fathers. Was actually insulting to me.

throw at me that I hadn't seen a hundred times before"

I don't partake of that genre. As basically a know nothing on that score, I hesitate to jump in with my comment. However, when I heard of Zombie Abe Lincoln, I almost changed my viewing habits. If it gets to TV, I probably will watch that one. Not because it's quasi-political, but because I developed a huge crush on Lincoln in elementary school and my youthful crushes never die.

Btw, I am very touched by a zombie film moving you to tears.

collection. For decades now I have seen articles on some new plan, proposal or project to produce reduced CO2 cement. One of them even involved an actual productin facility on the nor-cal coast. Yet, nothing has ever come of any of there as far as I can tell. In 2014 even Forbes was talking up new green cement, but in mid 2018, cement producers were still working towards developing a plan (July 9, 2018, https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/cement-producers-are-developi...

The World Cement Association recently held its first-ever global climate change forum, where industry leaders and scientists discussed strategies to reduce the industry's carbon footprint. It will help inform the development of a climate action plan, which the WCA intends to release in September, aimed at outlining pathways for low-carbon cement production.

Yet, some of it is already out there. US concrete has been making it since 2009. Webpage:https://www.us-concrete.com/ef-technology.

U.S. Concrete is the first national concrete company to formalize a company-wide commitment to green building through its EF Technology, environmentally friendly concrete mixes. Since 2009, U.S. Concrete has saved over 1 million tons of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere through the use of its EF Technology.

Of coursse, one of its 2 products is based on fly ash, which, with any luck, we will stop producing entirely, but, given the system, probably not any time relatively soon.
So what is the roadblock, beyond simple capitalism?

Have a good one.

Tiana Jacout has commented, "We have tried marching, and lobbying, and signing petitions. Nothing has brought about the change that is needed"
Tell the climate deniers/obstructionists/rich bitches they are leaving their own offspring to your mercy. They won't live forever and you will be leading the governments of the world soon enough.
Maybe that will jar them to attention.
Just mention "The Romanov Solution".

Yeah take the damn gloves off. I think a lot of folks are reaching that same conclusion. Not time for politics as usual. That’s really worked. How bad does it have to get. The energy is building for sure. Anxious to see what march 15 brings. Thanks for your thoughts. Have a good one...

Thanks for all the work work Magi. It is a great roundup. Meanwhile Drumpf has assembled what seems to me to be a climate change denial committee. To steer us through it.

Regarding Iceland's whaling... Those Fin Whale are amazing animals. They are second in size only barely to Blue Whale. But they are much much faster. More survived where Blues did not because they could outswim the boats in the early days. I think it is 24 mph or
so. They can haul donkey. When I led trips asea for L.A. Audubon Soc. we saw them annually offshore of socal. Only in a high speed cat could we consider chasing after one. Once we were out in 15-20' swells about 50 miles offshore, big slow rollers with a nice long interval, a wonderful ride. A Fin Whale passed us body surfing in the swells! We could see its head and front of the body just under the surface at the base and up the face of these huge swells, and sticking out in the air on the backside of the swell was the last 10' and fluke of the Fin Whale. So it was steering with fins only. They say Fin Whale is the only large whale fast enough to do this, to catch the wave and then ride it at leisure. It was like a scene from Fantasia it was so off-the-wall. But like a Blue, they are hard to photo because only 20', a quarter, of the animal is out of the water at any time. Fins have a big dorsal, Blue Whale has a little thumb for a dorsal fin. Here is a poor pic...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Fin Whales sound like truly amazing beings. Imagine surfing like that with fins only. What freedom. And how wonderful to witness that. This is why I do this. We are still here. May there be way to steer a course to safety. That is my hope. Thanks for the picture.

She says it all in a clear concise manner.

Thanks for your OT and all of your essays. Had a chance to read this one on the same day. Oops . . . guess it is Friday now.

Greta cuts through the bullshit.

I was hoping to plant out my Siberian Tomatoes on March 1, but probably should wait until next week's cold front is over. Supposed to be in the low 20s here. Yikes!

All the best to everyone!
