Saturday Open Thread - 3/7/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I sincerely hope this morning finds you all safe, sound, and in fine fettle.
"We are in for a ride!" is the theme of my next two topics.
First, I took a 30 free continuing legal education course between client interviews on Thursday. It was about an aspect of law greatly changed by AI. These presentation are typically cringe worthy, but this one changed my customary views of travel drastically. I will point out the laws apply to Texas, but several aspect apply to the US.
Lyft and Uber. Who hasn't hired one? Ok. Uber is the Big Boy, but Lyft is identical except smaller. They operate Identically, they are the monopoly. They sent lobbyists to Austin, wrote some legislation, got it passed, campaign funds grew. Background checks on drivers are not conducted now. Fingerprints are not required of drivers now. Thousands of Texas men and women have been raped or victims of lesser sexual assaults by drivers. Prosecute, fine. Sue ? Forget it. The monopoly(s) are network transportation providers only. Their drivers are contract laborers. No point in suing them. Whereas they began as a cheaper choice than government regulated taxi services, taxis no longer exist, the the monopoly prices are now much higher that taxis ever were.
Second, AI auto trucking. Driverless 18 wheelers are on the highways now. Any big truck you see on the road has some person behind the wheel, but they are not necessarily driving. Drivers were paid well, insured, had various benefits, so they went to the unemployment lines.
The AI program is configured to put the in truck person's safety above everything else. So, the program identifies a stalled vehicle. Smash it or dodge it? Dodging it requires running up onto a sidewalk where a young mother is pushing her twins in a stroller.
In truck person is unscathed, the truck is unscathed, the woman and twins are torn into so many pieces they couldn't be recovered, except for a few bits and pieces.
Can you sue? Yes. However, expect the lawsuit to be thrown out. AI cannot be a party.
So, re-think Uber and Lyft, and re-think how you position yourself around big trucks. We did ok without driverless autos. We were capable.
So, inflation, anyone? My office insurance increased from $1800 per year in 2025 to $2900 this year. The big 33.7 oz can of coffee I bought 3 weeks ago was $18.24, but yesterday, $22.24. 3 weeks ago, my packet of taco spice was 79 cents, yesterday, 98 cents. We are stocking up on basic necessities, bracing for a predicted economic crash. Getting ready used to be fun.
Well, I have litigated "who's the Daddy" paternity cases, but I wouldn't take this case:

Well, I must say, the world is changing faster than we expected. So far, not for the better, but it ain't over 'til its' over.
This is an open thread, not limited to any topic. In fact, it's purpose is to be a thread for you bring to your friends here any info you think is worth sharing.
So, let 'er rip!

Once again, good morning, good people!
Trump says gas price increases do not concern him.
"Let the eat cake!" in no uncertain terms. The US rationed gas during WWII. One was given or bought a ticket allowing them so many miles of driving. Mom hitched a ride from Baytown to San Antonio to visit Dad on the Army base hospital. She gave up points to the driver, rode with 5 or 6 strangers, and anyone being let out on the way was replaced with another stranger.
Fighter jets need our gas, after all...
My spirits would lift if I only had a puppy.
Your turn, friends!

Good morning...
Inflation is indeed real. Just done at the grocery and things are up a fair amount since last week. Gas has gone from $2.6 to $3+ in a week.
And as to rides how about new cars complete with hackable kill switches and auto driving features. Yes, we are in a brave new world...one we need to face bravely at any rate. The forever war reminds me of 1984 and the two minutes of hate.
― George Orwell
Thanks for the OT and everyone have a good weekend!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning, Lo!
My 2023 Hyundai has a feature to steer me if I am drifting outside mt lane. Trying to dodge a puddle or animal on the road would cause a tug of war between me and the steering wheel. We cut that program off after a few days. I have ranted about kill switches before, and iirc, all vehicles will have them as of this year and going forward. I do not believe the feature can be cut off.
How many people would be able to shut off a car engine? The manufacturer, all police agencies, the seller, the finance company? Do they ever release control or do they retain it for the life of the vehicle?
Government measures inflation in a way that conveniently skips consumer costs of basic necessities. I bought a bottle of Anacin Friday and paid twice the cost of the bottle I bought 6 months ago. Toothpaste is nearing luxury price.
Israel is banning all videos and all communications from the country that reveal what is going on there. We have to rely on other countries to report what buildings are being bombed. If Bibi thought it was safe to go home, he would leave Germany. What a coward.
Well, we are getting some much needed rain this afternoon. Time to plant some grass. Life goes on, dear friend. Enjoy your weekend!

Hey, good morning
.
Happy Saturday FWIW. Have yet to do any Uber transportation. My Ranger works quite well
to accomplish local objectives. But the thought of driverless 18 wheelers is quite frightening.
Who hasn't felt the potential destruction of a big rig flying-by on a delivery mission? Sucking-up
pressure and space leaving turbulence it their wake. Have left the interstate transit routes behind.
Call me old fashioned ..
Someplace near Belgrade Maine. Think it will start?
Thanks for the O&E.

Good afternoon, Cap'n!
My local store is running a weekend sale on large packages of ground round. We can save about $5 on 4 lbs. May as well stock up on it.
I have a neighbor who has a vehicle much like the one in your picture. Mint condition, and he goes on joy rides on nice weather days. I remembA computer driving me?
er when computers on cars were helpful, such as the sensors indicating low tires, oil pressure, engine temperatures, etc...It is handy to know how many miles I can drive before I need to refuel. But now?
I have to use the interstates occasionally. I could drive 3 1/2 hrs to Galveston on the back roads, or get there in 1 1/2 hrs using the interstates. Not every small town has a convenience store and bathrooms. I had no idea driverless big rigs were on the roads and would not have known without taking that cle course. How do they know when a computer program gets hinky or hacked? After the wreck?
Each day I hate AI more than the previous day.
Cap'n, cook a fun recipe and play the piano, and have a great weekend!

AI/military/Iran
Speaking of AI, Scott Ritter in this video is disgusted about its use in our military. Don’t recall latest opinions of him on this site. But I was captivated by what he’s saying so watched the whole two hours. He claims with certainty that Iran has already won the war. There will be no more American presence in the Mideast and Israel will be gone. What would life be like in this country without Israel running it, I wonder.

I have read that our AI Claude is wrong a 33% of the time. Who is dumber...Claude or the humans that utilize Claude? Well, only humans get court-martialed.
Thanks for the video link. Lots of us will watch and learn, chica!

Good morning otc. An hour or more ago, just as I was
grtting ready to head to farmers' market I saved a comment only to be told that the site could not be reached, further attempts told me that it was insecure. I return and here it is without my comment or your comment that I recall have been posted, so, is this real?
Tipper Gore redux: There are now some 12 "child safety" bills in the house which will destroy everybody's privacy and anonymity on the new, and at least one of which will operate at t e system level, possibly requiring "age verification" for just about every damn action (if using terminal mode in linux). As far too ofter the war cry of "save the children" is being used to strip rights from all adults in the name of "protecting" or youth from exposure to anything that Cotton Mather would've found objectionable. Truth be told, the 21st century US blue nosed censors would probably consider Cotton Mather to be some sort of radically permissive free thinker. One such piece of crap has already been enacted in California.

Since I've been out and about all morning, I know what new idiocy may have come down the pike, whether we've invaded Cuba yet, or how goes the current wars, both economic and military.
be well and have a good one
fingers crossed ---
well, it looks like comments came back and this posted ok
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Hey, el!
Glad the comment magically re-appeared!
I have been reading about ID requirements to go online were coming our way. Protecting kids is the perfect cover, I'd say. It will make the coming antisemitism criminal statutes easier to enforce. It is weird to think of political leaders being able to know who doesn't vote for them. What might they do to the opposition? hmmm...
FWIW, this site and one other blog I skim a lot both were inaccessible for 3 or 4 minutes yesterday at more or less the same time. Both essentially non-MAGA.
Leavitt has an amazing talent for hogwash, doesn't she? Such an earnest voice and facial expression. Trump couldn't have found a better spokesperson.
I am awaiting the arrival of rain and a temperature drop. I don't need to turn on the a/c today. I can spend that savings on something edible.
The US used to have a problem with deliberately starving populations, but since Gaza and now, Cuba, I guess it is ok. When we can't afford groceries here, I am positive the government will step right in to help us. /s

Hey, cass!
I should have the time this afternoon to watch the vid. I like that guy, too! I just read a comment by karlof1. Fuel is over $5 per gal. in California. It could go up to $10 by the end of the month all over the US.
I am glad I am only 2 miles from my office!
And to harp just a bit more, we claim to have hit that girl's school inadvertently due to an AI error.
Notice Israel hasn't used that excuse for bombing schools, hospitals, and farmers?
Keep us posted on any news or commentary you find today, friend.

Good Afternoon
from dystopia. I guess we'll find out how big a cult the Maggats have. Sending billions in foreign aid and the UN drove them nuts. So now we're sending even more $$$ in the form of missiles and bombs. How is that better?
Hey, snode!
MAGAS are breaking away after they fill up their gas tanks and buy food for their kids.
I would hazard to say most MAGAS are not Zionists and do not give one flying damn about Israel.
I will give The Gateway Pundit a look. I am interested to see the comments.
I read yesterday that Saudi imported 85% of it's food. Much of it is delivered through the Strait of Hormuz. It doesn't pay to be pals with Israel or the US.
Let us know if you run across any news, friend. Let's make it through the weekend.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
I concur about MAGA attitudes
....about the wars and the attack on Iran. They are objecting as much as they can. They were never warned to expect it, and they are already feeling the pain that's going to wash over the US population, But most say nothing.
Dividing the people politically broke the American people. It isolated and weakened them so they can never unite. People on the right would rather be choked by the betrayal of Trump and have their faces rubbed in broken promises — than agree with the "far left", who also deplore the US war depravity.
The people will not come together. They never have. And the national government cannot be reformed without unity. It's even worse when the Dems are in the majority. The betrayal by the Dems over moral values that really matter are even more viscious and craven. And the shocking religious insanity in the US, over the "messiah coming," damages the people's minds in a deep, nasty way.
This Iran war (and Venezuela, too, come with severe consequences, compared to the 20 year War on Terror. It's so clear to the world — the entire world — that the US has learned nothing, and is now destroying itself. I don't think the people can be saved.
I just read that 2025 was the first year ever that more people left the US than arrived. The deportations were just part of the story. There was also a mass migration of Americans and their families who expatriated. That's not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot effort and determination to pull it off.
I would have thouht there were
a lot of flights from India to London. Hmmm...

Hey, PR!
he uniparty goes to great lengths to keep us folks at each other's throats. The pols get donations, stick together when it is time to vote. Reaching across the aisle was made a cool move by Clinton. He really was appropriately called Slick Willie.
Are US citizens leaving, or immigrants? Seems many countries are under the influence of the US, there are just few places to go for a better life. I would rather deal with the crooked bastards here, where I still have a few rights, than deal with them while living in a foreign country without those few rights.
I did read that 6 or 7 more European countries have said the US will not be permitted to use their military bases located in those countries to fight this war.It is just gonna get worse until it gets better, friend.
Enjoy your weekend!

Interesting!
Wish they would name those social democracies. For example, the first time I visited Ecuador, it was a classic SD. The second time I visited, it had gone neocon. Totally different economic system that favored the rich, employed austerity for the non-rich. Argentina had just flipped to neocon when I visited.
Uh...I have previously mention I identified as a Texan when traveling. More fun to discuss the Alamo than Kosovo!

human shield is a proven Israeli tactic.
Thanks, humphrey!
Humphrey, who knew we would spend our weekend watching missiles and bombs killing people? I am reading MoA's Iran war thread, and one commenter claims that Israel has announced their radar systems are down and early warning sirens will be insufficient to get people to safety.
I bet the bunkers are full. Bibi remains safe in Germany.
Desalination plants have been hit and potable water in Israel might soon get scarce. What did they think would happen when they bombed the huge desalination plant in Iran?
Our MSM is uniformly reporting Iran is near surrendering. I refuse to read their news and read headlines, only.

Daughter's boyfriend's parents stuck in India
I think they were flying a UAE airline with a change in .... Dubai, which was hit with drones this morning. They hardly speak English, and have to call here to get the son to translate. Lots of hold time getting in touch with airlines transiting the UAE. From the other side of Bangladesh most flights end up going over the Pacific, bad luck over the mideast, europe, 2/3 of the US.
First bit of snow in 2 months Friday.
Zelinski advising Gulf states on how to foil drones. Looking for a Gulf State/USA anti Soviet alliance no doubt. Speaking of which losing Starlink seems to have coincided with less upbeat news, still no Crimea.

I thought the airport in Dubai had been closed for a couple of days. Poor family getting stranded there. It might be pretty tricky getting out.
So now, Zelinski is a military expert? Good grief.
