First, a thank you and a hat tip to Lookout, who brought up Mr. Nixon in a comment to my Rosa Parks Day Open Thread.
I've done a ton of these date based OTs and browsed through tons of lists of events, births and deaths. They memorialize damn near everybody, minor royalty of every ilk, and those who marry into it, athletes and practitioners of sports like golf, bowling and croquet, soldiers of every rank of every nation, artists, authors and musicians of every conceivable level of prominence and talent, but, for today, no mention of Mr. Edgar Daniel (E.D.) Nixon. I know, because, thanks to Lookout, I was looking for him. Ever heard of him?
A relatively unsung civil rights leader in Montgomery Alabama, Mr. Nixon played a major role in the Montgomery bus boycott. He put up his house for collateral to bail out Rosa Parks. He arranged for Clifford Durr, a white attorney, to represent her. He called a bunch of local ministers to drum up support for a boycott, including Martin Luther King Jr., who had recently moved to Montgomery from Atlanta. He was instrumental in forming the Montgomery Improvement Association to carry out the boycott and in working with Ralph Abernathy to draw up a list of demands to present to the bus company. So, did anybody of note die on this day in 1987? Well, according to Wikipedia, for example, somebody in fact did, James Coco, an American actor and comedian. You have absolutely got to be shitting me!

Cliff Durr and his wife Virginia were my political mentors. Cliff wanted to be a farmer but when he went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, they didn't offer Agricultural science (at least that was his line to me). Rosa was their seamstress and friend. They felt a black lawyer would be better for Rosa's case, so he assisted Mr. Fred Gray, who was the lead attorney.
Cliff (who served on the FCC) is also the reason we have public broadcasting, however he would be sorely disappointed in the corporate vehicle it has become. After his death, I spent a year living with Virginia and taking care of their small farm. It was one of the richest years of my life, and was how I became a socialist in my youth.

watched the dahr/hedges video. good. think dahr missed a couple of points but maybe they are in his book and hard to think of everything when being interviewed. being picky. I just watched this one (link below) from beckwith. he unpacks a study on Greenland sea ice melt and rapid rise in temperature. The study is from ice cores and shows a 16 C rise in temperature in 10 years after sea ice is melted. right? so basically once the sea ice is gone hold on to your socks.

It was my good fortune to spend time with the Durrs. Many people visited...Jessica Mitford, Studs Terkel, journalists to numerous to name,,,as well as locals like Henrietta Boggs. RFK jr was in Alabama and came around at the time too. That experience was a real education.

Snowing again in Oregon
Have lost count of how many times it has snowed this February. Too many.
I hope some of you are getting sunny, dry weather.
Good morning, Granma. No snow here, though we did get it
at elevations for a day or two. I can, however, say pretty much the same a you with respect to rain. We've had a brief sun break of a couple or three days, and it is supposed to end later today. actually, we had a few moments of ultra light rain yesterday already. We do need the rain, but so much so steadily is causing problems all around the state. And weird snow patterns. A few days ago my sister reported upper elevation snowfall in east county San Diego.

Good morning, RA. Glad you like the long date. I no longer
recall them, but there are a lot of well known and not too well known astronomical cycles such as the Metonic cycle that the mayans either did or could've tracked with their system. The Metonic is 235 lunar months which is how long it takes for a specific lunar phase to be exactly in sync with a specific position in the solar year. solar year. The saros cycle, which predicts eclipses is another. What I do recall is that there was an article somewhere, some time ago, tht highlighted how some of these more complicated multi-body astronomical cycles were seemingly enmeshed in the long count and its expansion.
I too think it would be a kick to use the long count for everything.

Thanks for the tunes EL. I could spend all day listening to and watching Paco vids, he was an astounding amazing player. Great Velvet Underground tune... I always thought later there were touches of it in both Sweet Jane, and Rock & Roll. It seems almost a precursor to them. I quite liked George's 'Brainwashed', it was as usual his spot-on perceptive George.
