Extra sad news...
Submitted by joe shikspack on Mon, 02/18/2019 - 12:05pm
On Saturday, our friend divineorder suddenly collapsed and passed away while bicycling and birding in Costa Rica with his wife jakkalbessie. Jakkalbessie is now sorting out a variety of details and preparing to return home. She has help from both some local friends and family who can join her if needed.
Divineorder travelled widely, enjoying and photographing nature and shared his adventures with us, checking in from all over the world. When home in the States, he was always active in promoting issues and activism. His optimism and drive to make change will be remembered.

That is very sad news
I'm so sorry to hear that. Please let us know if we can do anything to support his family.

he had a divine relation to his surroundings, be it nature or people. RIP, good Sir and my condolences to his wife. You will be missed a lot.

I did too, mimi.
He and Jakkalbessie were on a constant adventure in life; it was inspiring. I hope Jakkalbessie will continue to visit with us. She has a place here, always.
Thanks joe...
Many of us here were active participants at joe's The Evening Blues at DKos back several years before this site went live, divineorder along with his wife Jakkalbessie were among that group. We have been good online friends for many years.
As joe mentioned divineorder was an activist and writer, he loved nature and gifted us with many of his excellent photos from his and Jakkalbessie's many adventures. He was most concerned about climate change and wrote about that often. He leaves a hole in this site and my heart. I will miss him dearly.
Jakkalbessie, my friend, our friend, be strong and if there's anything we can do please let us know. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Great photographers those two, loved the travels they shared here too. Shocking sad news indeed.{jakkalbessie}

peace be the journey
Exactly as they lived together
Made me tear up.
They have friends they met in their travels, who co-found an org that helps African girls stay in school the whole month. She mentioned them. I asked about the org; he posted background with a link.
Unless she asks that we do otherwise, I will donate in his name (with a little background in case they don't know his handle).
Here's her comment, and his follows, in case anyone else is interested.

In addition to C99P, DO was a big fan of Meteor Blades & OPOL...

So simply expressive
Thanks for that bobswern.
The OPOL diary brought back fond memories
322 recs and 800 plus comments kinda gives you an idea for how that went over. The thing that I'll never miss is the echo chamber of back and forth of bickering comments. I saw a lot of names that have gone missing since the ides of get the hell out of here if you can't say something nice about Her even if you have to lie about Her.
Now don't that sum up daily kos?
Thanks for the links to those diaries, bob. divineorder also went there to discuss Russia with his focus on how it could lead to war. He still got called names.
Heartbreaking news.
Like most here, I never met him in person but liked him and thought he was a very positive and caring person. He always had a way with me personally, don't know what it was, like the sensible big brother talking down his rambunctious little brother but encouraging him to run free always. I wish we could have met in person. I liked to call him d.o., with periods.
My thots are with jakkalbessie, we all know this is very hard for her. May she find the strength to carry on. If there's anything we can do jakkalbessie, please let us know. So very sorry for your loss.
Rest in peace d.o. Brother.
You two really did have a mindful rapport, al.
I would enjoy reading your respectful back and forth on the various issues under discussion. It was healing in a way. You two would hold firm on your opposing views, but they somehow ended up looking like complementary views, instead, in a complex system where there was room for both. divineorder was good at bringing order out of chaos.

He and I were often on opposite sides of the divide
I can do no better than to quote Edward R. Murrow in this context:
The Senator charged that Professor Harold Laski, a British scholar and politician, dedicated the book to me. That's true. He is dead. He was a socialist -- I am not. He was one of those civilized individuals who did not insist upon agreement with his political principles as a pre-condition for conversation or friendship.

Reposting My Comment About Professor Harold Laski
I learned a great deal about Harold Laski when I was a grad student in London in the mid-1990s. A giant of a man who always supported the underdog, his contributions are legendary. Below is a comment I posted in an essay last year by Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal.
We should always, always celebrate decency and lives well-lived.

Sad indeed
DevineOrder will be deeply missed at this place.
Oh no!
Very sad news. I will miss his presence here.
Jakkalbessie, my message box is always open. (That goes for everyone here too.)
This shit is bananas.
for jakkalbessie when she comes by:
White Owl Flies Into and Out of the Field
Coming down out of the freezing sky
with its depths of light,
like an angel, or a Buddha with wings,
it was beautiful, and accurate,
striking the snow and whatever was there
with a force that left the imprint
of the tips of its wings — five feet apart —
and the grabbing thrust of its feet,
and the indentation of what had been running
through the white valleys of the snow —
and then it rose, gracefully,
and flew back to the frozen marshes
to lurk there, like a little lighthouse,
in the blue shadows —
so I thought:
maybe death isn’t darkness, after all,
but so much light wrapping itself around us —
as soft as feathers —
that we are instantly weary of looking, and looking,
and shut our eyes, not without amazement,
and let ourselves be carried,
as through the translucence of mica,
to the river that is without the least dapple or shadow,
that is nothing but light — scalding, aortal light —
in which we are washed and washed
out of our bones.
~Mary Oliver
From the beautiful poem you offered ...
and let ourselves be carried,
as through the translucence of mica,
to the river that is without the least dapple or shadow,
that is nothing but light — scalding, aortal light —
in which we are washed and washed
out of our bones.
Thanks wendy.
welcome, amiga.
over the course of my blogging (and RL) life, i've conducted many online eulogies w/ that poem. i love the mary oliver particularly, and had even written it down on a card for someone to take to a dying friend/neighbor in the hospital. as i was writing it, he sat up in bed and demanded to go to home to die. magic, who can say? but i call him lazarus now.
but for female partners (and i should have added gay partners)i also love this by w.h. auden, (and while mr. wd are both ready to leave this mortal coil, we would wish we could leave it together), this is how i'd feel if i were Left Behind:
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
That is a very strong love you share.
I'm sure magic is a part of it.
Thank you for another beautiful poem about life and death. I would love to read more of the poems that move you relation to this subject, here or in a PM.
i'd certainly need time
to reflect, given the holes in my memory. but i've always loved the one that karen von blixen read over deny finch-hatten's burial site high in the ngong hills, irrc, while two masaai warriors watched in the background, standing one one foot, as ever.
To an Athlete Dying Young
~ A. E. Housman
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
mart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears. Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

last night i
remembered this poem from my youth, and it may be one of the reasons that i/we'd sprinkled the cremated ashes of my relatives in places they might help to grow things (an apple orchard, a rose garden, even my father's favorite golf hole.
when god lets my body be
From each brave eye shall sprout a tree
fruit that dangles therefrom
the purpled world will dance upon
Between my lips which did sing
a rose shall beget the spring
that maidens whom passion wastes
will lay between their little breasts
My strong fingers beneath the snow
Into strenuous birds shall go
my love walking in the grass
their wings will touch with her face
and all the while shall my heart be
With the bulge and nuzzle of the sea
~ e.e. cummings
mr. wd had thought i'd been about to send this extraordinary song by bruce cockburn about crossing to the other side to jakkalbessie rather than the mary oliver poem. he agreed that i could send it to her on his behalf:

Thank you both for the powerful
poetry and music.
One beautiful verse from the music, Closer to the Light

on reflection,
i might have said about our strong love, that we've been married for forty-five years, and have gone through 'the best of times and the worst of times' together, and have ended up as each other's best friend. (and of course i was a child bride.) ; )
Condolences, jb.
Losing a spouse is difficult - NCTim and I can attest. I lost my husband much the same way - he went fast. I'm grateful DO didn't suffer (at least it doesn't sound that way) and I'm grateful, for jb, that it was swift.
A poem for the occasion, written when my friend passed in October 2017, but just as appropriate for Divine Order:
Expiration dates are most visible
On the material things we buy.
But I was taken aback,
when yours arrived,
today.
RIP DO.

What a terrible shock
Both divineorder and his beloved jakkalbessie loved traveling and living their lives to the fullest. My heart goes out to JB in sympathy and sorrow. Divineorder was such a kind and thoughtful commenter here. I am sure that his comments were very reflective of the way he lived and viewed the world. Like others here, I will sorely miss him.
He went away doing what he dearly loved, but it was way too soon. Peace be with you, our dear divineorder. Our lives were far better for having known you.

...and D.O. lived well and with grace. I always appreciated his positive spin...trying to look for the good....spreading the word about worthwhile causes and efforts to improve things... a person filled with the wonder of the world and ready to explore. He always had an encouraging comment in my (and others) essays.
He will be missed here at c99 by us all, and I can imagine the loss J.B. must feel. I hope she will lean on our community as she adjusts. What more can any of us wish other than a life well lived. It was our joy and pleasure to to know him.
I'll sing this one for him tonight...peace to all

Very sad news indeed
What a great loss... Always great wisdom in his comments. He knew Chachalacas and Balmoreah, and so much more. I really wanted to meet him and jb knowing they were sometimes only a few hours away, and birders, I figured one day we would cross paths. Alas it was not to be. Very sad indeed. At least he was birding with his love. I'm soooooo sorry. My heartfelt condolences to jb. RIP D.O. We will miss your insight. Fly with the Ivory-bills brother.

My thoughts are with Jakkalbessie. So very sorry. So sudden and hard to believe.
I will miss him and his traveling posts.
Very sad news.
I'm holding jackalbessie in my thoughts. I'm glad she has local, immediate help and support. Sudden death is a sort of gift to the person dying, but a shock to their loved ones and friends.
RIP, divineorder
It is very sad news, indeed! My heartfelt condolences to jakkalbessie.
divineorder was a gem of a person. I had a fair bit of interaction with him here on c99% and on DK over the years. His postings were always informative. He was insightful in his observations of life and politics, respectful of others, never argumentative, and very considerate of what others thought and believed.
The highest compliment one can pay another recently-departed person is to acknowledge that he was a good human being. And more. We will miss him.

It is so hard to believe
that someone so vibrant and present as do, is not here anymore.
All I can say is that the respect and care for do that everyone here has expressed is so true. He seemed so real to me.
I’m so sorry jakkalbessie, for your incredible loss, but I’m sure you find comfort in having spent a lifetime with someone like do, and knowing that he was content in his life. Do, you were blessed with the strength to feel deeply for others and and an enthusiasm for life. I know you will rest in peace.
Stunned and shocked. I really don't know what to say. I felt
an extra bond beyond his writings and photos, having birded and toured CR and Kenya, among other places and spent his absences awaiting the next report of his travels with jb. He will be greatly missed by the entire site I know. Condolences and all the best to jakkalbessie.

Rarely, am I near speechless, but
this is one of those times.
While I plan to further comment at EB, once I've had time to collect my thoughts, and begin to digest this sad, and totally unexpected news, I want to express to you, JB, how very sorry I am that DO was taken from you so suddenly, and unexpectedly. I hope that you find the strength to get through the trying days ahead. Please know that you have many, many friends here at C99, who are willing to lend you a shoulder to lean on. (Including myself--I can be PM'd at UL, if you ever need to talk.)
Although I joined DKos in 2004, only started blogging a little more than 6 years ago. And, I can say without reservation, that of all the folks that I've been fortunate to get to know online, without a doubt, your--and I'd like to think, our--DO was at the top of my list when it came to folks whom I regarded as super kind and caring. Just a fine and decent person in every way.
On top of that, he was knowledgeable about many topics, and always extraordinarily generous in regards to sharing that knowledge with others. I truly can't remember interacting with him without coming away feeling better about things (in general), and knowing more than I did, before we had our discussion.
For me, the discussion of the topic of healthcare, here--especially, Medicare--will never be the same, without him.
JB, I listened to this requiem when I lost my older Brother (and only sibling) in 2015. I hope in some small way, it will give you some solace, as it did me.

Divine Order's posts were lovely and intelligent. They were a great contribution to all of us.
My mother died suddenly. One day she was clipping hedges at my sister's place because my sister was away and our mother wanted to surprise her by cleaning her home and making the property tidy. A day or two later, she was gone. A sudden death can be very difficult for survivors, but, I think a great blessing to one who passes.
Farewell, fellow Caucuser.
Jackkalbessie, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am glad you and divine order had the time together that you had. Some people live their lives without ever finding their mate. Those who do have received an incomparable treasure. I wish I could do something beyond words, but I can only offer them and my very best wishes.
So true,
an incomparable treasure.
So very, very sorry to read this news.
I didn't know d.o. very well, but share the perspectives already expressed here about his core kindness, expansive knowledge, and desire to share both with all of us.
As a tribute to his life well lived, I'd like to try to better emulate him in my posts here. Not that I have much knowledge to share, but I could certainly always be more kind, and more patient, and more full of wonder.
Jackalbessie, may you discover peace in all the wonderful memories you and d.o. made together. We're here for you when you need us.
I'm so sorry
to hear this news. The bit I knew about divineorder was that he was a traveler, a lover of nature, a calm and kind voice. We will absolutely miss that voice here.
Condolences to Jakkalbessie, my thoughts are with her, I am so sorry for her loss.
Wow, what a shock! Sadly, such is life.

Always thought of him and his wife Jakkalbessie as two radical, former teachers with a joie de vivre that sparkled. Would be uplifted to hear stories about their travels and the lovely people they'd encounter, and sometimes become intimately involved with, and through whom they'd meet others, and on like that, sharing and enjoying life.
He will be sorely missed by many.
