Monday Open Thread: December 10 is International Human Rights Day

December 10 is the 345th day of the year
It is also Prickle-Prickle, The Aftermath 52, 3184 YOLD (discordian)
And let us not forget 13.0.6.1.0 by the Mayan Long Count

Universal-Declaration-of-Human-Rights

It's 12-10 and though I've dealt with 12 several times, and 10 also, I've never yet looked at 1210 as a number or year. 1210, the year, isn't remotely illustrious, being beset by a surfeit of Crusades (in my opinion, any is too many, but they had two). There were the Livonian Crusades, an attempt at forced conversion to Catholicism (with the customary conquest, rape, pillaging and looting) of Latvia and Estonia. This appers to have been a segment of a larger and therefore even more Christian attack on all of North-eastern Europe, designated the Northern Crusades. Meanwhile, the uruly lawless brigands operating under the non de guerre brigandage of the Fourth Crusade, having sacked Constantinople and established some Crusader States in the Eastern Mediterranean, stopped off on their way home to besiege the Greek Acrocorinth for anywhere from 3 to 5 years depending upon who you ask before finally conquering it.
As a number, let us just accept that 1210 is a self-descriptive number in base 4 because it consists of 4 digits and has 1 zero, 2 ones, 1 two, and zero threes. Got it? Good.

This small town in western NC, south west of Asheville is not known for heavy snow falls. but rather for the amounts of rain the western part of our county gets each year (the highest in the US outside the Pacific NW).

Well, we got a blizzard here Saturday afternoon through Sunday midday with over two feet of snow dumped in our yard. Power went out on Saturday and was not restored until late last night. The road in front of our house is a heavily traveled road and was blocked by a large tree that fell across both lanes of the road. That prevented snow plows and electrical workers from coming in until the tree was removed.

Thankfully, we now have power which means heat and lights, but now have we rain today to be followed by temps in the low 20's. Ice anyone? I like snow, but not this much. A neighbor said he had never seen this much snow here. This area usually averages less than one foot total snow per year.

I hope smiley7 got the snow they needed for the ski resort he works at. And I hope everyone has a great day wherever you may be.

Ice, lots of ice, deep ice, all of that, is not a good thing, especially for those not equipped to deal with it. Hope it passes soon without too much further damage and injury. Your latitude is somewhere down around Sta Barbara, as near as I can estimate, which is a strange and portentious area for blizzards to happen.

@enhydra lutris the lower elevations of the Appalachians, a little over 2200 feet, about the same elevation as Asheville. It makes for a great place to live and play with a mild climate because usually the snow drops mostly n the upper elevations. This was very unusual for this area. I heard Jim Cantore went to Asheville, which is always like someone putting a hex on you. Diablo LOL However, the hex must have moved south west to our area, because it appears they did not get the big drop we did.

My walking partner and I usually walk every day regardless of temps (we walked in 19* last week) and we usually will walk in light rain too, but it looks like I will not be walking for a couple of days due to ice.

Have a great day, EL and 99%'ers! Good

Someone here pointed out to me that this guy is full of crap. However . . . I don't know . . . some might be nonsense, but some of it seems reasonable.

Geoengineering Watch has again captured radar animations that prove geoengineering operations are manufacturing "winter weather" over specific regions. The increasingly desperate and destructive operations being carried out by the weather-makers is far beyond alarming. Engineering "winter weather" events are one of the primary missions of the climate engineers as the abrupt climate collapse scenario continues to unfold on planet Earth (a scenario being further fueled overall by climate engineering itself). Patented processes of chemical ice nucleation are a primary means of carrying out the engineered winter events. Why aren't so called weather experts willing to acknowledge the massive climate engineering operations and their impacts? Because their paychecks and pensions depend on their denial, the illegal federal gag order on all National Weather Service (NWS) and all National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) employees is a case in point. The 5 minute video below exposes the impacts of ongoing engineered winter scenarios.

diagnosis. While there might be a little bit here, there or elsewhere that seems to be reasonable, that is the nature of the best. If you write enough about anything, some of it will seem to be reasonable. It is theoretically possible, under certain conditions to make slight local alterations in the weather. That doesn't mean that anybody is doing it, let alone that it is routinely being done in a widespread manner. This narrative has been going on for about 70 years now and they have never been able to provide a credible and plausible motive for any of it on an overall basis. There has never once been a well sourced peer-reviewed article or thesis on the topic either.

with the weather in a particular time and place. Usually it is an attempt at rainmaking during a prolonged dry spell. It is usually publicized somewhere, if only in the local rag. The failures get less attention than the successes, especially if a public agency hired a commercial service. Thee have also been attempts to shut-down or redirect hurricanes. Iirc, those are more likely to fail than simple rainmaking. Sometimes it is also experimentation, but again, that stuff is rare and public.

As far as somebody trying to alter global weather patterns on a long-term basis, there is not only no evidence, but the computations and logistics are simply mind boggling. Imagine trying to alter the currents and eddy currents in the entire mississippi river and delta by pouring boiling water or ice water or salt or iron filings into a patch the size of a football field down near St. Louis. It won't happen, it would take near continuous saturation level continent to global scale action that would have to continuously take into account all of the other natural and man-made influences on the weather pattern. We are nowhere near capable of that at the moment. We could disrupt it, we already, unintentionally, do so, but there would be no real point or purpose to simple disruption.

An improvement from the days when scurrying inside our cold dark caves was our only means of defense against inclement weather, it's still unsettling to experience the power that Mother Nature still holds over our lives.

Glad to hear the tree didn't fall on your house instead of in the road!

P.s. I didn't know smiley worked at a ski resort. I thought smileys references to the resort meant they we're on a vacation. Lol.

https://onetreeplanted.org/pages/why-trees plants trees finances tree planting on four continents.

Why are trees so important to the environment?

Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. Ever taken an Aspirin? It comes from the bark of a tree!

Here are the six pillars that explain why trees are so vital...

@divineorder the tree was a pine that was already probably weakened by disease. It fell a couple hundred yards from us and was not in our yard. We did lose limbs from trees due to the weight of the snow on them. That is to be expected with a storm as unusual as this one.

weather guru, "Makes it the biggest snow since 1998 (and for a few spots since 1996). It does NOT rival the Blizzard of '93."
Swoosh, i'm worn out, travel to work and back yesterday required Richard Petty and Steamboat driving skills turning the usual seventeen mile commute into around a five hour adventure in total. Shut the local communities down, including the largest, Boone. Folks are still stuck at home, only main roads are cleared today, the county roads not good.

But as you surmised, the ski mountain is ridiculously busy, holiday numbers, and it's only December 10; you are right, so good for we workers and the community at large.

Thanks for thinking of us in the High Country and am glad you are safe and sound in the storm's wake.

Late good day, el, and all, happy exhaustion here.

for that all that ails ya back then. Wealth (plunder), honor, prestige and a guaranteed seat in hebbin. A motive for anybody and everybody, plus political power up wazoo. There was even a genocidal Crusade waged against some French Christians who didn't sufficiently ape every little nuance of the papist dogma of the period.

The US empire crusades use a different justification narrative, but, in the end, it is still the same con. We need to find a way to put an end to it soon before it eats the globe.

The article smoothly glosses over one piece of the puzzle:

After 19 years of drought and increasing demand, federal water managers project a 52 percent chance that the river’s biggest reservoir, Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam, will fall low enough to trigger cutbacks under agreements governing the system.

.

Growing up in SoCal I noticed quite young that despite constant water conservation "campaigns", demand and use always grew and never declined. Funny how that works.

Had over 6 inches of rain this weekend. The gauge was overflowing yesterday when I emptied it. So far just mist and drizzle today with 30-40 degree temps. The sun is due back tomorrow and I've got plenty of chores to tend to as we dry. We're less than two weeks from the solstice and the turning of day length.

When is human lefts day? I'm tired of always being forced to the right. Have a good one anyway!

because she's all over the place regarding which 'Buy-In' or 'MFA' bills she will support. I'll post an excerpt later of her talking about the Higgins Medicare 'Buy-In' Bill. Even Adam Green of Bold Progressives--a former WJC Administration intern--acknowledges that Higgins is a ConservaDem, which is stated in his Wikipedia entry.

In one piece, Green eschews anything short of MFA. Then, I saw this,

Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said he supports giving everyone the option to buy in to Medicare, and thinks the legislation from Higgins will start a conversation. He wants a "buy-in for all" to be the “new floor” in the debate.

“It’s ironic that it took a conservative Democrat to jumpstart the momentum for Medicare buy-in but now that it’s there, there will be a huge push for Medicare option for all,” Green said.

“It’s jumpstarting the concept of a buy-in in 2019 and will lead to momentum of a buy-in for every family and small business.”

Whoah!

Seriously, it's odd to me that 'progressive' Adam Green is okay with a 'reform' (Higgins') that would have the US Comptroller General appoint a Committee to find efficiencies in/reform the Medicare program. Tells me all I need to know about him.

Thanks for today's OT, EL. Thought of you the other day when I bought a National Holiday calendar. Hopefully, I can add to the conversation along those lines, this coming year. Wink

I'm still recovering this morning from a neighborhood holiday party I went to Saturday night. Some party you're thinking, right? Well it was but really what killed me was having to work an 8 hour shift after only 4 hours sleep. A difficult thing to ask your body to do on a good day. But a crazy crowded seasonal Sunday where customers were tipping over end displays of wine and complaining you weren't bagging their groceries fast enough while they stood there on their cell phone glaring at you? Brutal.

Still, it was worth it. I had a wonderful time Saturday night. My neighbor did a beautiful job decorating the place, both inside and outside. She served a nice variety of Dim Sum, sesame noodles, ribs, and sushi. The dessert table, my favorite thing at holiday parties, featured an almond torte that was so moist and flavorful, I went back for thirds. I also enjoyed the plump chocolate covered strawberries. Decorated like little tuxedos, these tasty morsels were the perfect compliment to the not cheap champagne I was very pleased to be drinking.

But really what I enjoyed most of all was the company. Neighbors and friends, who are funny even when I'm not drinking champagne, really added to the evenings enjoyment. Eventually, I happily stumbled home around 2am while the party was still going on because I had to work the next day. That'll teach me to pick up an 8am shift on a Sunday morning, eh?

Hope all of you are doing well this holiday season.

greeted as liberators?

The government of Iraq announced on Tuesday that it would seek to build an international coalition to establish democracy in the state of North Carolina.

Speaking to reporters in Baghdad, the Iraqi President, Barham Salih, said that Iraq had reached out to regional powers including Canada and Mexico to launch a military invasion of North Carolina’s Ninth Congressional District to “protect the North Carolinians’ right to self-determination.”

While many in the international community commended Salih’s desire to bring democracy to North Carolina, some critics warned that the effort could wind up destabilizing other American states.

“If North Carolina gets democracy, it’s only a matter of time before the people of Wisconsin, Georgia, and other failed states demand it as well,” Muqtada al-Sadr, the Iraqi politician and cleric, said. “Iraq could find itself in a quagmire with no exit strategy.”

Brushing aside such concerns, President Salih said that his international coalition could send troops to N.C.-9 as early as next week.

“We will be greeted as liberators,” he predicted.
