Are you funking kidding me? Born with two strikes, brown and poor. Apparently genius does not include the ability to discern extenuating circumstances, nor can a master deal maker devise a win-win.

One of the problems with gross wealth disparity is isolation from society. What kind of genius sits on a gold throne and tweets disparaging comments about people they have never met?

Sometimes people are overcome by the darkness. I know I am. I have thoroughly enjoyed 45's hissy fit. I fully support alternative solutions to the problem and advocate driving him funkin' nuts. Poke the ego, don't let up, complete melt down is possible probable.

The hissy-fit thrower has got his panties in a knot. But, they're always in a knot when the petulant child is not getting his way! Which seems to be happening more often.

Will the new HoR bring about the challenges needed to spur change or will the old guard prevail and keep the oligarchy humming along?

The new Reps are already scaring the status quo. You know, AOC doesn't know how to dress, read the latest headline - so when they are attacking your clothing, they've got nothing on your brain!

I'm hoping for an improved world in 2019. I'm hoping my world improves in 2019 - I'm in a shoe now, walking haltingly, but hope to be full-strength in the new year.

Have a beautiful day and weekend, everyone! Pleasantry

moxie! She’s killing it - I just hope they don’t break her - she’s giving us hope! And, she’s got more of these newly elected progressives with her, which I hope make some big noises to effect some big changes.

Either way - it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. Hopefully the odds will be in our favor - Wink

@NCTim @RaggedyAnn

I'm not going to speculate on how the not-yet-30yr old Congresswoman for my district will turn out.

But what did she do this week? She turned up in two consequential places to lend her support to dissidents.

First she stands with a collective of local NYC council members and state senators to staunchly oppose the disastrous clandestine Amazon deal. Then she attends the "Democrats Stand Up or Step Aside" #NewGreenDeal protest at the highest ranking Dem Congresswoman's office to show solidarity.

If that ain't action, putting yourself out there in person with other advocates and protester, I don't know what is.

Not to mention as you both say, she's in a white hot RW spotlight that seeks to impugn and destroy her - that's how afraid they are of her message. Not to mention that he socialist message comes straight from "an attractive young woman with moxie," which intimidates the funk out of white male patriarchy.

I thought about putting an essay together (and still might) wondering how people felt about what I thought could be serious revolutionary ramifications - a Congresswoman-elect showing up at the Minority Leader's office to join a protest against her? Could this just what those working inside the system need to see to embolden them and others to be much more actively involved with pressuring elected officials? Like Bernie, she could be working on the inside, while also making sure to honor the grassroots by showing up in public to stand with protesters when they come calling. After all, they are literally her donors.

This is what Bernie had been saying. This is what FDR meant when he said, "you'll have to make me do it."

I'm not at all saying she's some kind of savior to usher in a Utopian Socialist world. But there's something to be said for choosing to participate in high-profile protest actions, especially of your own leader. That could send out some serious ripples.

And the biggest takeaway:

She can do these things, because, she takes no corporate money. She is beholden only to small donors and the Democratic Socialist of America who got her elected. That means no lobbyists at her door demanding to reel her in on Day One (or before).

Could be a whole new ballgame.
Or could be more of the same.

I think it's too early to tell.

But I'll tell you this: it's got me thinking more about joining a recently DSA due-paying friend in the neighborhood and attending their meetings.

@Mark from Queens The MSM media want to perpetuate a Democratic rift using AOC as the boogie woman. Things likely are not as presented. How convenient it is to talk about personalities, instead of the issue. I suspect Pelosi is OK with the protest. It shines light on an important issue that is primarily being defined by ideology and politics, when it should be in the hands of scientists. So please consider that the reporting is all horse race ideology based conjecture. I am willing to wager that NP appreciates AOC and does not consider her an adversary. The primary disunity is with the who and how to hate bunch. And now Revolution.

@NCTim @NCTim I am the descendant of eastern European immigrants, 2nd generation natural born via paternal grandfather, and 3rd generation via the remainder. I grew up in SW Pennsylvania among the coal mines and steel mills. Our family parties (weddings, graduations, baptisms, reunions) had a very ethnic flare. It sounded like this:

Bring whatever you feel. Food, libations, your instrument, … Let's party!

I wish it was possible to share some of our rain with CA...we had more than 4" this week. Sure was odd to watch CA burn as the deluge poured here.

US territories like PR evidently exists for our exploitation. When they need our help it is adios amigos.

Did you get any snow? Just missed us going North (maybe your way). Got my order of chestnut trees yesterday, and the weekend is forecast-ed to be sunny, so I'll get those in the ground soon. Reckon I've got about 20 more years to watch them grow.

Lots of turkeys around this week....the feathered variety that is. Deer are active too. The cooler weather has wildlife more active - lot's of bird activity at the feeder too.

Well, hoping you all have some good activities this weekend. Stay warm everybody!

@Lookout 4" or so. The weekend is supposed be nice. Fifties and sunny. The radar only showed snow along the ridge lines, south of ~WV/PA border.

The exploitation is borderless. For example, US resource consumption, US arms sales and the domestic labor market.

Happy Friday, I can't listen to Trump every day, that would be bad for my 5.health. What y'all repeat here is enough, thanks for filtering. I hope Trump doesn't start another real war, keep tweeting. George W. Bush, America’s 43rd President (2001-2009), was transformed into a wartime President in the aftermath of the airborne terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, facing the “greatest challenge of any President since Abraham Lincoln.”

Really? That's what people think now? The dissembling continues, another topic to unlearn.

Democrat Katie Porter ousts Orange County Republican Mimi Walters

LOS ANGELES — Democrat Katie Porter captured a Republican-held U.S. House seat Thursday in the heart of what once was Southern California’s Reagan country, extending a rout of the state’s GOP House delegation.

Porter’s upset in Orange County is a sign of changing times in a region once known nationally as a GOP fortress. The coastal county southeast of Los Angeles was home to President Richard Nixon, and President Ronald Reagan once likened it to a Republican heaven.

Porter, a law professor and protege of Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, defeated Republican Rep. Mimi Walters, who was re-elected in a walkover just two years ago in the 45th District. The latest update to the vote count gave Porter 51 percent and a 6,203-vote lead.

California Economic Summit convenes in Santa Rosa, outlines path to achieve California dream

Sunny weather, majestic ocean views and the dream of a better life propelled millions to move to California in the last century and a half, but the reality today is wide income inequality, unaffordable housing and devastating wildfires.

With the goal of building resilience and making the California dream more attainable through systemic change, about 550 leaders in business, politics, nonprofits, environmental groups and economic agencies gathered in Santa Rosa on Thursday and Friday for the seventh annual California Economic Summit.

“They are problem solvers, not complainers,” said Lenny Mendonca, co-chair of California Forward, a Sacramento-based nonprofit that co-hosts the summit.

Seventh! wah Good luck.

Gore appeared before attendees Wednesday morning in an N95 respirator. He said the smoky air from the Camp fire just 13 months after firestorms devastated Santa Rosa was another reminder of resilience.

@NCTim thanks I am ready for a good day now. Pie!

What is Lemon Meringue?

Lemon Meringue by Exotic Genetix is a sweet, zestful cross of Lemon Skunk and Cookies and Cream. This pungent combo emits a variety of aromas including citrus, diesel, and nuttiness, but at the center of this bouquet is a tart slice of lemon meringue pie with a fat dollop of whipped cream on top. Lemon Meringue offers uplifting mental effects and sativa-driven energy that encourages physical activity. This strain’s subtle motivational qualities and pleasant euphoria make it a go-to for folks combating fatigue, depression, and minor headaches.

scooby dooby doo. I like your playlist so much I am going to youtube-dl the bunch, and rip the audio for my ogg player. Got that? lol

@eyo During the motorcycle trip, I had some Lemon Skunk. Lemon is one of the more common terpenes. There is now research showing that the organplectic properties, taste and smell, are central to the cannabis effects, More so than Indica versus Sativa. In fact the Indica vs. Sativa, stoned vs. high, paradigm probably has more to do with harvest time than genetics. The Sativas being primarily tropical are slower to mature. This is due to the photosynthetic properties being in concert with the more balanced light and dark periods of the tropical day. The Indicas, being primarily more temperate, ripen quickly when they sense the days shortening. The net of this is that Indicas are usually more mature or even over ripe when harvested and Sativas are usually less ripe when harvested. Harvest time also explains some of the deviation between batches of the same strain. Along with the gardener's skills.

PS - Pie for breakfast is the title of next week's open thread. Smile I prepared the thread yesterday, because I am hitting the road. Pie for breakfast day happens every Black Friday and Boxing Day! I had Pineapple Chunk for breakfast.

coast. This one is up by Pigeon Point. Sub-fifty out there. Vaguely leisurely morning, still a couple of hours from home, but only a couple, and that's today's destination. OTOH, a ton of stuff to do before Thursday.

Had lunch in Gonzales yesterday at La Enchilada Cafe - maximum authentico, as one would expect from hte locale. Maybe 6 tables in the whole place and we got the last one. Among the tacos, for example, were asada, lengua, tripa and cabeza. My tamal obviously came right out of the steamer and the tortillas were freshly made. Cinco estrellas.

"New Yorkers Hit The Snowy Streets To Demand Tougher Rent Laws"

Have to mention first how good it is to see the Gothamist back in action. Their coverage of what's happening on the ground, in neighborhoods all around the city, had been unsurpassed. Although it does suck that Neoliberal WNYC bought them out (but better than formerly in the hands of RW scumbag/Trump supporter Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade).

As I was delighting in taking the kids out for the first snow of the year a bunch of committed folks weren't deterred from what is on pretty much everyone's mind here.

Six inches of snow and sleet didn’t deter hundreds of tenants from across New York City and state from marching up Wall Street Thursday night demanding stronger protections for low-income tenants.

“I’m here to tell you what’s going on upstate!” yelled Barbara Rivera, a 30-year-old seamstress from Rochester, who drove six hours with fifteen of her neighbors to march and address the crowd. “The ceiling in my building fell on my daughter. By the grace of god she was not hurt. Other tenants are living with mold… we have rats, you name it. And when we brought it to the attention of our property manager, he said, ‘If you don't like it, get out.’"

Check out this extortion racket:

Currently, counties outside of New York City and neighboring Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau cannot legally opt in to rent stabilization; tenants don’t have the right to a lease renewal, or incremental rent increases, or housing court. The alliance hopes to expand these rights statewide in addition to eliminating loopholes, including vacancy decontrol, that have contributed to the siphoning of hundreds of thousands of New York City’s stabilized apartments since the mid-1990s.

Josefina Ventura, a rent-stabilized tenant from Washington Heights, told Gothamist that she’s met with many upstate tenants recently. "It's horrible, I tell you,” she said. “Because at least here we can go to housing court

We're caught in this corporate dystopia of the Orwellian "preferential rent" scam (the equivalent of War is Peace/Freedom is Slavery). Preferential, only to the landlord. In our case the little douche whose inherited his mommy's building has raised our rent almost 10% twice in a row now - just because he can.

Whether New York’s new Democratically-controlled State Senate will prioritize expanding rent stabilization remains to be seen. Governor Cuomo has stated as recently as this summer that he is “open to a conversation with all stakeholders about the details of rent control statewide.” However, the Real Estate Board of New York is reportedly shifting its lobbying efforts from Republicans towards more moderate Democrats.

Julia Salazar, who attended the march, is a newly-elected state senator from North Brooklyn and a member of Democratic Socialists of America. She ran on a platform of universal rent control, alongside Zellnor Myrie, another freshman Senator from Brooklyn.

But Senator Michael Gianaris of Queens, one of the more senior legislators in attendance Thursday and a vocal critic of how the Amazon deal was brokered, demurred on expanding rental protections statewide, focusing instead on existing rent-stabilized tenants. “I am working hard to eliminate [major capital improvements], preferential rent and problems associated with vacancy decontrol,” he said.

I don’t think it guarantees anything,” said 24-year-old Sean Riley, a DSA member from Brooklyn, of the new Democratic State Senate majority. “I mean, we had Nancy Pelosi calling for bipartisanship with Trump… last week. We have a possibility of winning stronger rent laws now, but the Democrats aren't going to do it themselves. We have to keep up the pressure.”

Everyone should know that Cuomo is a deceptive and manipulative Neoliberal bastard.

Gianaris is talking tough lately and it's good to know he was out again in the streets for this (also against Amazon).

But note the difference between the two elected officials on record about this. Salazar of DSA ran on a platform of rent control (similar to Socialist Alternative Kshama Sawant of the Seattle city council, who also has huge support because of her unwavering stance on such a critical, existential issue).

Not taking corporate money is revolutionary. It allows one to take stands free of being beholden to corporate donors, while building your base of volunteers and canvassers, which is an essential part of building movements.
