Blue Wave, Baby! Hell, Tsunami!
Seems we lost Every major race that would determine a "blue wave" or not. Every last stinkin' one! Canova?? Please. He got a whopping 5%. A beatdown of epic proportions! Beto?? A dud. Georgia Gov.?? fuhgetaboutit. Rick Scott, Scott Walker?? One's going to the Senate, the other waiting a recount, but likely retains his Gov. seat. Did the Dims win anywhere??
Well, glad you asked. Yes. They. Did.
And overall, better than the 2010 Tea Bagger Rebellion!
So, just on that alone, classify it a tsunami! Just on that alone!
Ponder that!
Becuz in 2010 the baggers won by 7.2% overall. Or, something like 53.6 R - 46.4 D.
Last night Dims won by 9.2% overall. 2 points higher, or something like 54.6 D - 45.4 R.
Any way you slice it that's a Big Win! yuuuge!
So why aren't we feeling it??
Becuz in 2010 the baggers picked up 63 seats! Something like that.
In that neighborhood. A yuuuge ass whoopin' they put on us! This year??
This year Dims picked up 32-ish. About half of 2010.
Why the big difference in pickups despite the yuuuge tsunami win??
One word. Gerrymandering.
Gerrymandering prevented the big pickup despite the yuuuge tsunami victory.
Making it look like an ooops, instead. Pardon us for taking back The House!
Wasn't our intention... And pretty much treated that way in the M$M.
"It looks like they may have taken back The House, but we can't figure out how they did it. It could be that they were just lucky, the cards just fell right... "
Or it could be that Dim voters kicked some serious ass - some Tea Bagger tsunami ass - but the Repubs were lucky that they had those Districts gerrymandered - or it would have been a Bloodbath of 2010 Tea Bagger proportions!! Which it was despite the gerrymandering!
A blue wave tsunami we won't hear about.
Comments
Or it could be that
like Hillary's "3 million more votes", we just saw a lot of increased Dem turnout in places they were already going to win anyway. Anywhere that was a tossup, Dems lost. And they didn't flip many conservative seats - they mostly just purged Repubs from districts that Hillary won. Not much of a wave, if you ask me, let alone a tsunami.
Again, gerrymander is the word,
and the reason for the "non wave."
This victory was yuuuge - of tsunami proportions.
And, just like Georgia, where she had to win Yuuuge just to make it close, gerrymandeing prevented the wave from being Yuuuger. Otherwise... 2010 revisited!

gerrymander is indeed the word.
though just as i did last night, you're signing off early on Walker's survival. turns out that, in a hissy fit after the last election, he and his minions (or controllers, or whatever) jammed through a law saying a candidate can't request a recall unless the margin is less than 1% -- and the margin is apparently about 1.1%. so he's got no recourse.
meanwhile, check out these nauseatingly ethics-free quotes from the GOP speaker of the wisconsin assembly:
do they know that they are evil? or is it really all cognitive dissonance and denial?

As Wink notes, in many cases it's all about the
gerrymander. Wisconsin saw record turnouts, not just for a midterm election, but for any election. Turnout in Madison was NINETY-TWO POINT NINE PERCENT!
Nonetheless, despite the Dems winning all six statewide offices (Gov, Lt Gov, Sec of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, US Senate) 5 of 8 Congressional districts remain GOP.
The great mystery to me is that Tammy Baldwin, running against a Republican woman, outpolled Evers by a LOT. Like ... who the hell would vote for Baldwin, but not Evers (some of the difference would be explained by votes for the Green candidate for governor, but that's not nearly enough to make up the difference).

Same is true in Michigan.
Dems won the Governor, AG, SoS, one of two supreme court openings, and flipped two Congressional seats from red to blue yet failed to flip control of the Michigan House and Senate. Say it louder Wink... GERRYMANDER
Thank god we passed gerrymander reform. I just hope they put it into place before 2020. I hate Democrats, but I absolutely hate Republicans more.
I am also totally underwhelmed at the media analysis of what happened in Michigan. We can thank Bubba for all the media consolidation that destroyed local coverage and gave birth to fake news.

Good evening Wink.
It was back in the summer of 2015 that we met, that one time, you and I.
My eyes were opened that summer, about the Party and about that one website.
I look at this election as a net loss for progressives.
The corporate Dims think they've been vindicated.
They won, didn't they ?
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
It seems like everybody is declaring victory.
I can't sort it all out.
I mean, McCaskill, Heitkamp and Donnelly all got the boot, which seems like a pretty brutal repudiation of the strategy of Go Right, Old Dem!

The worst, the very worst, emailer was Heidi.
I sometimes donate money to candidates so they have me on a sucker list.
Heidi's emails were pathetic and they came every day.
Second most annoying emailer was Claire, followed by Beto.
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.

Although...
I received several voteblue type emails that looked to be supporting beto, but weren't actually from him. I heard later that the vampires are getting sneakier.
Remember kos and etc. sending out a "fundraiser" and taking a major cut of the funds raised? Yeah. There aught to be a law...
yeah, I hope we get
a chance to meet again!
That beer went down too quickly.
And, yeah... I don't know if it was a total loss for progressives,
but more corporate Dims won, yes.
Here in NY 'we' flipped more than 30 seats from Red to Blue in our state Senate, a fair share of them progressives that booted blue dog "Democrats" that voted on the Red side of the aisle for the past 8 years, so... progress is being made. Just not yet on the Big Stage.
It may not have been the wave we hoped for, but another one is coming in 2020.
Always good to see you!

The scales fell from my eyes, there in Phoenix.
That one website boycotted their own convention because Bernie was there.
It was Netroots' 10th anniversary, if I'm not mistaken, and they didn't go.
Raúl was there. We were on the same team for the pub quiz.
I learned a lot that summer.

It was a good weekend
despite the blistering heat.
Ate at a Vietnamese place before bumping in to you, and a real Mexican joint on the south end of town where, as luck would have it, a WWE-type wrestling troupe of sorts started setting up a ring not far from our table (we ate outside). LoL, the waitress asked "what are you doing?", then ducked inside to tell the owner a bunch of renegade gypsy wrestlers had invaded uninvited. Best dinner entertainment I had had in awhile! Turns out they don't bother with things like invitations or permission, they just start setting up somewhere - takes them about an hour - and send out the Social Media announcements before setting up that, "the show starts in 90 minutes!" And, in an hour or so there are dozens if not 100 people showing up to enjoy the show! Like magic! "Sir, you better order more beer, becuz we have a hundred people going to be here in an hour or so. And they're thirsty!" We left before the crowd started filing in, but it was a hoot watching them set up - like a small circus - while munching our burritos!! Was a good weekend! And, yeah, the other site ducked the event becuz Bernie.
