Signal Wave

Good morning to all!

New book(s) I'm reading: I finally got hold of the original Murdoch mysteries in written form--Maureen Jennings' originals. I've read Under the Dragon's Tail and Vices of My Blood, because they were the only ones in the library. I think Under the Dragon's Tail is an early installment, at least--Murdoch is still mourning his fiancee, dead of the flu.

So far, I'd say pretty good, solid, three-star mysteries. I took off a star for some grammatical errors that irritate me, but might not bother others. I feel that if you get something published, surely one of the many paid people who see the thing along the way ought to catch blatant grammatical error. I'm grateful to have found them, in an era which is a sad nadir for detective fiction and murder mysteries of all kinds, but I admit I'm not sure how or why Murdoch became such a sensation. I'm glad he did, because if he hadn't become Canada's answer to Sherlock Holmes, we wouldn't have the magnificent Murdoch Mysteries series (which has, by the way, taken considerable liberties with the supporting characters, I now discover). Still, for me it's like going on a first date, and having a nice, comfortable time, but not understanding why my girlfriend raved about the guy so much when she was setting up the date.

New series I'm watching, because I got unaccountably tired of my Suleiman soap opera. I moved from medieval Istanbul to China:

The Rise of Phoenixes
(Chinese: 天盛长歌; pinyin: Tiānshèng Cháng Gē) is a 2018 Chinese television series that is loosely based on the novel Huang Quan (Chinese: 凰权) by Tianxia Guiyuan. It stars Chen Kun and Ni Ni.

It's about a struggle for imperial power within a new dynasty, with the potential remnant of the older dynasty complicating matters. So far, interesting, and a trifle difficult to follow, but worth it. Good acting, and some beautiful costuming, which always pleases me.

What I'm currently listening to:

S J Tucker is a beloved (mostly folk)singer and storyteller who has done a lot of work on the pagan festival circuit. People see Joni Mitchell among her influences, and I can see that. It's good. Here's two of my favorite songs off the album. This one basically expresses my political position these days:

And this one, interestingly enough, expresses what my political position used to be:

How are you all today?

I look forward to listening to your music later on and checking out the book series. Will be off to go visit my mother-in-law soon. She is 93 and has short-term memory loss. Dementia I guess. However, it is a happy version. She seems happy and content all of the time and usually knows you.

Will check back here later.

Thanks for the OT!

saw his mom, she said, as he was leaving, "Well, I don't know who you are, but you seem like a very nice man."

Bittersweet.

it a sweet story--without knowing who he was, she liked and complimented him and that had made him happy. It was also a nice memory for him. He smiled while he told me the story and chuckled nostalgically when he told the story. However, maybe it was upsetting to people currently in the struggle. If so, I am so very sorry.

starting with continuously forgetting that I'm forgetting parts of it. That, to some extent, could be a good thing, but it is constantly impeding and reducing my productivity across the board and slowing me down. Again, not entirely a bad thing, but not a good time for it either. I have a lot of catching up to do all across the board.

At least I'm not spending a lot of time and energy on politics. There's a ton of strum und drang about foregone conclusions, like Kavanaugh getting the appointment. In a very real sense this goes straight back to the DLC and Bill Clinton if not before, pernicious policies and ideologies that ensured a shift of power to the GOP which would then openly institute the oligarchy they had been slyly and deceptively working toward themselves. Piss on 'em, I'll do what I can to break the machine and contrive a replacement in my own way, but I'm not going to waste energy paying attention to all the daily doings that are so expected and so easy to predict.

RANT OFF.

Thanks for the OT and have a wonderful day.

I'm the same way about Andrew Gillum. He has some decent qualities, but even if I ignore everything that's wrong with the Democratic party generally and the Florida Democratic party in particular, what the hell is he going to do up there with a legislature that's been heavily Republican and completely fucked up for at least twenty years?

(national, state, local) is a 24/7 shell game. And every single time you think you know which is the winning shell, you're wrong. In 1992 and 1996, I knew the winning shell was not Bill Clinton. I was right. In 2004, I kinda sorta thought it might be John Kerry. I was wrong, but at least I had not placed a bet. In 2008, I definitely thought it was Obama. I bet big. I was wrong.

In 2012, I knew I should stop picking Democrats. I was right. In 2016, I thought it was Sanders. I bet even bigger than I had on Obama. The jury is out. However, my bet was placed for the purpose of helping him get his message out, which he did. However, at some point, even this cynic had begun to hope for more.

Now they’re saying that they may be able to convert and keep all the old posts and comments. I assume that means things would be brought over in such a way that old links (URLs) would still work, If that wouldn’t be true, it seems to me a lot of the usefulness of keeping old material would be lost.
