I don't like to repeat myself.

I've been looking around at my old diaries over at TOP, and was thinking about bringing them over here. I thought about it for a while, and realized my fundamental problem with doing so.

I do NOT like to repeat my work. I know that seems dumb from an author's standpoint, as we often go over the same material at least 4-5 times in order to check for impact, try out different phrasing, and numerous other facets of the craft, but it's still something that haunts me. I don't like to say the same thing over and over, repeating the same premises, and generally talking about the same issues. To me, it feels like a waste of time and effort to constantly regurgitate the process, when I can try new things, examine different arguments, and enjoy a different response.

I guess in a sense, I'm a dilettante of writing. I've done pretty much everything in my writing career. I've done serious drama, game design, romance, science fiction, fantasy, a couple screenplays, political discourse, social discourse, comedy, and pornography. All are fun, and I can't stand the idea of limiting myself to one kind of writing. Yes, I don't think I'll ever be recorded as a "master" of any one genre or style, and to me that's all to the good. The last thing I ever want to do is give up the freedom to explore new ideas by sealing myself into any one box.

I bring this up because even the word "Independent" doesn't fit my political ideals. I've listened to all facets of the political spectrum. Some groups horrify me with their ignorance. Some groups horrify me with their racism. Others impress me with their ideals but sadden me with their naivety. Others crush my hope with their cynicism but impress me with their ability to organize. Like any group, what they do means more to me than what they say.

So why do I bring this up? Maybe because it's to point out that while I'm a Bernie voter, I don't for one second think he's perfect or will be the savior of our political system. I do think that he'll be far better than anybody else out there, and that's saying quite a lot. I do not look at him like a lesser of two evils, but on the scale of goods, he's not at the top.

The one thing that Bernie is, which I personally never will be is consistent. While he has constantly worked hard to maintain the same track record, I have not done the same in my life. The irony, however, is that through her actions, Hillary is also perfectly consistent. Not through her words, but that's not what I look at. Through her actions, Hillary has always, ALWAYS favored herself and her core constituency. I think that's why she's really as popular as she is. She's not a flip-flopper in any meaningful way. When push comes to shove, she'll always do whatever is necessary to gain more power.

So with that in mind, this is why you're not going to be seeing me bringing my old "diaries" over here. I may touch on some of the same topics from time to time, but there won't be a copy/paste. I've done that, and gotten the responses. Maybe not the response I wanted, but that's not what it's about. It's about trying new experiences for me. Writing is an exploration, and if I'm not willing to go off of the map, I sure as hell wouldn't enjoy myself as much as I am currently.

But I think I will import all my old diaries as "drafts" in my blog just to have access to them. I have a lot of good links, etc. that I would hate to lose. That keeps them private here, right?

I just don't even want to think about my writing over there, because there's a definite taint of self-censorship on many of the articles. Even down to the topics I selected.

Toot toot!

Maybe you could put them away someplace where you could forget about them, but they won't be lost.

Maybe they are part of the history you're supposed to learn from? Maybe a whole lot of people are supposed to learn from.

Perhaps you'll find what you want without ever even needing them.

Just a thought.

own memory, or to point people to in order to avoid repeatedly saying the same stuff over and over and some were to be the start or series that I never went further with. I plan on bringing them over and actually posting them, but probably not until after my desert trip, which is looming.

might be just the exact thing that needs to be said. I actually used an updated old diary some time ago on my Morning Open Thread because it seemed appropriate.

Mostly because I know for a fact I haven't READ half of the old essays brought over here.

I just don't like to do the same thing, ya know? Tried it once for a few short stories and while I got critical praise, I hated myself for it.

it's interesting to see if they are still relevant and, as gg says, sometimes they just hit the spot.

so let me gently urge you to reconsider your stance on reposting your "old" stuff . . . and consider too that many people here may not have read your essays before... so they will be new to some of us.

write on . . .

Sometimes people will come in and convince me I'm WRONG.

All right, I tell you what... I was already planning on taking Saturday's off, (Have to do the Sunday OT) so that would be a great day to have a DMW Backlog essay...

and don't know what you have written, you would make me search your diaries at TOP, which is something I don't like to do these days.

And I believe repetition is much of what we do in our lives, so it has its meaning and role to play. Kids watch actions of their parents, and if some are repeated often, the kids catch it, be it the bad actions or the good ones. I invite you to repeat yourself. At least save your diaries as drafts here, you never know what's going to happen to them over there. Smile

May be I erase mine at TOP, and just keep very few as drafts here, the ones I actually liked to have written and forget all of the crap I just spewed out because I was ... pretty, pretty unhappy. (I like Sanders using the words pretty, pretty in his joking remarks, so I steal that). Luckily I am not a writer and haven't written much at all.

This is why I love this place. When I'm wrong, people call me out respectfully.
