Friday Night Photos - Snow Flurries Up North edition

Ugh!

Anyway:

Off for dinner. With the week's circus, feel free to depose yourselves and post the evidence.

Not sure when I'll be back.

More photos from the Pogonip. What it is (Snoopy - finally answer your question)...

Pogonip's 640 acres and 8 miles of trail serve up prime Santa Cruz hiking, walking and running through redwood forest, oak woodland and remnants of coastal terrace prairie, plus some good old-fashioned, totally nonnative-yet-fetching-nonetheless grassland.

I used to camp at Big Basin that's just up from SC? I don't see any in your photos? Love the tree bark. I see different things in it each time I look at it.

There are not so many redwoods in Santa Cruz. The Pogonip has six old growth redwoods and a bunch of others and oaks and some kind of maple I think. Leaves look maple like. The photo with the fish is right below a redwood and 30 feet away from one of the old growths. I hug it each time I walk there. I love that tree. I wonder if it feels my love. I think someone made a preserve out of the 640 acres there. It is truly an amazing place. There are bunch more redwoods up in Boulder Creek. Pretty amazing but a bit far for a daily walk.

The trees at the cemetery are having a bad year because of lack of water. The irrigation pond was supposed to be cleaned out this year but the guy who was going to do it just kept telling them 'next week' and so they got behind on watering which was bad because we had such hot weather. There have been lots of limbs crashing during windy days. I saw how many tree limbs have come down today when my screensaver flashed some photos from years back. They're much smaller and more are going to be cut all the way down soon. I walked past my favorite willow tree one morning and when I went back that evening the whole tree was down. Came back the next day and it was gone. It must have been over a century old.

The mountains are usually very vibrant this time of year , but the colors have already peaked and the leaves are dying instead of turning colors. I love the place in autumn. And spring. Okay. All the time. I keep thinking I'll get bored walking there every day, but there is always something new that catches my eye.

photos of Charlie--she is an adorable girl! Looks like she might be feeling a little bit better--I hope so, anyway.

Got caught up in NHK's thread, and didn't realize this OT had been posted. So late, guess I'll wait until Friday-week to post one of my infamous 'stock' photos.

Wink

Hope you and your crew have a great weekend. It's cooling off in this neck of the woods--thankfully!

People will post their photos the next day so go ahead and post your photos. I tried posting this in the EBs a few nights ago but got an error message. You had posted one with puppies in it. How is your search going for one?

love to know how their little lives turned out. Hopefully, very well. Smile

Think I'll take a pass on posting a pic this evening, since I'm pretty whipped, and planning to check out for the evening, shortly. Honestly, I didn't have anything in mind for this evening, but, had fully intended to find a Tweet, or something--before I got waylaid for so long.

No more news on the 'pup' front, except that we still hope to adopt a Golden [by late winter]. Fingers crossed that the folks I'm talking to will have a litter sometime between late December and February. (Gives Mr M more time to get better.)

Obviously, except for getting a few items that will fit a small pup--raincoat & winter coat, for starters--we'll have pretty much everything we'll need. Expect there will be a period of time that a coat and raincoat that we already have (one, never worn) will fit a Golden pup. Later, of course, a larger size of both will be required.

Have a good one . . .

I'm thinking that they have long hair now that they are grown up. We kept Sammy for a month after she was picked out and we had a blast with her.

Great black and whites ... love 'em. I learned photo from the darkroom out so really appreciate light and tone. In a way color depreciates those aspects. The marsh is very appealing, and the urban scene could have been a back cover to "Animals" (p.floyd), where is it taken?

The first shot is the Minnehaha, until she falls into the Mississippi. She drifts by us.

The other sepia is part of Downtown by the... Mississippi.

Wow, that last shot of the bridges is great. There is some small reflection in the window that is very mysterious. Just a wonderfully complex composition. Thanks.

Hi all, Hope your week went better than the nation's did...

Cerambycid aka Longhorn Beetles are favorites amongst Coleoptra (beetle) folk.
This is Stenapsis verticalis insignis, which meets to eat flowers, broadcast pheromes, and mate in September only on certain Evergreen Sumac. About 2" of body, and 2" antennae, it is a spectacular beast of a bug.
stenap0923b-sm.jpg

I really hate manmade objects in my nature photos, but sometimes you can't help it, like trying to follow a diving hawk. Damn wires. Red-shouldered Hawk. I liked the pose anyway.
rshk092118a.jpg

This is a Snout butterfly. We had a flight of millions pass the last three days. I have no idea how wide or long it was, there have been flights measured in billions. There were thousands in our yard at once at times. They were nectaring on the sap on the pecan leaves besides the flowers and hitting the water by the hundreds if you sprayed it around. You can see the shape of the long snout well in the shadow.
snout092718b.jpg

Here is a side view of the head, you can see the palps extending forward from the eyes.
snout092718c.jpg

This is what clouds of Snouts look like. For folks driving around, your windshield is quickly covered in Snout snot. I once had the misfortune of having to drive through them and had to stop every 20 miles and wire brush the radiator to stop the overheating, they completely block airflow.

Thanks for all the info on the bugs. I just read that one of the measures of the lack of bug life is the lack of dead bugs on windshields while driving. True for driving up I5. When I was younger they were all over the front window and now not so many. Millions sound good.

The hooded mergansers are still hanging around on our pond; here are a few shots I got of them:

I hope they come back when the males have their adult colors. I don't think there are fish in our pond, so I don't know what they are finding to eat.

Migration is in full swing now; the other day I looked up to see a couple dozen swallows fly over, then they were gone again. Ours have been gone for a couple of weeks already. Our blue jays started coming back to the feeders yesterday; I saw three today. I sure missed them over the summer, though I would hear them yelling often.

I've been thinking of putting together a photo book-coffee table book of my best bird photos some day. So far I have 34 photos that I'm especially proud of; not sure how many pages I'd want it to be. I'm open to suggestions/tips!

Cheers!

Beautiful shot of bird with the open wings. Here the sparrows are back but I have changed the food because we were getting rats. I found some pepper oil to put on the sunflower seeds. Works, we have no rats but less birds. And the sparrows did not hang around. I will look up their name for you. They have over wintered here for at least three years.

or taking off?

I've done a few photo books and the number of pages you have depends on the size of your photos and how large you want them. One per page or groupings of certain species?

I used Apple's iBooks because it worked better with my Mac, but there are so many websites creating them now. I use mpix to print my photos. Good prices and great quality. I made some of the little books that I gave to my family. They loved them.

@snoopydawg The mergansers like to dive, come back up and then flap their wings, presumably as if to wring the water out of their feathers, is what this one was doing. I haven't seen them out there for a couple days now, so they might have migrated.

I was thinking one photo per page; not sure how big I'd want it to be either. My first thought was self-publishing through Amazon, but eff Amazon and Bozo.

Tell Charlie happy birthday for me!

It's very easy to make your own book. Just look at some templates on various websites and go from there. You can play with the books online and try different ways of creating one without having to buy it first. Check out mpix and see what you think. I posted the link in my comment.
