There are a couple fallen Sycamore leaves so it must be fall. The butterfly is an Arizona Sister, a lookalike close relative to the California Sister. The near wing is reflection.
This is a Black Setwing (dragonfly)
Lark Sparrow, one of our prettier sparrows
(Southern) Oak Hairstreak - live-oaks are the larval foodplant
Either a female or imm. male Blue Dasher dragonfly
ya can't look at too many male Painted Buntings for too long, impossible. This little piggie has white millet seed husks on his bill.

Dragonflies are big skeeter eaters, so you should consider them your friend. They can't bite unless when handling you put your finger between the jaws of bigger types. There is no stinger, the terminal claspers are for mating only. P.S. love yer Monarch shots!

they would sew your mouth shut? Or is that just a Utah thing? We would swear at them and then put our hands over our mouths. Okay. I was 4. I still laugh when I see them.
Love the lil bird. So colorful.

@snoopydawg
I have heard a couple versions of this myth that dragonflies can sew your lips shut. One group of dragons was stupidly named Darners. Green Darner is one of the most widesperad common dragons in America. I am not sure which came first, myth or name, but presume it was the 'old wives tale' of them sewing lips closed. They should have stuck with the cool names, like Pondhawk, River Cruiser, Skimmer, Dasher, Snaketail, etc., but Darner? It feeds the myth.
The most common version of the myth, and I think most widespread is that If you tell a lie, they will sew your lips shut. The one for doing such based on swearing predominates in the most puritanical areas. Or something like that. Amazing how people took something that is actually very beneficial component in the ecosystem, not to mention fascinating and beautiful, and demonized it to a point that many people are afraid of dragonflies. Probably those that lie and swear most? As we have done with sharks, snakes, and spiders.

You are a fount of knowledge. Thanks. I wonder who it was that told us kids that would happen if we swore? Heh. I felt so brave doing that. There were about 10 of us that spent our nights swearing at them.

They are the coolest insect around and skeeter eating is a bonus. I found one perched on a trail bridge railing near a waterfall and lost about twenty minutes of my life just staring it it.
"Welcome back from the Land of Fey," said the waterfall when I resumed my hike.

If they're hovering in one's personal space, it might well be because their prey are also hovering in one's personal space.
Dragonflies are without doubt the coolest of all insects. If they were smart like dogs, we'd have domesticated them.

I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
The cemetery built this 3 years ago and there are 3 bridges over the little creek with pagodas, a rock stream with a pond and benches. The grass wasn't quite that yellow though, but I wanted to show that area of the cemetery. I see different things in the tree every time I walk by it. I still don't know what the Pogonip is?

When finally the forecast changes from "Hot. Dry. Smoke." to something remotely livable. I don't like in a hot climate . . . people used to come visit our neck of the Pacific Northwest for the glorious summers brought on by eight months of drizzle. Now they come for the trendy $3000 rents and fashionable three hour commutes. But at least we're not a red state . . .
While in Boston for grad school, I really loved the fall colors. Nothing like it. Didn't mind the winter--just bundled up and enjoyed the snow. Summer, a humid mess, I hated, but I guess I should have gone farther north, like Nova Scotia. (Fewer Trumps there as well!)
