Life is a series of risks. Trust, and you’ll sometimes be hurt. Love, and someone will die. Life is joy and pain. If you don’t risk the pain, you lose out on the joy.
― Mary Alice Monroe, The Long Road Home

I figure, the budget and I are just about exhausted by now. The plan is to be home by the middle of next week.

I hope I do not burn out on re-entry.

And I am able to reintegrate.

It could be a rough acclimatization.

I think, therefore something, something, …

That about covers it.

Have a great weekend! The thread is OPEN.

Hope your travels are going swimmingly!

We’re finally getting rain. It’s greening up around here. Makes it easy on the eyes - actually makes it easy on the mental health!

Have a beautiful day and weekend, folks! Pleasantry

As California Burns
Carr fire sweeps into Redding; 1 dead, homes destroyed

REDDING —The Carr fire in Shasta County erupted Thursday night into a conflagration that swept over the Sacramento River and into Redding’s city limits, killing one person and sending residents fleeing for their lives as flames spread into neighborhoods of rolling hills in the western part of the city.
...
Cal Fire said a private bulldozer operator had been killed during the blaze, but gave no other details late Thursday. The fatality was the second this month reported as firefighters attacked blazes the length of California.

RIP private operator #2.

Another tweeted that evacuations were causing Redding to look “like a zombie outbreak right now.”

"That's the system" /rimshot

Social media reports said that the area of Keswick Dam and Quartz Hill northwest of the city was fully engulfed in flames, with multiple homes and structures burning and many people trapped and unable to drive out of the area due to congestion.

The order was so immediate that traffic is completely stopped on some roads that lead out of the city. Traffic is completely stopped at North Market Street in both directions “at least up to Lake Blvd,” said Redding Record Searchlight reporter Jenny Espino in a tweet.

Animal evacuation centers were being set up. Owners of large animal are encouraged to go to Redding Rodeo Grounds; owners with small animals can go to Haven Humane.

How depressing. Disaster strikes and nobody comes, there aren't enough resources, I don't why. Billions "invested" in a Rainy Day fund instead. fuck that shit

--- et tu BFH
The other day I saw the biggest effing helicopter I've ever seen, it flew right over my head as it thundered down the flightway that follows HWY 101. It was going south, and I heard it coming at least 30 seconds before it appeared, had time to go out on the deck and wait until it came over. 72 foot wingspan, whoa. I found it immediately on the wiki:

An Erickson S-64 making a water drop

General characteristics
Crew: 3 (pilot, co-pilot), plus one engineer or rear-facing observer
Capacity: up to 5 total persons
Payload: 20,000 lb (9,072 kg)
Length: 70 ft 3 in (21.41 m (fuselage))
Rotor diameter: 72 ft 0 in (21.95 m)
...

YUGE. Too bad California has no publicly owned fleet of modern air tankers, how unfortunate to go up in flames while billions sit around in the budget waiting for a rainy day. How stupid.

@eyo

Are you in Guerneville or close to it? I'm sure that area is due for a burn too. This is what our money and military should be going towards. Fighting the huge fires and clearing forests of dead wood. California forests have been decimated by the pine beetle and is a fire hazard in waiting. Of course they're going to get totally out of control with all the dead trees, high temperatures, low humidity and drought.

Anyone know if it's better to let them burn and try to contain them or try putting them out? Or do they try to put them out? Or is there a difference? And are there enough people fighting them? I'd think that less than 4,000 people fighting huge fires is definitely not enough.

Is anyone knowledgeable about this to answer my questions? Utah is also on fire and our air quality is horrible.

@snoopydawg @snoopydawg thanks for thinking about me. Guerneville is south west, closer to the coast. Cloverdale is the most northern city of Sonoma county, over the hill is Mendocino. We are right on the Russian River, vineyards as far as the eye can see. Add sawmills, gravel pits, and beer wells... the watershed killers, that is Cloverdale. Also the fbi fink that bombed Judi Bari lives near here, it is the stinking crotch of Sonoma County, a real shit hole of NPP Conserva-Dems but I digress...

Last night I was walking the dog around 8pm and I could hear Shiny Ribs playing in the downtown Plaza, and half the sky was covered in smoke from the River Fire. No worries, it seems pretty clear right now at 3am Saturday morning, I can see stars up in the sky and I can't smell smoke. And it is not windy, that is key to survival now, apparently.
Fires break out near Potter Valley and Hopland

The River Fire was reported at 1:01 p.m. Friday and quickly burned 20 acres, with 0 percent containment. By 4:30 p.m. Friday, the River Fire had grown to 500 acres, Cal Fire reported.

I guess tweets are the only place for CalFire current updates, and they only stream press conferences on Facebook now?. I'd rather die in a fire than live like an idiot.

Rather than freakout in fear and disgust, I am trying to stay calm and cool, and sending all my good energy waves to the unprotected people (homeless) and the wildlife. No shelters for them, no breathable air, sorry.
Edit: add link to Cal Fire Forestry Practice, might answer your questions. Trees are Lumber for the land owners. "That's the system."

be home before you know it, and, like every other day, it will be different because change is perpetual. Slow waking up here today. The music helps, thank you. The more time I spend getting organized the more chaotic it gets and o road trip in sight. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

Hope you get a good respite when you get home. Last night had Judo and pushed myself harder than I usually do, and it felt SOOOO good to hit the hay after a shower and a bowl.

And some fun music to set the day.

Take it easy and stay cool and safe on the ride home. Eyo: how bad is the Redding fire? Lordy, it's up near the OR border. Is there any part of CA that hasn't been impacted by climate change? Glad to hear the good news from NM, RA. Smile Our WA State run was a good one. Hubby flew out with a cold so we skipped Canada. We got him some meds, and then a minor part on my lower jawbone fractured. Funsies. It's fixed now. Trip still was worthy. Seattle is in a class by itself with its natural beauty. Cascades had snow on them--way cool!! I hope the folks in Seattle will lower the boom on the greedballs and keep development way under control unlike the statewide disaster that is Floridumb! Rec'd!!

Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.

@orlbucfan thanks, now the LA Tronc (rhymes with plonk) Times has an article up.
Redding fire nearly doubles in size; 2 dead, including a firefighter, as countless homes are destroyed

A destructive wildfire nearly doubled in size overnight, killing at least two people — including a city firefighter — and burning numerous homes in Redding as residents ran for their lives and firefighters found it impossible to battle the wall of flames.

The Carr fire killed at least one person and destroyed an untold number of homes in Shasta County in Northern California, hopscotching into subdivisions Thursday night and Friday morning. Officials said hundreds of homes were threatened as winds pushed the fire into the community.

It was a chaotic scene across Redding, a city of 90,000 people, as towering flames whipped along the horizon and evacuation orders expanded by the hour in the middle of the night.

sounds familiar

“This fire is extremely dangerous and moving with no regard for what’s in its path,” said incident Cmdr. Bret Gouvea with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The blaze had grown to 44,450 acres and was 3% contained Friday morning, Cal Fire said.

good luck

Without having to give up all the data about ourselves to the corporations that are selling stuff to us. I just got a coffee from Peet's coffee. They keep hassling me to get a rewards card, but to do that I have to give them my phone number and email. Why??? I just want a damn cup of coffee. I appreciate discount offers of getting an 11th cup of coffee free (except at Peets, the cheapskates make you get 15 cups of coffee before you get your free cup), but being manipulated into giving up my personal data to Peet's (and who knows who else), is a huge cost that they're not telling me about. Just give me a damn punch card and punch it every time I get a coffee. Sell me the product that I want for the price you're advertising period. Nothing else should be involved in the transaction. And then I try to go online using Peet's wifi and they're playing those same data gathering games again. F**k em and all data gathering corporations.
