The Logos of Hades
Beyond the dark rivers, upon my shadowed shore,
do the men of Troy set their feet and whisper hushed fears
that they are soon to pass into my realm,
And upon stepping upon my threshold, they do meet my hound.
And he barks, happily, for he knows that my guests have arrived.
The fangs sharp and glistening, relax into a lop eared grin,
and the affection of scent, familiarity and warmth run to greet
the weary traveler, with feet coated with clay and sand.
Come into my hall, sons of Troy. Set your head upon a cushion.
For it is now yours, and I share what bounty I have,
with those that have paid fairly the ferryman.
Worry not of what is to come tomorrow, for now you rest.
Come too, sons of Greece. Come Achilles, for while the fields beckon,
they are a lonely place, full not of your fellow man but of shades of heroes.
And heroes are a greedy lot, who abuse my animals, and rob my halls.
Not only my halls, but yours too, should you put down your glory to seek them.
Listen to the songs. Hear the music. For Orpheus is here with his beloved.
See the games, feel the heat, for what we have there is of our own deeds.
Learn, love, and be, for the shades of man and woman are still human.
And I, whose lot determined my station, am content with such pleasures.
Many have started the journey to my halls, with naught but the arms looted
from the still smoldering battlefield. Perhaps they'll find a money changer
upon the path to turn such things to the coin that many here have robbed
from the treasuries and purses of the Troy that was.
For those who have not, I send my animals to aid their journey.
A bird to lighten the steps. A fly to wake the mind.
A dog to snarl and hasten the reluctant traveler upon his path.
And a rat, to seek the small and hidden gifts that have been thrown by the wayside.
Come to my library, for no knowledge that is mine shall be denied the shade.
Work free from your life's imperfections, for we have all eternity before us,
and it is a quick and light thing to pay the debts of life.
In time, even the worst thirst shall be slaked and all wicked kings shall be kind.
Forgive my melancholy. My wife is to return to the earth once more,
paving the road to my home as she goes, a single stone at a time.
Easier and quicker the road becomes as she works, and the halls echo
with the workmen who build for the new arrivals.
I do not dream of a time when all will be mine, for where would come the new songs?
Each guest upon my doorstep is welcome for their life is a new tale for the throng.
And we hear them all, so often. The same refrains again and again.
As time grows on they become the same, and I groan at the repetition.
Oh men of Greece and Troy, I pour a cup for you all and place it upon my table.
Sup, and as you find your refreshment tell me of your story,
Tell me not of the stories of great heroes, for that I can hear any day.
For all are heroes in their own dreams.
Be welcome.

I admit that I'm scared of death.
And this is my way of dealing with it.
It's a lot more hopeful than Hades is usually portrayed, but I once again am going with the theme that EVERYBODY is the good guy in their own mind.
The Disney version grated on me. Especially after James Woods revealed that he's a conservative asshole who doesn't care about others.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
As both Heaven and Hades are a continuation of what we do here,
I imagine this is a rather accurate portrayal of the afterlife for most.
Make yourself comfortable. It's going to be a long stay, wherever you end up.
I admit I borrowed a little Christian imagery for this...
Of course, in Mythology he's portrayed much differently than our modern interpretations. He's usually a bit more stern than other gods, so I felt that it was important to address that aspect of his personality as well as the welcoming host.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

I am not afraid of dying, but don't want to ...
If it is some old religious BS making you afraid of it, read Matthew 25. You do all of that good stuff. Love is all that matters.
But, I don't want to leave the earth or my family just yet.
Loved this poetry as all the others. Have to go back read one I missed.

Oh I admit to it.
Still a Cynic, and Agnostic, but not a militant one.

I define god as . . .
"the energy life force of the universe." Whatever that is.
So . . . I have watched some family members die. One moment they are alive, the next they are dead. However, the chemical composition of their bodies is basically the same. The "life force" left. Where did it go? Scientifically, isn't it true that energy never goes away, it just changes form?
I can't go past that. No hell for sure. And, what the hell is heaven? But it seems like the life force continues. But I don't know what that means.
And life is everywhere. It is beautiful and full of love.
That I know for sure. Nothing else.

I'm almost tempted to take the position
Of course, down that path lies the Unitarians, and even they are too rigid in dogma for my taste.
So I'll speak a public word of thanks to the Muses and for the Gods of the Greeks for their divine guidance upon my poetic soul.
And then I'll just bang out another one tomorrow, because it's Wonderfully Fun.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
everyone is right
Yeah ...
Looking forward to the next...

"And what the Hell is Heaven"?
Good one Marilyn. Lol.
To me, Heaven is a place where there is no more pain.
Or sorrow. Or hunger. Or want.
A place where mine enemies can no longer harm me.
And I will remain there forever, for eternity.
Some people call it Heaven, I call it oblivion.
Peace.

I like that too

Enjoying the Hades out of your essays, DMW
Keep those cards and letters comin'.
I'll admit, some of it I have to re-read once or twice to get the full meaning.
Prose is not my strong point. But it's easier than Old English.
Thanks for all of it.

The New one Is up in Community Content.
I am actually really surprised how easy these keep coming, and how one seems to naturally flow into the next. Course, I also have some dream castings on this. For this piece in particular, I'd love the part to be played by Mark Meer, who's a Canadian Improv and Voice Actor whose career I've loved for years. He can get across gravitas and lightness, which is what I'm aiming for here.
