A HUGE win for progressives

Joe Crowley is the fourth most powerful Democrat in the country, and he's never been primaried before now.
Ocasio-Cortez is only 28, has never held a political office before, and she's a socialist.
This photo is from Nov. 14, 2017. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, was then working as a bartender.
Less than a year later, she defeated the likely next Speaker of the House, and will almost certainly be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress pic.twitter.com/JgHjdQWAF6

In other words, she's the polar opposite of Crowley.
Also, Ben Jealous is a Bernicrat.

Bernie in heels ?
the idea that she would campaign for HRC is mindblowing.
if she starts expressing concern about Russia....
NOOoooooooo...
edit. check the CNN clip just below at 6:30. She said it, all right.
jeez Louise, my stomach hurts.
Lol.
Weird how she gets labeled
a socialist and the left just runs with it without even knowing the deal. Robots.
Relative to that lost information on foreign policy, it was just the same progressive lip service that actually serves to perpetuate the false narratives of the war of terror.
i dunno.
i just went hunting for the cnn video. dunno how to characterize it, really, but admittedly i was schmoozed by her to a degree cuz she looks like my (now in spirit) cousin joan whom i loved witless'. 'yes, indict trump over the emoluments clause', someone on the tweet above said she'd reckoned russia's interference in our election, but then jill stein raised money for recounts based on that rubbish.
anyhoo, i got so many other things to do today; but here's the video. adorable and...
what was it ed asner'd said about mary tyler more's character? just bingle it: "spunky"!
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npim1JZDDkA]
we can debate about socialism vs. reform capitalism
but there is no excuse for what she said at 6:30.
yeah, i'd heard it too.
a good democrat© w/ democrat values. i ust spent way too long on the subtweets under sameera kahn's tweet cuz i'd thought i'd remembered something about 'russia'.
@kay41981 Jun 27
Replying to @SameeraKhan ‘And why, in answering a question about Russian meddling did she acknowledge that Russia meddled when it didn't? That was a definitive moment for me. No thank you’
where or when she answered the Q isn't specified, though. some said she'd also scrubbed net neutrality from her platform, dunno, and that she took 5 grand fro move.on, but no evidence. and whatever this means:
@stevenfriare · Jun 27
Replying to @SameeraKhan
'She's a solid progressive but she retweets the billionaire hedge fund manager Tom Steyer. People need to get real. Fundamental change is NOT going to come from the Democratic Party ever.'
was that about her (eyo: 'word salad on housing') w/ accompanying buzzwords maybe? i dunno who steyer is.
Romney won the GOP nomination in Utah
Gee what a surprise. Not. He's replacing Borin Orrin Hatch who said during his first campaign 33 years ago, "what do you call a congress member who has been in congress for two terms? You call him home and if I win I won't spend more than two terms in congress."
People remind others that he said that every time he ran again, but people still kept sending him back for another term. And another and another and another .......... Oh well at least he is finally leaving!
Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?
Uh! Joseph was a legal resident of Bethlehem
not an immigrant. That's why he had to go there for the great Roman census.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph
...... were homeless refugees when they fled to Egypt to evade Herod's decree ordering the deaths of all boys Jesus' age.
Much like many of today's migrants who flee tyrannical governments at home.

One day soon we'll knock off the Mighty Congo.
Matt Stoller has a great Twitter thread on Crowley's donors
who lost tonight.
This thread that is 10 tweets long is just a partial list of his donors which shows how he is beholden to his donors instead of the people he is supposed to be representing. It's amazing to see how many companies buy each member's service. And he is just one of how many representatives in the country who put their donors before their constituents. This has been a problem in this country for how long?
Was Humpty Dumpty pushed?
Great, thanks for sharing that. Still have

I actually did that one trying to be funny.

Something interesting about the NY 14 Race
Here's an interesting little fact that kind of puts things in perspective:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez FEC Filings
She raised $312,881.78. With 98% of the precincts reporting she has gotten 15,897 votes.
Joe Crowley FEC filings
Joe Crowley raised $3,366,094.96 and so far has gotten 11,761 votes with 98% of precincts reporting.
If you do the math, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent roughly $19.68 per vote and won.
Joe Crowley spent roughly $286.20 per vote... and lost.
From one of the articles that I read last night:
The people won this one.
I'll bet she had a ground game.
Volunteers going door to door especially in their own neighborhoods are much more effective than dumb expensive repetitive 30 second TV ads.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Who is going to be her coaches/staff/mentors?
The machine politicians have ready-made staff with history, knowledge of the games playes and how rules really work in Congress.
Who is going to help this newbie? She is going to need some strong support up close and daily if she is going to make a dent in the Democratic machine.
Winning the race is just the beginning.

Pick a task force, probably D-Progressive Caucus
Energy and Environment, which is why we save redwoods before people I guess. Oh yeah, and no oil drilling off the coast! But fracking is grreat, and so are freeways full of cars! But No Camping allowed! No loitering, no standing. Just NO.
my Rep., being Jared Huffman is onHuh I learned there's a force called Equal Protection, I wonder what they are tasked with? I hope it's not the 14th amendment clause thingy because well... Ds failing upward is getting quite tiresome as non-white people get murdered by cops every damned day of the week, and twice on Sunday. All things being equal, the Progressive Caucus is not.
peace
Uh... actually it's a little over twice every day.
Sorry to spoil a good line.
On to Biden since 1973
I'll add in a few additional
I'll add in a few additional points:
1) Her story is inspiring - a young bartender rising up to defeat the NY machine. She is 28 (I'm 27), so seeing my peers jumping up is great to see.
2) Being a DSA is OK I feel if this was say the 1970's or 1980's. We're at a stage in human development, not only with our economic system, but also with our impending environmental collapse, that we need a RADICAL departure from our current paradigm of thought. Chaining yourself to the Democratic party, which will slowly warp and change you, is killing your own ideals.
3) I have no idea what her stances are on American imperialism, which, as Al often points out, often goes unspoken in our climate.
4) I know it is somewhat easy to snipe from the armchair (or this case computer chair). Actually running for a seat somewhere is a whole different ball game. I can only imagine what I would do if I had to run a campaign. Whether run as a Green, or Independent, or Socialist Party (not certain on the exact wording). But I couldn't prop myself up in the duopoly, which is opposed to everything I believe in.
perfection is NOT a human condition

Criticize all you want, but she is a move in the right direction. There are no perfect human beings. Perhaps she will end up being corrupted by TPTB, but I'm going to wait till she screws up before I'm critical. I for one am supportive and hopeful.
That said, I think we have to re-invent this nation for real reform. Can that happen from within the system? I doubt it. However I'm an ally of all who work for the issues I think are important.

I wonder if working as a bartender didn't give her

Congratulations to Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.
Now, what folks who live and vote in her district need to do is make it clear to her and her expanded staff that you expect her to get behind a non-interventionist foreign policy. Call it a Peace and Justice plan, for example. Go to her events, take a sign if she is not taking questions, contact her staff, write letters to newspapers or get on whatever social media is most read in your district.
1. Point out that the social policies she is calling for, which we all badly need, cannot be afforded if we do not scale back our imperial pretensions.
2. We all know that Wall Street, the DCCC, and AIPAC, among others will be calling her. Offering money, and, oh by the way, we have a couple of good people for your new staff. And so on. Come out to Vulgar Mansion in the Hamptons; some people want to meet you.
3. Don't forget that inexperienced staff members are often unfortunately but quite understandably vulnerable to the lure of patronage by Important People.
4. So, if she and staffers don't hear from future constituents, starting NOW, they may well conclude that said constituents don't really care very much about war and peace.

Peace and Justice Plan
This!
And therefore don't care about much of anything else, as war and peace pretty much dictates what handling all other priorities get in this country.

Mr. Levi Tillerman lost badly out in CO,
which shows that not all voters are fooled by that silence on foreign policy combined with progressive empty promises on domestic matters line.
It looks like Feinstein might be on her way out. About time.

I can't feel but we will fuck it up
Already at other, nameless sites Ocasio-Cortez is being viewed through partisan lenses, celebrated for her color, nationality, youth, gender, sex, experience. Woe to those who can't wave the flag hard enough for each category. Then there is the backhanded dem machine support and the marginalizing in committee assignments to look forward to. If she sticks to her socialist bonafides she will ultimately disappoint the kindergarten crowd by not voting with the establishment dems on bills that will hurt her constituents (that are hurt enough already), of not being strong enough on whatever filter they use to give approval. Or she votes with the dems 90% of the time on everything. I am very encouraged...happy to see this happen, but right now she belongs to a weak un established third party (that I wish were huge) in a seat that both r's and d's would like to replace with one of their own. In the end we will reject her for not being pure enough, and blame each other for it.
Bruce A. Dixon asks:
“When there's no fight over programme, the election becomes a casting exercise. Trump's win is the unstoppable consequence of this situation.” - Jean-Luc Melanchon
I strongly disagree
Seriously? A DSA member is no different than Obama?
This guy either doesn't understand basic politics, or just thinks he's being cool to be cynical.
Now someone could make the case that a few isolated DSA victories won't change things. That's believable. And if progressives can't win a whole lot more, then real change is impossible.
But that this is no different? Puhleeeze.
As for this point:
I agree with. However, people that put identity above all else don't bother to become DSA members. They stay mainstream Democrats.
Burning down the house! People are on fire to talk
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
That's a good sign
An even better sign would be concern trolls by Democrats.
I'm on the lookout for them.
Just saw one on FB.
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
In defense of cynicism
I had already been politically demexited when SF had its "Green revolution" in 2000. Their reforms lasted what? 4 years? As soon as the Greens were term limited out and the Corruptocrats took back control it was right back to business as normal.
For a movement to win it has to win more than once and it has to win with/for more than a select few people.
On to Biden since 1973
True and true
And to be honest, I believe that the current progressive insurgency will ultimately fail.
However, I'm still tickled by people trying.
Like I said the other day, an attempt at reforming the system is absolutely necessary as a first step.

This is obviously inconsistent with the endless war of USA imperialism.
Seems to be clear signal as to her orientation on foreign policy.
Not that hard to find either.
thx.
edit. but see comment above by wendy davis- "i suppose it wasn't surprising.."
was this plank removed at some point in campaign?
So we just quit?
And spend our time on line crabbing about how the world isn't perfect?
No thanks. I'd rather work for a better world for my (future) great-grandchildren. My grandchildren have already been screwed by the corporate Dems and Right-wing crazies.
The Perfect is the enemy of "A whole lot better than what we've got".

"I'm irate!"
Here's what Dixon said:
He's asking why we feel so sure that electing one Congressmember, a Democrat no less, is going to be such a dramatic success when, in the past, it didn't quite turn out that way. I fail to see why this counts as any advocacy of quitting, or "the Perfect," or (to use gjohnsit's phrase) "concern trolling."

now eric london at wsws.org
had written on june 6:
"In reality, Barack Obama deported 2.7 million people, more than any other president, and his administration expanded the border wall and built many of the for-profit prisons currently housing immigrant children, literally paving the way for Trump’s present policy.
Particularly significant has been the response of Senator Bernie Sanders. Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” program, Sanders volunteered that he had voted to fund Trump’s border wall.
When asked directly if he was in favor of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agency that is overseeing the Gestapo-like attack on immigrants, Sanders gave a deliberately evasive answer, declaring: “I think what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration in a rational way. … What we need is Trump to sit down with members of Congress and work on a rational program which deals with this serious issue.”
zo...miz ocasio-cortez is more radicule than her mentor. but no her extended platform never mentions war nor imperialism. 'create a green new deal' in 2018 kinda made me chuckle given how baked in the sixth extinction is already, COP paris included.
If you abolish ICE

rarely exhibited by the man as he responded to a journalist's question of what he thought of Cortez's victory.
Another view
Crowley's Queens-Bronx district includes Archie Bunker's old neighborhood, but the old neighborhood ain't what it used to be. Today NY's 14th Congressional district is roughly 50% Latino and 25% "other minorities". Crowley wasn't/isn't a bad representative for his district; it's just that times have changed.
Basically, the claim is that she won because of her ethnicity and not policies. Another victory for Demographics Is Destiny.
Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ben Jealous is an extremely privileged California Democrat
And I personally went to school with the man, so this is one I know a little something about. He attend a California Private School (York School, Monterey CA) as one of the only African American attendees. He's mixed race, and made a big deal about that fact in school, but seems to have completely forgotten that for political purposes.
He's been a professional activist for his entire career. Nothing against the man, because I know he's a nice and kind person, but he's never really worked a day in his life. He's done a lot of "Show" work, but he's never feared for a meal.
So yes, he's a nice guy who maybe will push for a few bits of legislation that will help his group. That group is Rich Californians. '

More and Better Democrats
I heard that phrase somewhere ... but it was never clear to me how the newly incumbent not-better Democrats would somehow be replaced by better Democrats down the road. Maybe it was supposed to be "way down the road", after they had spent a long career soaking up corporate cash and selling out the 99%, unless of course some new not-better Democrat wanted their seat and that road just gets extended.
Maybe "Better Then More Democrats" is a better approach.
I for one welcome our new young Latina overlords.
