It’s Been Ten Years. It’s Time To Admit Bernie Sanders Was Wrong.
Everyone’s talking about how progressive Democrat Graham Platner has been forced to drop out of his Senate race following allegations of sexual assault. Personally I never paid attention to Platner’s campaign, because I long ago stopped taking Democrats seriously.
The first clue that Platner was a shitty person wasn’t his military service or his Blackwater stint or his tattoo or the sexual assault stuff, it was that he ran for high office in the US government under one of America’s two mainstream parties. That’s damning in and of itself.
I said this on Twitter today and some DSA guy told me the best way to make changes in US politics is to work within the Democratic Party to elect left-wing candidates and advance progressive agendas.

I mean, how much longer is it going to take before people admit that the “change the party from within” strategy isn’t working? Do you want another twenty years? Another fifty? Do you need to spend the next century watching a handful of vaguely progressive imperialists getting elected to Congress and then getting primaried out by opponents with mountains of special interest funding before you admit that you’re not making any meaningful gains? Our planet could be lifeless before then.
The Bernie Sanders “revolution” was ten years ago. Large factions of the American left took up his call to take over the Democratic Party using primary elections throughout the nation, and ever since then it’s been a two-steps-forward, two-steps-back addition of zeros. The people never got President Bernie, and the few progressive gains made on Capitol Hill were either kicked out like Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman or went full pro-establishment like John Fetterman. The few who stuck around have turned out to be perpetually disappointing empire managers like AOC, who know how to straddle the line between left-wing lip service and status quo swamp monster.
It’s time to admit the commies were right, kids. The factions on the so-called “far left” who’ve been rejecting electoral politics and calling for real revolution against a system designed to suppress leftward movement have been completely vindicated over the last decade. You cannot change the system using a political party that is designed to prevent change.

The Atlantic has an article out by David Brooks titled “Democrats Became Great by Fighting the Left,” and in a sense this claim is absolutely correct. It’s not correct in the sense that David Brooks suggests, but it is correct that the reason the Democratic Party has been allowed to remain so dominant is because it is such an effective tool for thwarting all leftward political movement in the United States.
In the article, Brooks (who last year published an article titled “The Epstein Story? Count Me Out” shortly before showing up in the Epstein Files) begins by rehashing the same tired old Hillary 2016 talking points arguing that the loony left is full of communists who must be forcefully opposed by the sensible center. What’s more interesting is the brief history lesson that comes later, in which Brooks notes that after World War II the Democratic Party leadership took action deliberately “in order to block the leftward advance” toward socialism within its ranks.
That’s all the Democratic Party has ever existed to do. If it wasn’t such a successful tool for suppressing leftward advancement, the party would not be permitted to exist as a mainstream political force by the capitalist oligarchs who run the country.
It is the Democratic Party’s job to prevent peace, equality, justice and socialism. That’s the only reason it is permitted to exist in the hub of the capitalist empire, and that is the only reason why ten years of effort to change the party from within has produced no meaningful results.
The experiment has been run, and the results are in. You can’t conduct a socialist revolution using a party whose primary function is to suppress socialist revolution. This has been conclusively established.
It’s time to find another way.

US and Iran trade escalating strikes as supreme leader is buried after days-long funeral
The US and Iran traded retaliatory strikes on Thursday as US president Donald Trump threatened to escalate the conflict unless Iran stopped attacking ships in the strait of Hormuz. Iran responded to the latest round of attacks by targeting US-allied Kuwait and Qatar and accused the US of striking near its sole nuclear power plant.
The second consecutive day of tit-for-tat strikes came hours before Iran buried former supreme leader Ali Khamenei in his home city of Mashhad. Khamenei was killed in US and Israeli airstrikes this February at the outbreak of the war. Khamenei’s funeral procession reached the country’s holiest shrine with a huge crowd packing the courtyard, some bearing banners denouncing the US president and reading, “We Will Kill Trump.”
The renewed attacks on Thursday were the largest since Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 17 June aimed at extending the ceasefire and giving space for negotiations for a permanent truce. Washington was still committed to finding a resolution with Iran and “technical talks continue”, a US official told Reuters, even as president Trump declared the truce was “over”.
In Iran, officials said strikes targeted the perimeter of Iran’s only civilian nuclear plant in Bushehr province, an area where the UN’s nuclear watchdog has previously warned that attacks could “pose a very real danger to nuclear safety ”.
“Several areas in Bushehr province were targeted today, including the perimeter of the nuclear power plant, a military base in the town of Choghadak and a fishing pier in the south of the province,” said Ehsan Jahanian, the deputy governor of Bushehr, adding there were no reports of casualties so far. After the strikes, the US president posted videos of explosions in Iran and threatened the country once again.

Iran Targets US Bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Jordan Following Major US Airstrikes
Iran’s military on Thursday launched attacks on US bases across the region following a second round of major US airstrikes against Iran, as the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding to end the conflict has collapsed.
According to Iran’s PressTV, the Iranian army initially launched a “massive barrage” of kamikaze drones targeting a Patriot missile system in Kuwait, a satellite antenna for early warnings in Qatar, and fuel depots belonging to the US military in Bahrain.
Later on Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had targeted US military bases in Jordan using 10 ballistic missiles, calling it a “second wave” of retaliation for the US strikes.
IDF accused of ‘field execution’ of Palestinian driver bringing aid into Gaza
A Palestinian driver bringing food aid from the World Central Kitchen (WCK) into Gaza has been killed by an Israeli soldier “in a field execution”, according to witnesses and the local truckers’ association, which said it may suspend operations in protest. Ahmad Esleem was shot in the head on Wednesday when an aid convoy stopped because of a breakdown to one truck soon after entering Gaza, according to three accounts. Israeli soldiers ordered the drivers to dismount and one of them shot Esleem in the head when his hands were raised.
Another driver in the four-truck convoy, Diaa Mansour, said the shooting happened on the Philadelphi corridor, a military road on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip. “After the truck broke down, we waited for authorisation to get out and inspect it, because every movement we make has to be coordinated in advance,” he said. “While we were waiting, an Israeli military vehicle arrived. The soldiers ordered Ahmad and me to get out of our trucks, and then they ordered another driver, Alaa Shaat, to get out as well. The driver at the front of the convoy, Fares Muheisen, remained inside his truck and didn’t get out.
“They made us stand by the side of the road. They ordered me to take off my clothes and forced me to sit under the sun. Then they brought Ahmad out of his truck. One of the soldiers began talking to Ahmad while he stood with his hands raised. Ahmad did not speak Hebrew, and it seemed the soldiers did not understand his Arabic. Suddenly, they shot him. He was hit in the head and died at the scene. It appeared they were trying to find out why we had stopped, but they did not understand the situation and opened fire immediately, without any discussion or attempt to communicate.”
Jihad Esleem, the deputy head of the Association of Transport Companies in Gaza and a distant relative of the victim, said that Wednesday’s convoy had been “100%” coordinated through the UN World Food Programme and the WCK food charity, and had just entered Gaza through the only crossing point still functioning for aid shipments.
“An Israeli officer and several soldiers approached the drivers, asked why they were there, then ordered all of them out of their trucks. They assaulted the drivers, beat them, and forced them to strip,” Esleem said. “The moment Ahmad raised his hands in surrender, one of the soldiers drew his M16 rifle and shot him directly in the head. It was a field execution and a deliberate killing of a civilian driver who had complied with all instructions. He was wearing his orange safety vest and carried all the required permits, security clearances, and coordination that had been approved by the IDF [Israel Defense Forces].”

Demolitions Continue as Israeli DM Rules Out Withdrawing From Lebanon
President Trump’s declaration yesterday that Israel wanted to withdraw from Lebanon and his prediction that this would happen soon was echoed today by Ambassador Michel Issa, who said the framework was being implemented and Israel would start once a timetable was agreed to.
They’re seemingly the only ones who think so, however, as not only has Israel repeatedly insisted they intend to stay in Lebanon (among other occupied places), but Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz felt the need to issue a statement in the wake of Trump’s comments to disavow them, insisting Israel doesn’t need anyone else’s permission to occupy Lebanon.
“We didn’t ask for anyone’s approval to enter Lebanon and we don’t need approval to stay in Lebanon. It is our right and duty to defend the residents of the Galilee and Israeli citizens,” Katz’s statement read, once again reiterating that Israel’s posture within Lebanon had not changed, which per the statements they keep issuing roughly every 36 hours, are an intention to remain.
Underscoring that, Israel continued with demolition operations in southern Lebanon, destroying substantial portions of the villages of Houla and Khiam in explosions, while shelling other parts of the Lebanese south. They further flew drones low over the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

Activist Cleared of Violent Disorder in Palestine Action Raid
A jury has acquitted an activist of violent disorder at an Israeli-owned arms factory targeted by Palestine Action in August 2024.
William Plastow, 35, was acquitted at the Old Bailey due to what presiding Judge Patrick Field said was a lack of evidence over the incident in the Filton area of Bristol.
“The prosecution has not produced enough evidence against him to show that he intended that there would be a violent disorder at Filton or that he assisted anyone to commit that offence,” Field said.
Plastow, who is from Manchester, still faces a criminal damage charge alongside seven other defendants in their ongoing trial over the break-in at Elbit Systems.
The prosecution contends that while they were not at the factory’s premises during the raid, their assistance, which allegedly included reconnaissance trips and purchasing tools, makes them “equally responsible” as those who carried it out.

Responding To Trump, Kremlin Says Ukraine’s Long-Range Drone Attacks Will Likely Prolong War
The Kremlin on Thursday responded to President Trump’s comments about Ukraine’s long-range drone attacks in Russia, which are supported by US intelligence.
At the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump acknowledged that the attacks are an “escalation” but one that could lead to an end to the conflict.
“This is a misconception. Rising tensions and further escalation cannot contribute to a peace process in any way,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
“The more strikes the Kiev regime carries out on our infrastructure facilities, the wider the security zones we will need to create. Further escalation will likely prolong the special military operation to some extent, although I cannot say by how much, and it will certainly force us to create a broader buffer security zone,” Peskov added.
Mexico investigates whether US lied about role in capture of drug lord
Mexico has launched an investigation into whether the US lied about its involvement in the capture and secretive transfer of a top Sinaloa cartel member in 2024, in what would be a potential violation of the country’s sovereignty. The US has long denied it played any role in the operation to detain the drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, a founder of the Sinaloa cartel, inside Mexico. Recent reporting by the local media outlet Pie de Nota, however, suggested that the FBI was involved in his capture.
“If recent reports are confirmed,” said the Mexico attorney general, Ernestina Godoy, on Wednesday, “then all signs point to three serious issues: a series of violations of Mexican and international law; a pact made outside the bounds of the law; and a lie told by a US diplomat, which would constitute a breach of the cornerstone principle of good faith in diplomatic relations.”
“The issue here is whether there was a violation of sovereignty,” said the president, Claudia Sheinbaum, at a news conference on Thursday. Although the incident took place under the previous administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the row comes at an extremely delicate moment in US-Mexico relations.
Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch a ground invasion in Mexico to attack the drug cartels, ratcheting up fears for Mexican sovereignty. Meanwhile, in April, reports emerged that several CIA agents had been involved in a raid on a drug lab in northern Mexico, apparently without the approval or knowledge of the federal government. Now, the potential direct involvement of a US agency in an operation on Mexican soil has again stirred fears over the presence of American operatives in Mexico.
‘Sign the Damn Bill!’ Anger at Trump Grows as US Housing Prices Hit All-Time High
With President Donald Trump still refusing to sign bipartisan legislation aimed at lowering the cost of housing, fresh outrage erupted Thursday as new data shows buying a home in the US has never been more expensive.
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) on Thursday released its monthly report on home sales showing that the median sales price of existing homes grew to $440,600, a record high.
Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the NAR, said that housing supply remains a major barrier to making owning a home more affordable.
“Progress on long-term housing affordability could be hampered if inventory growth continues to stall,” said Yun. “Without consistent gains in inventory, home prices can accelerate. It is critical to introduce more supply to the market to widen the opportunity for homeownership.”
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the US Congress last month, was designed specifically to address the housing shortage in the US.
Among other things, the bill prohibits large Wall Street investors from buying up new single-family homes, streamlines environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and creates a $200 million annual competitive grant program to benefit communities that have demonstrated success in expanding their housing supplies.
Trump, however, refused to sign the legislation, insisting that it be paired with the SAVE America Act, a voter suppression bill that will curb ballot access but Republicans in Congress do not currently have enough power to pass.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who co-wrote the housing bill alongside Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), took to social media on Thursday and pointed to a poll showing that the legislation has overwhelming support throughout the country.
“The American people have a message for President Trump,” Warren wrote. “Sign the damn bill.”
Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH), currently a candidate for the US Senate running in New Hampshire, urged Trump to finally take action.
“It’s never been more expensive to buy a home,” wrote Pappas. “I helped pass a bipartisan housing bill to bring down home prices, and I’m calling on the President to get it over the finish line.”
Trump’s illegal war of choice with Iran has also not helped the housing affordability crisis, as it has led to an inflation spike that has left the Federal Reserve with little room to lower interest rates without risking further price acceleration.

For many public colleges and universities in California, keeping their campuses safe includes owning military-grade weaponry: AR-15s, stun grenades designed to cause temporary blindness and sonic weapons that resonate so loudly they are known in the armed forces as the voice of God. According to California state law, campus police can only own military equipment if the college believes there is no other way to uphold civilian safety.
That law, which passed in 2021, also requires police to make all their equipment dealings exceedingly clear to the public. However, not every college follows every part of the law, according to an investigation by CalMatters into all 148 public campuses in the California Community Colleges, University of California and California State University systems.
Each campus’s state or district governing board – which gives permission for police to procure such items – has to annually re-approve a use policy, a chronicle of when the equipment has been used and an inventory. Once the report is approved and published online, campus police have 30 days to hold a conveniently located and “well-publicized” forum for the public to learn about and give feedback on the equipment, according to state law.
CalMatters attempted to compile the 2025 annual reports and use policies from every public higher education police department in the state that owns military equipment. Several campus police departments created reports after CalMatters’ inquiries, though the law requires the documents to be posted online as long as the equipment is usable. Not all reports or policies contained the details mandated by the 2021 law; in many cases, campuses left out information, including manufacturers’ product descriptions, up-to-date inventories and equipment quantities. The University of California board of regents approved UC Berkeley’s annual report last September, but university police only published their equipment list on 7 April, after four CalMatters inquiries.
According to their own reports, San Jose State University and San Francisco State University own AR-15s even though Cal State’s policy does not authorize this. A Cal State spokesperson, Amy Bentley-Smith, said these AR-15s are standard issue, which would exempt them from the reporting requirement, even though San Jose’s report classifies them as specialized firearms and university police departments determine which equipment is standard issue. San Francisco State’s semi-automatic rifles are standard issue and won’t be listed in the annual report going forward, university spokesperson Robert King said. [Much more at the link. -js]
Former US Olympian pleads not guilty to damaging reflecting pool amid Trump’s renovation
David Hearn, a former Olympic canoe racer, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to damaging Washington’s reflecting pool after a $14.7m renovation project. Hearn, a three-time US Olympian, was indicted last week on a single felony count of property destruction. He appeared in local superior court in Washington DC to enter the plea after he was criminally charged over the incident in mid-June.
The conflict revolves around the 2,000ft-long (600-meter) pool, a centerpiece of Washington’s National Mall, which had been refurbished with an “American flag blue” liner at Donald Trump’s request as part of the 250th anniversary celebration of US independence. The multimillion-dollar renovation has been plagued with problems, including a bloom of algae that tinted the water green and pieces of the blue lining peeling off.
The former Olympian, 67, is accused of “maliciously” breaking or destroying lining material on the bottom of the reflecting pool on 19 June. Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for Washington DC, claimed last Thursday that prosecutors had “tremendous evidence” that the Olympian had “forcefully and violently” pulled up and removed the bottom liner in the reflecting pool, totaling more than $1,000 in damage.
But answering questions from journalists, attorney Norm Eisen – executive chair of the Democracy Defenders Fund, a group campaigning on rule-of-law issues – said: “This indictment reflects the administration’s efforts to scapegoat Davey and to shift blame for their own failures … The evidence will establish, as we’ve stated today, Mr Hearn is innocent. It is not a crime to touch the reflecting pool, to touch water in the United States of America.”
The 67-year-old cyclist denied removing anything from the pool, though he acknowledged that his bike tire may have touched the hose that National Park Service workers were using to clear the algae. Hearn’s attorneys have said the charges against him are based on a “concocted narrative” and “should be alarming to every American”.
Ryan Grim DRAGGED For EXPOSING FLAWS in Platner Exposé
The news comes after Platner announced on Wednesday night that he was suspending his campaign following sexual assault allegations. But on Thursday, Maine’s department of the secretary of state said that “no official withdrawal notice has yet been received” from Platner.
“A public declaration is not an official withdrawal, and a candidate must formally withdraw to the Elections office in writing, including signature,” Jana Spaulding, Maine’s deputy secretary of state for communications, said in a statement earlier on Thursday.
Under state law, Platner has until Monday, 13 July, at 5pm ET to officially withdraw from the race, in order for Democrats to finalize an alternative Senate nominee in Maine.

Historic El Niño able to supercharge extreme weather looks increasingly likely
El Niño is strengthening and the risks of a historic event with the power to supercharge extreme weather around the world are rising, according to the latest analysis from the US National Weather Service.
Models show there is now an 81% chance that a very strong El Niño “that would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950” will develop before the end of this year, forecasters said in an advisory released Thursday. There is almost near certainty – a 97% probability – that the conditions will persist through spring 2027.
“The odds and the magnitudes just keep rising,” climate scientist Daniel Swain said in a broadcast discussion on Thursday, explaining that the conditions observed are already in record-breaking territory. “El Niño so far, for the calendar date, is as strong or stronger than we’ve ever seen before, and that is a trajectory that is expected to continue,” he added.
A super El Niño that occurred in 2015 brought severe drought in Ethiopia and water supply shortages in Puerto Rico, and smashed records after unleashing a vicious hurricane season in the central-north Pacific, according to an analysis by US federal scientists. The cycle tends to create drought and heat across Australia, around southern and central Africa, in India and in parts of South America, including in the Amazon rainforest. Heavy precipitation, meanwhile, could hit the southern tier of the US, parts of the Middle East and south-central Asia.
Licensed to drill? How a Trump-linked Texas oil company is elbowing its way into Greenland
On 10 June, a snowy-haired American in his 60s addressed the residents of a remote Greenland hamlet. He was there to tell them about a business venture supported by figures linked to Donald Trump. “So,” Robert Price said via an interpreter, “we have a project to drill for oil here.” The Texas oil company that Price represents, Greenland Energy, hopes to prove that billions of barrels of crude lie underground by bringing in 300 shipping containers of drilling kit.
“We have the permit to put the equipment on the land,” footage of the gathering in Ittoqqortoormiit shows Price saying. “And then we’ve filed our permits – pending approval – to drill.” But Greenland’s resources ministry said that contrary to Price’s claim, there were “no actually active permissions for any exploration activity or permissions for preparations for these activities”.
The dispute threatens a showdown between the Trump-linked backers of Greenland Energy and the authorities in the vast, sparsely populated territory. Trump’s lieutenants are using the prospect of an American oil find in Greenland to bolster their case for an American takeover. The US president’s special envoy to Greenland, the hard-right Louisiana governor, Jeff Landry, returned from a visit in May to declare on Fox News: “We need a deal. Greenland needs a deal. We could be – Greenland could be – exporting 2m barrels of oil a day right now.”
Landry, who says his task is to “make Greenland a part of the US”, added: “We could have those barrels on production within 10 months or so.” Greenland Energy appears to be the only company making plans to drill in the territory. Despite seemingly not yet having permission, it has chartered an Arctic-going vessel to ferry its equipment 4,000km through icy waters to Greenland’s eastern coast. Price, an energy industry veteran who has become the public face of the company, said the vessel would depart in two months, on 12 September, with drilling to begin in October. Halliburton, the giant Houston-based contractor once led by the former Republican vice-president Dick Cheney, will run the logistics.
Ever since Trump made his imperial desires for Greenland explicit, US business interests have been gaining footholds in its vast expanses. The ventures range from rare-earth minerals and hydroelectric power to bottling “luxury” spring water. Greenlanders have watched nervously as Trump has exercised US military power and toyed with doing so in the Danish territory.

it seems that each new microgeneration needs to try out the "work from within" process and sometimes they seem to make progress before the predictable denoument, perhaps that bit is a key to the democrat strategy for killing left movements. dunno.
