A HUGE win for progressives

Selection_010_1.png

Joe Crowley is the fourth most powerful Democrat in the country, and he's never been primaried before now.
Ocasio-Cortez is only 28, has never held a political office before, and she's a socialist.

In other words, she's the polar opposite of Crowley.

Also, Ben Jealous is a Bernicrat.

@wendy davis Doesn't sound like such a huge victory after all. I guess for progressives maybe that's as good as it gets.

Weird how she gets labeled
a socialist and the left just runs with it without even knowing the deal. Robots.
Relative to that lost information on foreign policy, it was just the same progressive lip service that actually serves to perpetuate the false narratives of the war of terror.

i just went hunting for the cnn video. dunno how to characterize it, really, but admittedly i was schmoozed by her to a degree cuz she looks like my (now in spirit) cousin joan whom i loved witless'. 'yes, indict trump over the emoluments clause', someone on the tweet above said she'd reckoned russia's interference in our election, but then jill stein raised money for recounts based on that rubbish.

anyhoo, i got so many other things to do today; but here's the video. adorable and...
what was it ed asner'd said about mary tyler more's character? just bingle it: "spunky"!

Gee what a surprise. Not. He's replacing Borin Orrin Hatch who said during his first campaign 33 years ago, "what do you call a congress member who has been in congress for two terms? You call him home and if I win I won't spend more than two terms in congress."

People remind others that he said that every time he ran again, but people still kept sending him back for another term. And another and another and another .......... Oh well at least he is finally leaving!

Beware the bullshit factories.

Here's an interesting little fact that kind of puts things in perspective:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez FEC Filings

She raised $312,881.78. With 98% of the precincts reporting she has gotten 15,897 votes.

Joe Crowley FEC filings

Joe Crowley raised $3,366,094.96 and so far has gotten 11,761 votes with 98% of precincts reporting.

If you do the math, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent roughly $19.68 per vote and won.

Joe Crowley spent roughly $286.20 per vote... and lost.

From one of the articles that I read last night:

“This race is about people versus money. We’ve got people. They’ve got money,” Ocasio-Cortez said throughout her campaign.

The people won this one.

I'll add in a few additional points:

1) Her story is inspiring - a young bartender rising up to defeat the NY machine. She is 28 (I'm 27), so seeing my peers jumping up is great to see.

2) Being a DSA is OK I feel if this was say the 1970's or 1980's. We're at a stage in human development, not only with our economic system, but also with our impending environmental collapse, that we need a RADICAL departure from our current paradigm of thought. Chaining yourself to the Democratic party, which will slowly warp and change you, is killing your own ideals.

3) I have no idea what her stances are on American imperialism, which, as Al often points out, often goes unspoken in our climate.

4) I know it is somewhat easy to snipe from the armchair (or this case computer chair). Actually running for a seat somewhere is a whole different ball game. I can only imagine what I would do if I had to run a campaign. Whether run as a Green, or Independent, or Socialist Party (not certain on the exact wording). But I couldn't prop myself up in the duopoly, which is opposed to everything I believe in.

Now, what folks who live and vote in her district need to do is make it clear to her and her expanded staff that you expect her to get behind a non-interventionist foreign policy. Call it a Peace and Justice plan, for example. Go to her events, take a sign if she is not taking questions, contact her staff, write letters to newspapers or get on whatever social media is most read in your district.

1. Point out that the social policies she is calling for, which we all badly need, cannot be afforded if we do not scale back our imperial pretensions.

2. We all know that Wall Street, the DCCC, and AIPAC, among others will be calling her. Offering money, and, oh by the way, we have a couple of good people for your new staff. And so on. Come out to Vulgar Mansion in the Hamptons; some people want to meet you.

3. Don't forget that inexperienced staff members are often unfortunately but quite understandably vulnerable to the lure of patronage by Important People.

4. So, if she and staffers don't hear from future constituents, starting NOW, they may well conclude that said constituents don't really care very much about war and peace.

And therefore don't care about much of anything else, as war and peace pretty much dictates what handling all other priorities get in this country.

Already at other, nameless sites Ocasio-Cortez is being viewed through partisan lenses, celebrated for her color, nationality, youth, gender, sex, experience. Woe to those who can't wave the flag hard enough for each category. Then there is the backhanded dem machine support and the marginalizing in committee assignments to look forward to. If she sticks to her socialist bonafides she will ultimately disappoint the kindergarten crowd by not voting with the establishment dems on bills that will hurt her constituents (that are hurt enough already), of not being strong enough on whatever filter they use to give approval. Or she votes with the dems 90% of the time on everything. I am very encouraged...happy to see this happen, but right now she belongs to a weak un established third party (that I wish were huge) in a seat that both r's and d's would like to replace with one of their own. In the end we will reject her for not being pure enough, and blame each other for it.

So a 28 year old Puerto Rican woman, a DSA member won the Democratic primary in a majority Latino NYC congressional district. I can understand what some people think it means. I just don't think it means what they imagine it does.

It's not that I'm unsympathetic. But her identity and affiliations are NOT real victories. We just had 8 years of a black president, NYC had a black mayor a generation ago. How'd that work out?

Over the years I helped elect "progressives" to city council, to county offices, to state legislatures and to congress. They didn't succeed in changing the Democratic party. Usually that party and the institution of elected officialdom isolated and changed them. Institutions change people more often than the other way around.

Those who are celebrating the Ocasio victory seem unable to ask, let alone answer what makes this week's any different from victories we had a generation ago, which ultimately amounted to nothing. They seem to believe nobody has ever tried this before.

what makes this week's any different from victories we had a generation ago, which ultimately amounted to nothing. They seem to believe nobody has ever tried this before.

Seriously? A DSA member is no different than Obama?
This guy either doesn't understand basic politics, or just thinks he's being cool to be cynical.

Now someone could make the case that a few isolated DSA victories won't change things. That's believable. And if progressives can't win a whole lot more, then real change is impossible.
But that this is no different? Puhleeeze.

As for this point:

But her identity and affiliations are NOT real victories.

I agree with. However, people that put identity above all else don't bother to become DSA members. They stay mainstream Democrats.

@The Voice In the Wilderness This seems to be the standard for argument, as always. There was probably no mythical period at any time in human history when people carefully examined the premises of others; it's been anger, misinterpretation, and calls to rally the faithful from the beginning.

Here's what Dixon said:

Over the years I helped elect "progressives" to city council, to county offices, to state legislatures and to congress. They didn't succeed in changing the Democratic party. Usually that party and the institution of elected officialdom isolated and changed them. Institutions change people more often than the other way around.

He's asking why we feel so sure that electing one Congressmember, a Democrat no less, is going to be such a dramatic success when, in the past, it didn't quite turn out that way. I fail to see why this counts as any advocacy of quitting, or "the Perfect," or (to use gjohnsit's phrase) "concern trolling."

had written on june 6:

"In reality, Barack Obama deported 2.7 million people, more than any other president, and his administration expanded the border wall and built many of the for-profit prisons currently housing immigrant children, literally paving the way for Trump’s present policy.
Particularly significant has been the response of Senator Bernie Sanders. Appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” program, Sanders volunteered that he had voted to fund Trump’s border wall.

When asked directly if he was in favor of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agency that is overseeing the Gestapo-like attack on immigrants, Sanders gave a deliberately evasive answer, declaring: “I think what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration in a rational way. … What we need is Trump to sit down with members of Congress and work on a rational program which deals with this serious issue.”

zo...miz ocasio-cortez is more radicule than her mentor. but no her extended platform never mentions war nor imperialism. 'create a green new deal' in 2018 kinda made me chuckle given how baked in the sixth extinction is already, COP paris included.

@wendy davis Then you might as well go back to the Open door Policy with no immigration restrictions. That would be preferable to having a law that is selectively enforced and allows corporations to hold foreign workers as indentured servants. MUCH more preferable. I think there is a solution in between, but n o law is better than a law that is ignored except when someone angers the President or a big corporation.

He's been a professional activist for his entire career. Nothing against the man, because I know he's a nice and kind person, but he's never really worked a day in his life. He's done a lot of "Show" work, but he's never feared for a meal.

I heard that phrase somewhere ... but it was never clear to me how the newly incumbent not-better Democrats would somehow be replaced by better Democrats down the road. Maybe it was supposed to be "way down the road", after they had spent a long career soaking up corporate cash and selling out the 99%, unless of course some new not-better Democrat wanted their seat and that road just gets extended.
Maybe "Better Then More Democrats" is a better approach.
