Friday Night Photos - Please Let Me Out Of Trumpistan edition

With all the dire news this week, I took a quick turn through sepia Lothlorien....

I would add the requisite Fred shot, but he's on strike.... (kibble issues).

So, a cloud shot from a few days ago instead.

If you too wish to leave Trumpistan posthaste,........ good luck!

Make mine a double.

I went on a cattle roundup a few years ago when the ranchers were corralling cows for vaccinations and the younger ones for branding and castration. I could not watch that part, but it was a blast to roundup the cows actually the humans didn't do much work. People brought their cow dawgs to do most of the work. They are so smart and I was blown away watching them doing it.

IMG_2128.JPG

The way they minded was something to see. Here they are waiting for the call to go in and get their rewards. Yup, they got to eat the things that were cut off the young males.

Thanks for hosting tonight, Bollox. Love the top photo.

@Bollox Ref

The guy in charge would just softly say, "get em up", and off they went. People drop off dawgs to his ranch and someone dropped off a very large shepherd type one. So here we've been all day moving the cows up to go through a gate. Once they got there they started turning around. Why? Because that dawg was at the head of the line doing it. He had no idea what he was doing, but boy was he having fun doing it.

They were Border Collies on the Welsh farm. Lovely dogs, and I'm not a great dog lover.

Heh, I've watched my mom castrate numerous horses in my day; theirs get thrown to the dogs too. I'm sure it's a delicacy for them!

his spare time doing sheep herding contests with his doggie. He wins lots of ribbons. Must be fun. Love the way the guy in front is looking at the guy on the horse.

I've always wanted to edit the guy in front out so that he doesn't take away from the shot, but guess I was lucky to get this one.

The only dawg I gave away was a border collie/Australian shepherd mix. I couldn't get her attention to discipline her, but I gave her to a friend who had a ranch. She loved it there.

Thank you for the varied wildlife photos. I read that the wasp can paralyse a tarantula. That's quite a sting! Thanks for showing us what to look out for. On the other hand the songs of the warblers are quite comforting.

You have such a great eye for composition. The way the shadow hits the side of the building is amusing. And the arching plant is a lovely counterpoint.

Where all are you going? I can't wait to see the photos from your travels. Guess I could always go out to Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake, but the flies are horrible this time of year.

IMG_2304_0.JPG

The lake has some great sunsets.

IMG_2303.JPG

The lake is half of its normal size which is going to be a huge problem soon. It is so involved with our weather and causes lake effect storms. Without the water in the lake our ski seasons are going to dry up with it. The water is being diverted from it for different reasons and it didn't help that the NSA built their huge fusion center here that takes 2 million gallons of water a day and then there's the new Facebook facility that is going to take much more. SMDH.

One year Ogden only received 2" of snow when I left for work in SLC and the closer I got the more snow there was. By the time I got to work there was 4' of snow. This is called lake effect.

I'm getting pretty good at photographing singing birds. I also scored four lifers this week; not a bad week!

yellow warbler

(I just wish he weren't mostly hidden by leaves. Sigh.)

dickcissel (lifer)

American redstart

My other lifers this week:
grasshopper sparrow

yellow-throated vireo

ovenbird

Not a lifer, but bird #150 on my eBird life list: eastern kingbird

Imagine my surprise and delight to see this family of hooded mergansers on our pond!

And a white admiral butterfly we saw yesterday; I can count on one hand how many times I've seen them I think.

Daenerys's picture

@janis b I shot some video of a raven arguing with some magpies back in Utah, but it didn't pick up the raven's squawk very well. I might have to fiddle with some settings.
As for the warbler, they move around so much it seems better to film them when there aren't leaves yet, as in the video you posted. They are so cute!

It is a photo of the flower of the same plant that you asked about last week, but the flower is in a different stage of blooming. It is a very odd plant. I like the sculptural nature of it. Smile
