Golden-fronted are about 99% restricted to Texas in the U.S., ranging south into Mexico at least. The eastern U.S. counterpart is the Red-bellied Woodpecker with a pale red instead of golden lower belly, and a red cap without color changes or breaks. The Southwest has a counterpart, the mostly Saguaro nesting Gila Woodpecker, mostly in AZ. The three are a very closely related group, all with zebra patterned upperparts, pale unmarked underparts, and differ in various head colors and markings.

that surround our little city, Janis. I've hiked almost to the top of the front side and have hiked up to the towers on top of Mt. Ogden
Here's a view from the west and you can see the towers.
The backside where Snow Basin is which played a huge part in the 2002 Winter Olympics and I was lucky enough to grow up skiing there before it got famous. We called it Utah's best kept secret because every one would fly in and go to the ski resorts in SLC.

Hummingbird nest, no occupants
Blew off the top of a big old walnut snag in to my friend's front yard.
Up in Willits, for off grid entertainment I used to watch the hummers pick off Coyote Brush fluff to build a nest like that. Good times.
Where's Waldo?
In a squirrel nest that sits about 30 feet from my head right now. LOL it's that darker area right in the middle behind the double wires. I watched the little pest yesterday as it gathered a giant mouthful of redwood bark across the street, then brought it right up the oak tree next to my deck. I never would have known there's a nest there, they are so sneaky. Lucky me, a new pest nest! woo hoo

I love the sound of 'hi eyo'. Thanks for the nest photos. How different they are. Here is one my daughter found over 15 years ago. It's similar to your hummingbird nest. It's the same size, and the bird is hardly bigger than a hummingbird.

I'm voting for spring green. We had an amazingly beautiful one this year and now most of the blooms have left to return next year. The lilac bushes were more full this year. I'll post some photos of some of the ones I saw next week. So many photos to choose from ...
with the little HD video camera I recently rescued/revived. All you can do is point and shoot and hope that something interesting turns up. It's fast becoming my second favourite camera. Just fun.
