Dear Washington D.C.,

Are you ok? We haven't heard from you in a while.

You've been spending a lot of time over at Mainstream Media's house, and you frankly never call or text. Hell, you could just open a window and look out, but you seem to have installed security filters on those.

Look, I know you're really Gung Ho about this new WAR(tm) you want us all to buy into, but I need to ask you a serious question here.

Did we secede and you didn't tell us? Did that whole declaration that the orange monkey wasn't our president get taken seriously?

If so, GREAT! We'd like to talk about a few things, of course.

First off, we'd like our Military back. We don't send you that much, but we'd appreciate those 5,000 or so folks released back to us.

Second, Get off our TV. We'd like to see some homegrown Cascadian programming, and we're frankly sick of your lame American Reality shows. The one with the orange monkey is particularly annoying.

Third, Stop being an asshole to Russia. Ok, YOU don't have to, but please don't scream bloody murder when we start talking to them about peace. We have a lot of Russians here, and they're pretty nice people. Don't much care for the food, but working on it.

Fourth, No you can't have any more lumber. We're gonna be talking to the Native folks about how we can best work on the land around here in a sustainable long term manner, and you're gonna have to get it approved by them first.

And finally, yes, you can still visit. Just keep in mind that it isn't your house, and we don't do things your way.

Other than that... I guess we'll see you at the UN, and don't call us, we'll call you.

@WoodsDweller Very hopeful and nice. While it was a teeny bit preachy, at least it wasn't as bad as some of the ones set in a future San Francisco I could mention...

Cascadia's time may indeed have come.

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was prevented from cutting Ponderosa Pine trees to achieve a long range goal of expanding the highway north of Sisters, Oregon a few years ago. Oops

Forest Service to cut hundreds of ponderosa pines near Sisters killed by herbicide

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comment on a plan to remove the trees, along an approximately 12-mile segment of the highway near Sisters. Forestry officials believe the trees were killed by an unhealthy dose of Perspective, the brand name of a herbicide used in the area for several years.

The herbicide, administered by contractors working for the Oregon Department of Transportation, was intended to kill the broad-leaf weeds and other flammable plants, but also killed more than 1,000 trees — the majority of which are ponderosas — in the surrounding area.

“The whole point is safety; that’s the irony of it,” said Peter Murphy, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Shell game of blame begins ODOT -US Forest Service - Independent Contractor (Jefferson County) where shall public anger be directed.

On the plus side anyone for increased development is happy - faster traffic + more people and visitor $$. That two lane highway could not be expanded because of public love of a unique grove of trees.

Yeah, it's something that does frustrate me.

@studentofearth Especially with some of the newer locals. Not trying to judge, because I'm new too, but damn I love this place, and it's the forest that is one of the reasons. Hell, if I could find a piece of land with a cliff and a forest I'd be in heaven.

Summer before last got to head out...

@Pluto's Republic and visit some friends on the coast a bit north of Tillamook.

It's really wonderful country. Gorgeous as hell, and while admittedly a bit of a rain forest, I love the rain.

@earthling1 I think I read it in '94, still have a hard cover book. I have a bunch of Starhawk (a.k.a. Miriam Simos) books. She has land in Cazadero, but now she is a world class traveling witch.

@eyo Not a book I cared for much.

Course, I'm also a cynic who believes that the MIC would have done what they do in any group which refuses to bow to power. Bribed the worst and most power hungry to keep the others in line.

My minor issue with the narrative which I wished she would have addressed. She had already set up that there was major discontent due to the system of government her protagonists had set up, and any invader would have tapped into it/offered the opposition all the riches of the earth...

nearby residents who fought to prevent them from being cut down. The city promised the residents that the trees would be spared when the parking garage was built. However, much to the city’s dismay, it appears that the trees will have to be cut after all as the construction will damage the root systems of those trees. Too bad, so sad says the city. One of the residents, an attorney, says he’ll sue the city for violating their agreement.

Once the damage is done, there is nothing left to save. It happens again and again.

Meanwhile the previous Democrat Mayor Kaseem Reid and his administration are under investigation for corruption. His protégée, Keisha Lance-Bottoms is mayor now. The current investigation has not touched her so far.
