Regarding c99% member "native".
native, who last posted here on Nov. 7, is our "ranchmate", having lived out here with us for years. On Nov. 17 he received a sudden and unexpected diagnosis of an untreatable metastasized cancer and has entered Home Hospice Care here at our home. He has declined very rapidly, is still conscious and somewhat coherent, but is mostly sleeping now.
native is at peace with his choice to refuse futile treatment and pass as quickly as he can and is in little pain or discomfort. We do not expect him to last another week.
(Update) 7:02
How fine it will be to relay these to native in the morning, when he has been most with us lately.
(Update) 7:15
I was just with native and spoke to him of all your good and kind thoughts towards him. His eyes lit up and he smiled in recognition and spoke thanks to you. I was blown away by his animation and delight and that he is still with us enough to hear you. Sadly the computer is not in his bedroom, but I think I will print out the whole thread tomorrow and read it to him.
(Update) Dec 1, 10:10am
What an amazing response from his friends here. I have printed out the (56) comment thread and will be reading it to native when he is next awake.
I appreciate all your thanks for the care native is receiving, but it has to be said that my partner, evelette, herself a cancer survivor and RN, is truly the primary caregiver and I merely serve as staff to her efforts and do what I can on the "physical plant" side of things here and provide a little muscle as needed.
(Update) 12:40 pm
native, or as we all called him here in meatspace, Lake, was awake for a while and I did indeed read him the comment thread. He listened with great interest to all your words, clearly moved to hear from you all. He heard the poetry you all sent and recognized some of your names, people he had been talking with here for years. This has meant much to him, and we thank you all for reaching out to help send him along peacefully. I wish I could share the light in his eyes as I was reading your thoughts to him. He heard you.
I will read more comments to him as they come and he is available to be with us.

He was so smart. So compassionate. So honest. Every time
he responded to one of my posts I felt a little privileged because i NEVER saw one thing of his that I disagreed with. And no matter the topic, he was never over-the-top or anything but always reasonable and rational.
He’s a total stranger (sort of) so why this makes me feel sad puzzles me in a way.

Hi claude
The link to native’s art is included in his public profile at DKos, which is where I first saw it years ago. I enjoy his artwork and his thoughts about the process. I thought linking to it would add more dimension to a person all here felt great respect for. In reality though his written communication here, presented with such clarity and insight, in such a centred and respectful way was enough to have inspired the love and respect shown him here.
Thanks Janis
That helps to see what a good guy native is. Sending peaceful, good thoughts.

And three poems that speak to me...and perhaps to you and your fine friend Claude
“If I Should Die,” Emily Dickinson
If I should die,
And you should live,
And time should gurgle on,
And morn should beam,
And noon should burn,
As it has usual done;
If birds should build as early,
And bees as bustling go,–
One might depart at option
From enterprise below!
‘Tis sweet to know that stocks will stand
When we with daisies lie,
That commerce will continue,
And trades as briskly fly.
It make the parting tranquil
And keeps the soul serene,
That gentlemen so sprightly
Conduct the pleasing scene!
One more:
"And you as well must die,” Edna St. Vincent Millay
And you as well must die, belovèd dust,
And all your beauty stand you in no stead;
This flawless, vital hand, this perfect head,
This body of flame and steel, before the gust
Of Death, or under his autumnal frost,
Shall be as any leaf, be no less dead
Than the first leaf that fell, this wonder fled,
Altered, estranged, disintegrated, lost.
Nor shall my love avail you in your hour.
In spite of all my love, you will arise
Upon that day and wander down the air
Obscurely as the unattended flower,
It mattering not how beautiful you were,
Or how belovèd above all else that dies.
and one last poem:
“Death,” Rainer Maria Rilke
Before us great Death stands
Our fate held close within his quiet hands.
When with proud joy we lift Life’s red wine
To drink deep of the mystic shining cup
And ecstasy through all our being leaps—
Death bows his head and weeps.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
The ability to hear is the last to go
My mother's passing, also with Hospice care, was a process of exceptional care and love. We brought her home for her last few days. When she arrived home and was told where she was and who was with her she smiled. She knew and understood.
Her last words had been spoken days before and her eyes had been open only briefly, sleeping almost constantly. But she was still there. Those of us with our feet firmly planted on this side of what we call life see a person transitioning at the end of their life in what looks to us to be deep sleep and assume that they are unaware. Not necessarily so. They can be very much present to their reality, both here and there, even if they appear to just be sleeping.
“ …and when we destroy nature, we diminish our capacity to sense the divine, and understand who God is, and what our own potential is and duties are as human beings.- RFK jr. 8/26/2024

I am saddened to receive this news.
I hold him in such high regard and have for years. Please pass along my love and appreciation. Thank you, claude.
This is the most beautiful poem I know about death, our common
destination:
On Death
Kahlil Gibran
You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.
In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Endless hugs to native
Whenever I have not been at my best or grieving, the only thing that ever made me feel better, sometimes much better, were wordless hugs; there are some things for which there are no words, just empathy and sympathy conveyed with a gentle hug.
Toward that end, I send native endless gentle hugs and a painless passing as soft as butterfly wings floating on sunny warm breezes.
Thank you and separate endless gentle hugs to you and to evelette for your tender care. We should all be so lucky as to have compassionate and thoughtful people nearby when it is our time to go.
