News Dump Wednesday: Socialism On The Move Edition

You already knew that Bernie is the most popular politician in America, but did you know...

UK Labour increases lead

Labour's poll lead over the Conservatives has risen to its biggest margin since the party went ahead just after the election.
Jeremy Corbyn’s party would scoop up 43% of the vote if a fresh election were held, ahead of the Conservatives on 38% - a lead that would see Mr Corbyn become Prime Minister by a slender margin.
The Survation poll for the Mail on Sunday marks a remarkable turnaround since April, when the Tories were enjoying leads of up to 24 points over Labour.
The study also found that the Labour leader’s decision to back staying in the single market and customs union in a transitional period after Britain leaves the EU is supported by 42% of voters, with 28% against.

Melenchon still on the rise

French voters view far leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon as the strongest opponent of President Emmanuel Macron, according to a new poll on Tuesday that highlights the weakness of mainstream opposition.
The Ifop-Fiducial poll showed Macron's popularity has dropped sharply since he took power in May but its key finding could help him as he embarks on reforms because polls show voters see Melenchon as too extreme to be a serious candidate for power.
The poll for Paris Match and Sud Radio showed 45 percent of voters say Melenchon's 'France Unbowed' party provides the strongest opposition to Macron.
That is more than twice the figure for the conservative Republicans (LR) or the far-right National Front (FN). Only 8 percent mentioned the Socialists.

Morena increases lead

According to a El Universal newspaper report cited by mexiconewsdaily.com, Morena dropped a point to 23% while the National Action Party lost ground, dropping four points to 19%. The governing Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), on the other hand, moved up four points to 16%.
The Democratic Revolution Party dropped from 7% to 6%.

Socialism in Illinois?

Illinois Democratic state Sen. Daniel Biss is running an uphill race for his party’s gubernatorial nomination. He faces a $21 million problem — that’s the amount Hyatt Hotel heir J.B. Pritzker, also vying for the Democratic nomination, has put into his own campaign.
But Biss is countering his capitalist opponent by picking as his running mate someone who is Pritzker’s direct opposite: a democratic socialist.
At a rally Thursday night, Biss announced that Chicago Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, would be his running mate.

Our Revolution gains ground

In an interview with Mic on the eve of Our Revolution’s first “birthday,” organization president Nina Turner said her group’s focus on empowering 401 local chapters has paid dividends in a bid to transform the Democratic party.

Our Revolution endorsed 175 candidates in the past year, about 43% of whom won their races. The group facilitated more than 11,000 volunteer-led events. It supported the elections of seven state party chairs who are “progressive,” Turner said.

unrelated feel-good story

Syrian striker Omar Al Somah became a national hero on Tuesday evening.
The 28-year-old, who has 25 goals in his last 24 league games at Al Ahli in the Saudi professional league, scored a last-gasp equaliser during Syria's World Cup qualifier against Iran. It sparked scenes of jubilation.
At 2-1 down, Syria had no hope of progressing to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, but Al Somah's dramatic goal meant Syria had done enough to make the play-offs.
A two-legged match against Australia now awaits the side in October. Win that, and Syria has booked its ticket to Russia next summer.
Al Somah's goal meant so much that a match commentator broke down in tears during the celebrations

I love soccer and used to play it in my youth. I was working at a hospital when one of the nurses asked to join the team. I said that I've never played it before and she said "that's okay, none of us have".
When the ref would call a penalty on us, we'd ask what that meant and he finally got so frustrated with us he told us to learn the rules. We lost every game, but had so much fun. And we finally won the last game of the year.
The next year we got a coach who used to play.
Awe, fun memories.

From the Sun Times, just this afternoon:

At issue are comments Ramirez-Rosa made last year about U.S. divestment from Israel. Speaking to the Real News Network, he said the U.S. government “has subsidized the oppression of the Palestinian people, and it’s time that stopped.”

“I have not heard much discussion about the relationship of the U.S. with Israel, with divesting from Israel to support the people of Palestine. Not a lot of that was discussed this weekend. And I think that’s a conversation it needs to be had,” Ramirez-Rosa said.

The IL DSA is standing behind Rosa as at the convention last month, BDS was supported overwhelmingly.

Disappointing.

@Benny

The IL DSA is standing behind Rosa as at the convention last month, BDS was supported overwhelmingly.

Disappointing.

Disappointing? Why?

BDS needs to be maintained until Israel ends its current apartheid system. Whether any like it or no, the Palestinian people exist and are entitled ti the same rights as all other human beings.

And that does not mean I want Israel destroyed, either. South Africa faced a BDS movement, did the right thing (ended apartheid), and is today a far more viable state than it was during apartheid. Israel can and should do likewise.

My position here reflects that of the Israeli left, especially the Hadash party, by the way.

If I have misunderstood your original message, please clarify. Thank You!

@thanatokephaloides and I am a member of the IL DSA. So my disappointment was that Biss wanted Rosa to reneg on his BDS stance. I'm glad Rosa stood firm.

I'm still shopping for a candidate against Pritzker and Rauner.

I'm Supportive of Rosa and I am a member of the IL DSA. So my disappointment was that Biss wanted Rosa to reneg on his BDS stance. I'm glad Rosa stood firm.

Then I misunderstood you completely, as I feared. My apologies.

(And I'm glad Rosa stood to his guns, too!)
