Geronimo: It is a lie that Afghanistan is our longest war ever. We were at war with Geronimo (Goyaale) and his followers for over 30 years, and with the Apache for even longer. The so-called "Indian Wars" started shortly after the colonists and "settlers" stepped off the boat and lasted until well into the 1900s. So, the US "Indian Wars" ran from 1776 until the 1900s, well over a century. It is traditional to treat each campaign or group of campaigns with each band or group of bands or in each territory as a separate conflict so as to minimize the awareness and cognizance of what this really was, a century long genocidal war of extermination against the Native Americans. That is our longest and ugliest war by a long shot.

Holidays, Holy Days, Festivals, Feast Days and such:

National Macadamia Nut Day (United States)
???? Labor day?? I guess.

-

September 4 is not Labor Day. In the US, the first Monday of September, best known as the official end of summer when the kids go back to school, is "Labor Day", but only in the US. This year, it falls on today. International Workers' Day, which also known as Labour Day in some countries, happens annually on May Day. It is is a celebration of labor, labourers and the working classes and is promoted by the international labour movement, including some (gasp) socialist leaning organizations. In fact, the date was picked by a multinational organization of dirty pinkos to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chitown on May 4, 1886. Naturally, the US could never celebrate such a thing.
-

Were this labor day, I would play a lot of laborite music celebrating labor and unions and all that, but this is the US, so you get Woody and the Ludlow Massacre.

-

So, for music

El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula

-

Orval Faubus

Salvadore Allende

-

Albert Orsborn - Normally, these people get Judy Henske doing "The Salvation Army Song", but given that it is today

Historic Columbia Gorge is burning badly. Cascade Locks under level ll evac. orders and smoke is blotting out the sun all across Portland metro.
Another fire on the other side of Eagle Creek trapped 130 OSU students overnight, but they've made it to safety this morning.
Bad fire season will plague the entire western states this year for sure.
Good luck to you and yours.

Got in-laws in Cascade Locks. Making room for them if need be. They are near Bridge of the Gods but would be cut off if it jumps the Columbia. Which would send them out and around Mt Adams, a good 300 miles.

Because I've been a part of the labor movement all my life. Been in four unions in my entire working career.
Retail Clerks 1965-67 White Front Stores Ca.
Glassblowers 1968-69 Owens-illinois Glass Co.
Machinists. 1969-72 Owens-illinois Glass Co.
Sprinklerfitters 1972-present multiple construction companies. Retired
Do not regret one day, no matter how hard and dirty the work was.
Thanks for the OT, EL. And the opportunity to voice one of my greatest prides, my unwavering belief in unionism.

A year ago, Patricio Estupiñan called the Teamsters, seeking help improving wages, equipment and job safety at the Sonoma County garbage company where he has worked for 25 years.

“We need to get respect. A better life, everything,” Estupiñan said Friday during a short break from driving a street sweeper in Cotati.

It led to a union organizing campaign at the Ratto Group, the county’s dominant trash hauler. In May, Estupiñan and his co-workers — about 400 drivers, mechanics, customer service reps and others — voted to join Teamsters Local 665.

diversity. Peer Gynt ? Memories, listened to it a lot when in highschool doing math homework. (yeah in 1965 I still did my homeworks) I can't stand to well up.

I regret so much to not have learned more and other things. I listened to Edit Piaf a lot too.

Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal; tout ça m'est bien égal !

Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
C'est payé, balayé, oublié
Je me fous du passé !

Avec mes souvenirs
J'ai allumé le feu
Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux !

Balayées les amours
Et tous leurs trémolos
Balayés pour toujours
Je repars à zéro

Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal; tout ça m'est bien égal !

Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Car ma vie, car mes joies
Aujourd'hui, ça commence avec toi

like ..in English

No, nothing at all,
No, I regret nothing
Not the good things they did to me
Nor the bad -- may as well be the same to me!

No, nothing at all,
No, I regret nothing.
It's bought and paid for, wiped away, forgotten,
I don't give a damn about the past!

With my memories
I've lit up the fire
Of my troubles, my pleasures,
I don't need them any more!

Wiped away the romances
And all their instabilities
Swept away for eternity
I restart at zero

No, nothing at all,
No, I regret nothing
Not the good things they did to me
Nor the bad -- may as well be the same to me!

No, nothing at all,
No, I regret nothing
Because my life, because my joys
Today, I begin with you

No, not true. I regret everything.

BTW. "Begeistert" is one of those German words, English speaking folks might wonder about. It means "touched by the spirit or stand by with the spirit (ghost, may be holy ghost - I have no idea - I hope translatorpro from ToP is not lurking - she told me once I shouldn't even try to translate anything ...)

Did you know I am a "Rabenmutter" (I learned this through this article 12 brilliant German words you won't find in English and from my son.... A couple of these brilliant ones are new to me)

So, do you think I am a "Pechvogel" or a "Glückspils"?. I can't figure it out. But I can't be a "Pechvogel", because I don't even have the "Kummerspeck" unlike all those frigging TV cooks who try to convince you that nothing but vegan food will make you a "Glückspils". I could tell you a "Treppenwitz" about that.

ok, I have to go, because I am "verabredet" and this has a meaning, and dare you not to understand it. (in the African understanding being "verabreded" means the opposite ... never be on time that's an insult - sigh)

Oh, man, now I think I have myself totally "quergelegt" with my C99p friends. All about me and nothing about you. So, to me, the only thing that remains to be done is "taking that nap".

He was ninety.
From a piece in the Denver Post, here's a bit of his poem “In a Wonderful Place,” published in the 2009 collection “Planisphere":
____

I spent years exhausting my good works
on the public, all for seconds
Time to shut down colored alphabets
flutter in the fresh breeze of autumn. It
draws like a rout. Or a treat.

Wishing him well as he shakes hands with Frank O'Hara upstairs
