Sky activity

Perseid Meteor Shower
perseids-2024-bishop-california.jpg

The next couple of nights will be the peak times to spot the Perseid display emanating from the passing comet
109P/Swift-Tuttle, an icy ball that orbits the sun every 133 years. Best viewing times will be between midnight and
dawn. It is best to aim your light adjusted eyes toward the constellation Perseus which is high up in the northern sky.
The show will be enhanced due to the phase of the moon being new (absent).

Happy spotting!

@QMS happenings. We have a new moon so no light to cover up what is in the sky. The Milky Way will be one of the best viewings. There is a line up of iirc five or more planets mostly visible by eye or a pair of binoculars. And not least an eclipse of the sun specific areas in totality. Northern Spain is total. France is mostly 80%.

Time and Date is a great website for finding out what's going on in the heavens.

Thanks for highlighting a set of unique starwatch events. We may be messing things up on this planet but the universe spins on.

Thank you.

A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit. Allegedly Greek, but more possibly fairly modern quote.

Yeah, the parade of planets is amazing. Doesn't happen often.
Was not aware of the upcoming eclipse. Guess will not detect it here much?
We seem to have messed up our nest but celestial bodies continue to dazzle
for those with eyes to see. Will check out the Time and Date site.

Hope France is surviving the wild fires.

Not sure if I will catch them this year, definitely will not stay up or set an alarm, but shuld I otherwise wake up between midnight and morning I'll have a peek. High clear skies aren't that common in my area, so the odds are iffy even if I do get up.

According to Dima at the Military Summary Channel there were explosions at facilities in Eastern Russia overnight. If they weren't sabotage then either Ukraine has weapons with ranges of 4,000 and 7,000 KM or else they were launched from somewhere in the Western Pacific. Maybe the Ukies "rented" a missile sub from NATO, but my bets are on sabotage.

Saw at least one mainstream source regurgitating Trump's latest demands without even hinting that the alleged grievances are all lies, sadly typical of todays "news".

Supposed to hit low eithties today, so better get started outside while the sun is still low.

be well and have a good one

funny how that rhymes with LSD

Was not familiar with the concept of "blood diamonds" before. But needing industrial
diamonds to cool next gen processors is outlandish.

May be able to see a few shooters during my middle of the night wakefulness
episode if I pull out a lounge chair. Be a good highlight to the sky diamonds.

Stay cool.

Well I had a photo Ms. So took on her Iphone, but this laptop with afu MS won't upload it. It was a double rainbow that appeared in the east a few evenings back just before sunset. Thank dog for all the digital improvements...

Speaking of sky, this little literary note I came across by a famous Korean general from the seventh century talks of 天文 tianwen which is "astronomy" commonly in the dictionaries, but it could be interpreted the principles of heaven. I just shortened it to heaven's ways. There's a story behind this little Chinese poem below written by a Korean general reputed to have mastered both the literary and military arts.

Eulji Mundeok 乙支文德 a famous Goguryeo general defeated the Sui Dynasty of China, a much greater power who had unified the Chinese Empire and laid a foundation for the later classical Tang Dynasty. The Sui military campaign to a remote region far from home in Goguryeo, taxed the empire's resources, and couldn't possibly be supported with adequate provisions. By the time Mundeok had lured the Sui army deep into Goguryeo (in current north Korea) his superior defensive tactics and use of geography had already exhausted the much larger tired and hungry Sui forces. Mundeok lured the Sui army to within 30 li of Pyongyang and mocked the enemy with a poem after they ran out of provisions.

神策究天文,妙算穷地理,战胜功既高,知足愿云止。

Wondrous strategy attending heaven's ways
Ingenious tactics master geography
Having won every battle attaining great merit
Know your goals fulfilled, give the order to stop.

This story is new to me. I learned of it on a South Korean history documentary, then checked a couple of other sources including Baidu, and wiki. The Sui Dynasty in China collapsed not too long after this disastrous military campaign against the underestimated smaller power.

Thanx for the OT Q! Don't think I'll be able to see anything in the humid, cloudy skies of FL.

collapse. Provisions and arms are running out.
And yet, the trumpet dynasty does not recognize
the folly of their ambitions. I think the generals of
long ago were more sensible than our current crop.

The skies here are looking pretty milky, so may see nothing.
