(**WTF**??): Pelosi: 'Unimportant' to win midterm elections

Pelosi: 'Unimportant' to win midterm elections

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday said it is “unimportant” for Democrats to win the midterm elections in 2018.

During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked Pelosi to estimate the chances that Democrats win back the lower chamber back in 2018 and whether she would run again for speaker if they did.

“That’s so unimportant. What is important is that we have the lively debate on a better deal,” Pelosi said.

*

Wallace during the interview also asked Pelosi if Democrats need newer leaders, noting that the members of her party’s House leadership are all over 75.
“I am a master legislator. I know the budget to the n-th degree. I know the motivation of people,” responded Pelosi, who has faced criticism from some in her party recently.

These cretins would rather the party and the 'Left' stay in the political wilderness forever rather than givie up their losing platfirm and dishonest way of operating. That this old woman, who has the means to comfortably sit out the disasterous wars, economic policies and corruption (like the DNC lies and cheating ) of the Turd Way Dims can go on television spouting that the ONLY thing that is important is sticking with their self-serving pocket-lining agenda should tell this country that they are more interested in keeping their grift going than they care about the people who are forced to pay,
in money and in blood, to keep their boots (or pumps) on our throats. What is wrong with this picture?????

This horridly corrupt Creature has got to go!

I had that something wasn't right at top was when the site got everyone to chip in and send Pelosi dozens and dozens of roses.

I forget what they were thanking her for, but I never had thought much of her as a legislator or as a communicator and I was iffy on whatever they were celebrating. Something didn't feel right.

In retrospect, I can see how much that gesture benefited Kos. Of course, I didn't contribute.

An article in The Guardian about the New Optimists

But first, a book linked in that article published in 2013

The Confidence Trap: A History of Democracy in Crisis from World War I to the Present by David Runciman – review Frustrated with the short-termism and complacency of democratic politics? This is a compelling, highly original guide to how it all works

I have been caught in the Confidence Trap which is the belief that democracy will do a course correction and right the ship of state.

Enter David Runciman, professor of politics at Cambridge, with a lucid, wholly original book that says those fears were, if not wrong, then embarrassingly familiar. The Confidence Trap charts a century of similar moments, when the public intellectuals of the day were seized by the fear that democracy had reached the end of the road. In chapters on 1918, 1933, 1947, 1962, 1974, 1989 and 2008, he reveals a pattern of repeated mood swings, in which complacency about democracy's supremacy and inevitable triumph gives way to despair about its limitations and inability to meet the challenges of the age. In 1933 HG Wells predicted that democracy would soon be discarded as "altogether too slow-witted for the urgent political and economic riddles, with ruin and death at hand". The sentiment is not that far off the report published by the Trilateral commission in 1975, whose eminent authors, anxious that inflation, stagnation and Watergate-era scandal posed an impossible menace, gloomily titled it "The Crisis of Democracy". Those worries echo, in turn, those voiced by Mason and others (including me) in the last two or three years.

For Runciman, that pattern is itself part of a larger phenomenon. Democracies develop confidence in their long-term resilience, based in part on their ability to adapt (in contrast with rigid autocracy). This confidence that all will end well leads democratic states to be complacent, allowing problems to fester, safe in the knowledge that, when it really counts, they'll solve them. Those problems eventually come to a head in the form of a grave crisis. But confronted with such a crisis, democracies usually do adapt just enough to survive. Confidence returns, which eventually turns into complacency and so it begins again. This is the confidence trap. Democracy, says Runciman, can never escape it.

Pelosi was standing on the confidence trap.

That review came from a recent article in The Guardian

Ahhhhh, that's because only the top fraction of the 1% is 'humankind' to these 'thinkers', and killing off everyone else just makes more room, etc., for Those Who Matter And Deserve It All.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Democratic Party, and not only on the federal level. Democrats did not do great in 2012 or 2016 either, in part because the midterms of 2010 coincided with a gerrymandering, er, I mean, re-districting year. They (and Obama) did so well in 2006 and 2008 only because people had so turned against Bushco by 2006 and 2008 was the year Bubba's bank-loving policies caused economic collapse in several nations, including the US. And, of course, while Hillary is the popular vote President, Democrats in general didn't do great in 2016.

If US political history had begun in November 2010, I would say that Pelosi got it exactly wrong: winning Presidential year elections is not important. As it is, I will have to think more before making that claim. But, losing elections in a redistricting year, like 2010 (midterm) or 2020 ain't nothing, Nance. And you've been in politics plenty long enough to know that.

Both Pelosi and wall street Chuckie are the appropriate face of the failed democrap party. Forget them - make them obsolete and just move on past this sad excuse for a political party.

At least from my view, people are spending way too much energy fretting about the dems. I think we would do better using our energy in other ways...educating the people about our senseless wars and how that money could pay for all our pie in the sky medicare for all, free college tuition, solar conversion, high speed electric trains, and so on.

Medea Benjamin is so correct...

You would think it would be easy to form a united front with activists from different movements who want to redirect our tax dollars. Students fighting for free education should understand that stopping just one weapons system, the expensive and unnecessary Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, would fund the education of all college students for the next two decades. Nurses fighting for universal health care should understand that if we cut the bloated military budget, we’d have plenty of money for a national health-care system like the Europeans have. Environmentalists paddling their kayaks to block oil-digging ships should understand that if we dramatically cut our military spending, we’d have hundreds of billions of dollars to propel us into the era of green, sustainable energy. Unions should recognize that the military is one of the worst creators of jobs in relation to money spent.

Think the dems will talk this way? I don't. Leave them in their pile of contributions. We have to drive this conversation.

@Lookout

I agree with forget democrats, that's a dead end. In my opinion they are essentially a Ponzi scheme. Pelosi openly admits they don't even care about winning or changing anything.

I'm also in agreement about focusing on the bloated military budget as the best response to the inevitable question who is going to pay for all this free stuff? when you talk about universal healthcare, etc. with people. Instead of explaining or saying raise taxes, I say "do you know how many military bases this country has around the world, and how much that's costing us every day? I'd rather have our tax dollars spent taking care of people here!" This at least plants the idea-- there is already enough money in the government to pay for it. And point to where the real "fraud, waste, and abuse" is happening, the military and defense industry. Generally it works pretty well to stop the objections to progressive ideas, for a minute.

Ok so the question: then what? What's the end game?

Let's say somehow this message starts to pick up steam and more people start thinking, that's true. The military is too bloated, and we should have more socialism, and less warmongering, so people here can have a higher standard of living.

Are the political parties/CEOs who run the government and MIC going to then stand down and give up their imperialism and endless war? I can't see it. I don't see how it matters when they don't care what anyone thinks about their priorities and profits. They just invoke the magic spell "national security" and neutralize any opposition.

So what's the plan? Are the people going to vote them out, and elect new congress and president who can and will somehow force the MIC to change? See, that's the part I can't see happening.

I think maybe people chose to focus their efforts on specific, small-improvement issues because deep down they know or feel it's all we can do. Because the monster itself is too big to slay or contain, and will steamroll right over anyone who tries to make them change.

Maybe leaving is not enough. Maybe processing and/or purging is necessary.

In addition, though, a large percentage of voters still vote Democratic, even if they consider Democrats the only slightly lesser of two evils. (I consider them a greater evil than Republicans, but that is another story.) It's only a relatively small percentage of voters who refuses to vote for one or the other of the two largest parties. I don't have to try to dissuade the left from voting Republican, but at least some of them have to be dissuaded from voting Democratic. Not that I think posting will do that. Which brings me to my next point.

Since those of us who refuse to vote Democratic or Republican don't have a media voice, where are we driving the conversation?

I am seriously interested in how do you think all this talk is going to accomplish anything if we don't have a way to elect the right people to see that a real progressive agenda come to pass? How do you think that we can change anything unless we get real progressives in office (local, state, federal)? No one sitting here can propose legislation. We need to put in the places that these changes can be made.

Easy - the Dems continue pragmatically losing elections and the 'landslide?' not even run against and anyway selected-to-win-by-Homeland-Security Republicans get the numbers to rewrite the US Constitution to corporate/billionaire dictation, and then The Psychopaths That Be can claim that whatever they do is 'legal' and 'Constitutional' to keep the basically law-abiding people from taking them down. The promised Dem pay-offs for this must be enormous, although of course there's no need to actually pay off those no longer required...

What need then to have corporate/billionaire management split into two 'political parties', when the various factions of 'really do have it all now' war-lords can directly do as they please? Including to each other. not that anything will long survive the beginning of that lucrative (and eagerly pursued by some) nuke exchange anyway.
