July 10, 2017 Open Thread; Nikola Tesla Day
July 10 is the 191th day of the year. There are 174 days left.
Today's number is 10
10 is the base of the decimal number system. Since many others such as 12 make more sense, we must assume that it is because humans have 10 manual digits.
10 years is a decade, well, 10 anything, sort of, though "decad" also means a set or group of ten
To reduce something by 10 is to decimate.
10 is the sum of the first 4 integers
That might be why bowling is also known as ten pins
10 is the sum of the first 3 primes (2,3,& 5)
A polygon with 10 sides is a decagon
A crustacean with 10 legs is a decapod
A person with 10 or more vices is decadent (needs a citation)
10 is neon
10 is also Capricorn which is also a sea goat
A specific selection of 10 track & field events is a decathalon
10 yards is a first down in US football
The end zones in US football are 10 yards deep
The Rim of the hoop in roundball is 10 feet high
The highest score possible is often 10
Bo Derek may or may not have been a perfect 10.
10 High is a barely potable, but inexpensive, whiskey
The "10-Code", good buddy, is numerical shorthand used by cops, emergency responders, truckers and CW artists
Tennis has nothing to do with the numeral 10.
10 factorial is 3,628,800, the number of seconds in 6 weeks
10 Years after is both a book and a band
10 cents (US) is a "dime", as in

Happy Tesla Day!
Enclosed is an image a building mural from my former town of ST. Petersburg, Fl.
The reflection is perfect and shows the street and behind the traffic light is a view of the baseball stadium.

"Another Juan Brown Adventure" I watched this vid with sound off at 1.5 speed, quite enjoyed it. All the "stuff" kind of gives me the creeps now, but did enjoy riding along with Juan and seeing the back roads and views.

Greetings Bisbonian,
Long time no see. Looks like Wednesday is the 100th anniversary of the Bisbee Deportation.
Are you going to be in town for the commemoration ?

"Clairvoyant"
Had to look the word up after my provider used it on me the other day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairvoyance
Sorry, nope I reject clairvoyance because it says "pseudoscience" and that always makes me really uncomfortable. I don't like unexplained stuff, but all my life I have sometimes felt these "strong feelings" about "places or things", I mean really strong to the point it changes my future actions.
The other day I guess I was coming down with something but I had also been battling this strange fear of being around cars for a couple days before, it was keeping me off going for a walk outside. Then Friday morning a car crash happened one block from here. A parked car got rear ended, the driver who hit it did not even brake so it was pretty pretty loud. Scared the heck out of me. Turned out no one seriously injured, good. I thought maybe my weird car energy would dissipate.
Then a little later, feeling even worse I called my provider for new meds and he told me his car was totaled so couldn't deliver that day, maybe Saturday if he could get a rental. I was like "wow", he was unhurt thanks goodness. I ended up getting really sick by the afternoon, I think that was the hottest day of the year too. I remember asking for good thoughts here before I logged out to lie down.
Then, for me the miracle happened just when I was feeling like... I don't know who would I call when I'm 911? Our private ambulance service? Nope, I didn't sign up because who can afford the hospital bills? Not me. Anyway my provider called back and he did deliver that evening so within hours I was recovering, able to drink and eat a little bit. I told him to be careful on the road and we agreed a sage smudge might be in order, for "cleansing" the car stuff. lol
Also on Friday this happened right down the street: Southern California man jailed after Highway 101 pursuit, standoff
And now he's in jail of course, I hope he doesn't kill himself. I think? Surprised the cops didn't shoot him, I guess he wasn't brown or black. This is kinda how I imagined a general breakdown of society would look from a couple decades ago, I should stop thinking such things.
...
Our garbage truck drivers voted to become Teamsters, good for them. Meanwhile our garbage sat rotting in the street all day Friday (hottest day) and half of Saturday because I don't know why. It is the second week they are one day late, maybe they changed the schedule and told no one. Again. I kept getting notices about what they no longer accept for recycling, shredded paper wtf. It can't go in compost either, has to go in the trash. For that pleasure the rates are going up again, just a little (wink wink).
I worked backward from Melvil Dewey to get here this morning, a guy who always falls out the lint trap on number ten day. List of Dewey Decimal classes > Natale Battezzati > Positivism example coincidence. Oops back to pseudoscience with that one. ~shrug~

Another summer, another garbage pile
eXperience Cloverdale. Free camping, no water or restrooms, no downstream, etc.. No Public Facilities.

Monte Rio Beach on Russian River to remain closed due to bacteria levels
Monte Rio is downstream and they have their own problems (most homeless evah). "Unrelated". lol, I have to laugh, laughter is medicine. The Bohemian Club now announces their summer entertainment right in town. Next I guess there'll be little self-infernos dedicated to the The Cremation of Care. I spent many years growing up on the Russian River south of Monte Rio, my dad's dad was a Bohemian Club member in the late 30's. The family vacation house was called Sans Souci its sign is still there last time I drove by, about a year ago.
Pray for the Russian River, think healing thoughts, that's what I do. Water is life.

Oh yah, Claire Voyant, I knew her.

Ummm, excuse me but ...
Patriotic Americans are now calling it the Freedom River, or are your Kremlin bosses telling you otherwise ?

Uh, that part of CA was under Russian control
long before the US conquered CA.
Fort Ross was built in 1812 on land legally purchased by Russia from the local Native Americans for “three blankets, three pairs of breeches, two axes, three hoes, and some beads.” The Spanish had pre-emptively countered in 1776 with the San Francisco Presidio, to discourage further southward expansion of the Russian west coast fur traders.
This didn't stop SF from winding up with a Russian Hill.
Pieroshki, pelmeni, tamales and enchiladas are all California favorites. Yankee pot roast not so much.

The entire mission chain,
so well known to California fourth-graders, was originally planned to counter Russian expansion. The Spanish Crown had claimed most of the western hemisphere, but possession being 9/10 of the law, they decided they needed an actual presence there.
How different might our country have been if the Russians, rather than the Spanish, had colonized California ? We can only speculate but Russian treatment of native Americans was no more enlightened that of the Spanish.

Well, for starts, there's the food, the music, and the
culture. The Tsar did make a claim, but I note that we have WA and OR regardless, as well as Seward's Folly, so the US probably would've wound up owning the place anyway, just without fiestas and vodka instead of cerveza.

Thank you, nobody has hacked California history
Screen shot or it didn't happen, that's about where we are now trying to preserve what really happened over the course of 2016 primary. Stolen Democracy indeed.
Thanks for the history.
Clairvoyance...
I can't say how valid this hypothesis is or how you'd even go about testing it. I do feel this is a better explanation than the FM Principle--"I don't know so it must be Friggin' Magic".
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.

"Could be a spoonful of sugar, laced with LSD,"
sang Robert Plant at a Band of Joy gig in Wolverhampton prior to joining Led Zeppelin, according to a Birmingham writer.
The club's owner was a woman who was married to a police sergeant, who "threw them all out of the pub."
Planty was a bit of a rebel and also a walking music compendium, who got heavy into the West Coast psychedelia scene.
Just picked up from the library this really enjoyable "oral history" book by Barney Hoskyns, who collected an incredible breadth of firsthand voices about their career and history beginning with when they were kids.

Um,
decimate is not to remove ten from something. It's to reduce something by 10%. When a Roman legion performed poorly the men were required to count off by 10s. A number was called out. All those having that number were forced to step out and were executed. It gave the remainder an incentive in future battles.
great selections!
I'd give it a 10
