We're putting out the welcome mat for all you new folks!

Welcome to C99! It's great to see you!

welcome matOver the past couple of days, a deluge of people suddenly signed up for the site, over 100 of them in a 2 hour period.

We had no idea you all were going to drop in all at once and it caught our server by surprise. We've upgraded to a new server with more bandwidth and so far everything looks good.

The person to thank for this quick migration of the site is Johnny the Conqueroo (JtC). He is the one-man tech department that brought this site into existence and has very ably made it work for everybody. Please give him a round of applause.

This site is a labor of love, not a profit-making venture (note the lack of advertisements) it is funded by the contributions of folks who hang out here. At the point when we need money to pay for more bandwidth or if we need to make other additions or alterations to the site to accommodate more users, JtC will post a donation button.

Since so many of you seem to be coming here from that Orange place, we thought that maybe a word or two about the site to help orient you guys might be a good idea. There's an FAQ that presents the basics of how to navigate the site and do some basic things, most of which will be pretty intuitive and simple for folks coming from the GOS.

There are some significant differences between this site and the Great Orange Satan.

This is not a partisan site. This site does not endorse any candidate or ask that anyone support a candidate or party.

Like the Occupy movement from which the name of this site derives (many of the early members of the site were active members and supporters of Occupy) we are open to people with all kinds of different ideas about how to make the world a better place. The folks already here represent a broad range of left-leaning to far-left orientations. While community standards here are against things like various "isms" that can make the world an ugly place (racism, sexism, etc.) the community is open to a wide range of ideas on how to make the world a better, peaceful and sustainable place.

This is a site for grown-up people to discuss politics, social organization, culture and related topics as we build a community.

Grown-ups do not feel so threatened by a diversity of opinion that they feel the need to attack people who think differently or mobilize socially manipulative actions to harrass, isolate and exile people with whom they disagree.

So, for those of you coming from the GOS, yes you can say, for example, that you will vote for Jill Stein or Vermin Supreme rather than Mrs. Goldwater-Sachs if the Democratic Party apparatus manages to shove Bernie Sanders out of the way. There are even greater possibilities of the sorts of things that folks might want to discuss here that are foreclosed by the partisan orientation of other sites.

There are no HR's here, no roving gangs of self-appointed censors (we do have moderators who are committed to keeping a free and open dialogue on the site), there is no mojo, nor are their badges of distinction. Nobody keeps track of how many "likes" people get on their posts and liking a post itself is anonymous, so there is no reason to "like" a post except to show that somebody likes the ideas expressed in it (as opposed to the individual posting it).

There is no way to "win the site," except by having good ideas, expressing them well and being kind to other people, which curries their respect.

The coin of the realm here is kindness and articulate discussion of your point of view which respects other people's ideas. Discussions that are characterized by the coherent exposition of evidence, facts, logic and reason which honor the bonds of friendship that hold us together are what this community thrives on.

So, welcome, we hope that you thrive in the less constrained, friendlier atmosphere here.

I was thinking of starting a Progressive Site up myself...
But I was also thinking of rapid growth, increasing server loads, crashes, and migrations...
Glad you are doing it for me...

Thanks so much for this. I am currently reading about the site. Will there be groups or specific topics that a person could write and blog about? I am considering doing some writing on higher education costs, and colleges in Europe and other places as well. I feel that it is one way that I could use my knowledge base for the good of the community.

welcome!

currently there are no sub groups or topic pages, we haven't really needed them to this point. we really have only two divisions of the site at this point, the community comment page which currently carries all of our posts, open threads and community announcements and the front page which carries only our posted articles (it's our front door, so to speak, where we post the articles we think that visitors should read).

with all of the new users we may have to create some more pages or make some other device to make the site content accessible to folks. it really depends on how much content gets created and how neatly it falls into a category that we could sensibly cluster onto a page.

if we get to a point where there is so much content that it is scrolling far down the page before folks get a chance to have it under their noses, we'll obviously have to figure something out.

please do put together the posts that you are considering, it would certainly be quite welcome here and i think that you would find that folks are eager to discuss higher education, its costs and the means to make it available broadly in a manner that does not place a mortgage on people before they even enter the workforce.

Robyn and JayRaye both publish a topic specific series based on when and how they chose to do it. Joe publishes EB every weekday. We have a morning open thread every day. People can volunteer for a slot on the open thread schedule. They do with their open thread how much or how little they want. Everybody else posts or doesn't post diaries essays as the mood strikes them.

If you noticed the top two links on the left indicate we have a front page and a community content. Diaries that are insightful, thoughtful, please excuse my fumbling for considerate language, are also posted to the front page. When c99 is googled, it is the front page that surfaces. The community content page is casual, irreverent, loved, and not necessarily what you want strangers to land on.

You might want to chat with JayRaye or Robyn and then decide how and if you want to proceed. If you click on their name, it will take you to a page where you can send them a direct email. Everyone is welcome and everyone is encouraged to participate in their own way.

there is something to be said for a smaller pond where people's focus is more aligned in terms of getting attention for your work.

i'm thinking that without the pie fights and the struggle over "winning the site," people will have more time and be able to have more interesting and productive interactions that might (gasp) lead to organizing and activism. Smile

Nowadays all you have to do to get attention at the site that must not be mentioned is to say something bad about Clinton or good about any other candidate.

fine, but the site is a large audience of at least moderately engaged people. There are many messages and a lot of content that can be presented and advocated there. I know I will be staying for some of the Enviro stuff, the Daily Bucket and such, but I also keep hoping to get Group W more fully operational as an anti-war venue, because I'm sure we'll need all of them we can fabricate to re-kindle some sort of peace movement in today's USA.

Good to be here, joe.

In the song “Hoochie Coochie Man,” Muddy Waters sings about having a Johnny the Conqueroo. This term shows up in lots of blues songs. What or who is it?

John the Conqueror, which is also known as High John the Conqueror or John de Conquer, was a folk hero in African-American folklore. Most probably John was entirely fictional or at the very least extremely embellished. He was mostly likely a fictional avenue for the African slaves to defeat their masters without having open rebellion. It is said that he was the son of an African king, who although he was sold as a slave in America, they could not tame him...

John is a mythical being and is not dead. He went back to Africa, but he left his power here in the root of a certain plant. The plant is known in some areas as bindweed or jalap root and is related to the morning glory and the sweet potato. If you possess the root of that plant he can be called at any time. He is available when he is needed. Thus that root became a good luck charm, although they say John is so powerful that just uttering the words “John the Conqueror” is enough to protect against being hoodooed. John the Conqueror is also known as High John the Conqueror or John de Conquer but regardless of which name is used, in these contexts “conqueror” is pronounced “conker” or sometimes “conqueroo”. to JtC. I first heard of the plan for this site when a kind Kos poster (3 goldens) emailed me that a group was going to start up, and that it was chugging along as a Google Group, pretty big and unwieldy, but organizing a new website. I opted to wait for the website since my rural DSL is not too fast. SouthernLiberal in MD Kosmailed me to let me know it was going live in Feb. 15. Joined soon after and had a tech issue (my incompetence is not limited to any one website Wink )and busy as he was, JtC walked me through resolving it. in German, son of an African king and a Wagner lover (unbelievable !!!) with some interesting thingies in his mojo bag.

Sigh, I utter now conqueroo at least three times a day, once after I have read the morning OT, for protection of getting hoodooed by 'those' commentators, second time after I peaked into the orange pit, to get protected from being angry to have left, because those hoodooing spirits over there deserve to be fought, and once in the evening, before I start to read the Evening Blues for protection against having the blues and being all depressed. Heh, I have my little JuJu charme against that too ... you know we have African queens, who can handle those maladies.
