The Veneer of Social Progressivism

Upon the wretched diseased beams that is the Democratic party lies a thin slice of social issues. These of course will crumble upon any major political weight placed upon them but that's not really why they are there.

The beautiful little veneer exists only to be used as a weapon against those who would dare criticize the structural and philosophical problems with the party. It is a tool for silencing the opposition with the cries of the "oppressed".

Nowhere is this more evident than in the innocent sounding, but incredibly insulting call to "Check Your Privilege". On the surface, this may seem to be a perfectly reasonable request, but dig just a little bit deeper, and the insult becomes clear. It is a statement that your years of experience, your belief in justice, and your wishes for a better future are all invalid because your skin color renders you incapable of understanding. It is deeply insulting, and carries with it the false bravado of a college student who has been given an A by a professor for successfully "sticking it to the man, man".

I invite any of these fools telling me to check my privilege to share the hardships that I have with people who do not share my skin tone. I invite them to live in fear with those they are defending. I invite them to share meals, watches, and duty. I suggest that before they call upon me to check my privilege they take the time to feel true loss as a man they might admire with a different skin tone falls to the ground in front of them from an unknown ailment, inflicted by the wounds of war. In short, I would tell those who truly think they can demand I shut up based off of the amount of melanin in my system to check their own goddamn privilege before they start looking for motes in mine.

This is NOT social justice in any sense of the word. What this is, is the playing of victim poker. How many different classifications of VICTIM can you make? If your cards add up to more than the opposing side, the opposing side MUST shut up! Score one for Team Progressive!

While we sit around talking about institutional racism and how Oprah Winfrey is clearly more oppressed than you based off the SPF of your suntan lotion, the system continues to kill. Afraid of going outside because you don't trust the police? Well, doesn't matter, because somebody who's black might fear it more! Don't do a goddamn thing about actually FIXING the problem, just demand that everybody agree that certain people have it worse. This is the rhetorical equivalent of demanding a kiss upon your signet ring. Who benefits from this? Certainly not the young black youth on the street. Certainly not the young poor white living there either. The only person who benefits is the "beautiful mind" who no longer has to waste time on your argument.

Want a less racially charged example? I shall be happy to oblige.

Gay. Just start with that word. I'm not gay, so I can't actually say anything about it. Oh, wait, I am Bi. Which is a big part of LGBTQ, but apparently it does not count because of my straight privilege. Yes, that's right, since half of my identity (arbitrarily decided, since Bi is not a binary, but a spectrum, but whatever) falls in line with the tradition, I cannot truly understand, and therefore must once again, you guessed it, SHUT UP. Once codified into a voting block, thou shalt fall in line or be privileged. What about my Transgender allies? Do we not see the oppression that they suffer on a... "SHUT UP! We're all about Kim Davis now! Vote for us or you shall lose what you already have!" Again, the veneer of progressivism rises, used as a weapon against those that have legitimate points. Care about the fact that the murder rate for Transgender Persons is through the roof? Because the party sure as shit doesn't. Unless of course it's linked to a SECOND statistic which can also be used as a bludgeon against those agitating for change.

We have gotten to the point where those who claim the mantle of Social Justice have allied themselves with the censors, again. A sad legacy of the alliance between the Religious Right and the Radical Feminists in the 80's again raises its head. Once responsibility is abdicated to nebulous forces which MADE you a victim, all efforts to defeat that seems to be fair, and yet it always seems to reinforce the old ways, and the old party power. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, but with a hyphen in their self-identification matrix.

I don't honestly give a shit what color the boot stepping on our necks is. I don't care if it has a heel, is stiletto, or is locally sourced organic. It's still a boot, and it's still on our necks. If we aren't going to be addressing that fact, any other fucking discussion is a bit beside the point.

Disagree? What disagree? You've written a wonderful rant against the whole nitroglycerin-filled eggshell array that is dkos today! In kos-speak, "privilege" means "I get to decide and you don't."

Fuck that shit all to hell, along with the politically correct packaging it comes in!

Again, amice, un primo rant and truth-telling to be proud of!

But seriously, glad you liked it. Kos is a cautionary tale for where sites can go if we let the tyranny of the despots prevail.

It's a fine line between DK and any other place. The two party political system divides people more than just two ways.

I mean, demanded it, but I can't do it in all honesty, given that I'm over here because of a stupid suspension of my TU status due to someone taking offense at the privilege of a poster whose comment I rec'd (supposedly, I've never seen the evidence, and by this time I really don't care anymore) who used the term "corporate whore" (again, so I'm told by the poobahs at the help desk) to describe HRC, a term that is AOK if applied with impunity to any amorphous male Dem or all male Dems of the elected official persuaseon.

Now that's privilege.

“Business activity stagnated in February as malaise spread from the manufacturing sector to services. The Markit PMIs are signalling a stagnation of the economy in February, suggesting growth has deteriorated further since late last year.

“Prices pressures are waning again in line with faltering demand. Average prices charged for goods and services are dropping once again, down for the first time in five months, as firms compete to win new business

Worse may be to come, as inflows of new business have slowed sharply, causing backlogs of work across both sectors to fall at the fastest rate seen since the 2008-9 financial crisis. Such weak demand suggests that business activity and price discounting look set to continue.

and do not disagree, just the BRUTAL part of our supposed disagreement I oppose. Enough brutality all around, no need to stoke those fires.

The problem with the competition of the various victim status of different groups of people is that that anyone has his own personal life and with it the experience to feel its own victim hood. That is usually so all consuming in the way it uses up your emotional mental health, that to look over to the next group's victimization is pretty hard, people try to be fair and do it, but in the end it's your own experience of what kind of victimization is the most burning one to you. So, only those people, who have not experienced something that made them feel their own "victimhood", can talk about it "smartly" and "fairly" or "with controlled emotions and empathy" about it. And those others, who feel or felt the pain personally, get angry, because those others are so "darn sophisticated verbal" about something that tears themselves apart.

I don't honestly give a shit what color the boot stepping on our necks is. I don't care if it has a heel, is stiletto, or is locally sourced organic. It's still a boot, and it's still on our necks. Right, the boots that step on our emotions, I might say, are the ones, you find online. Funny how you talk about the locally sourced organic "boots". Not many people recognize those easily, but they are there too.

I try to learn to take the "check your privlege, check your unconscious racism" requests with calm and watch out it doesn't get me down and depressed. I still need to work on the step to just say like

And the Brutal reference is of course to the 1967 movie "The Producers" where Roger is asking for critique of his costume of the "Grand Duchess Anastasia"... (Just trying to show that I really don't take myself very seriously)

I must say that I disagree on the "Check your privilege" demands, because it often is used as a weapon. I guess I just find the assumptions present in it to be insulting. It's a way to end an argument without resorting to anything but a shaming attempt.

Another place this microveneer of social progressivism rears its ugly head is in the candidacies (and governance, if they get elected) of pseudo-progressives like Hillary Clinton.

We are told to STFU and vote for her because of all the nice things she did for the LGBTQ people, the things she advocates for, etc.

These things will be dropped like a hot potato the second her Wall Street owners demand it. Pfffft-gone! Just like her "opposition" to TPP.

Yet the Privilege Police still insist we have no right to dare to point this out, because they know better than we can, because of our "privilege".

Again, I say: fuck them and fuck that!

Went to the Diary at www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/3/3/1495458/--Insert-Curse-Word-Here. Talk about your Hillarite whinefest on steroids! With a plentiful helping of "privilege" invocation (English translation: I get to decide for you) as sauce!

How dare we question Her Royale Inevitability! The very nerve!

Ahem.

Now that I'm back here, I can tell you I lasted less than 2 minutes in that Diary. gjohnsit got severely bashed for daring to cross-post his That awful moment when you realize George Carlin was right Diary to DK. That was the point at which I bailed. I have yet to eat my supper, and I'm not that desperate for a svelte, slim body! Bad

Of course, we do dare question that. At least, we do it here. Looks like my prediction will have come to pass; there will be more of the actual "Kossack" left here than there. Those who know the ropes here should prepare themselves to help out with community support. We will be needed!

n.b.: The term "jesuschrist superfoo" is both an emphatic superlative and a reference to the opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

comment elsewhere on this topic about how they sound on this. It's the whole course of identity politics run amok.

BTW, I'm excluding our own Robyn from this. In fact, she is exactly the kind of example I would use to counter the "Check Your Privilege" b.s. as Robyn writes about what real oppression looks like, and what real courageous struggle is about.

(And I urge everyone here on this site to make the effort to at least rec her diaries when they appear here. She's given us both the heartbreak and inspirational triumph of being trans in a transphobic world.)

And the sad thing is that Kos and his ilk will only acknowledge Trans presence when it can be used as a weapon against a specific Republican.

Mostly in the "Outrageous! How dare They! *Pearl Clutch* manner.

As far as actually doing a damn thing, It falls more under the category of "What's the number of votes I'll win vs votes I'll alienate by doing the right thing?"

I took the time to read dopper's diary that sat on the rec list for a while. The thrust was an analysis of why Bernie had failed to garner more AA votes, so far at least.

The diary was enlightening and fairly free of the kind of the "privilege" talk that's been used there so often during the last 8 years or so.

A good part of it was making the case that many AAs, especially voting AAs, didn't care much about Bernie's issues like minimum wage, free college, Medicare-for-all, etc., and that the white progressives were assuming that all AAs were poor when, in fact, many were quite affluent.

Fair enough, and that had been my read of many of the AA posters on DK for some time. They're mostly professionals or successful business people. Many are well-connected politically.

What struck me, though, was the complete lack of any mention of the concept of solidarity with dopper's AA poor sisters and brothers. Again, fair enough. Whites like Blankfein and Dimon sure don't have much feeling of solidarity with their poor fellow whites. We would feel quite free, however, to castigate those bankers for their attitude of "I've got mine."

"Privilege" talk provides nice cover for affluent members of generally oppressed groups to fend off calls for solidarity among the 99% that cut across the little distinctions in rank and comfort among workers that are created by Capitalists to divide us. Many of the primary users of "privilege" on DK are really economic conservatives who are fine with the status quo and identify with the plutocrats who are oppressing their poor black brethren.

Is just SO DailyKos it just drips of orange sarcasm. Then again the Democratic establishment doesn't mind serving the One Percent, provided that One Percent is 51% female, 20% black, and so forth. And looking back to the 2010 Bush tax cut cave-in, how many snide and patronizing comments said "You don't care about the unemployed!" showed up when anyone dared to oppose that so called deal?
